The Unusual Pet Vets reviews
62 I took my rabbit into The Unusual Pet Vet in Balcatta for treatment recently. (7 Year old French Mini Lop - male called Bogart)
My rabbit was sneezing. The problem was diagnosed after X Rays as a shift in teeth that was causing inflammation on the root triggering sneezing attacks. Teeth problems are very common in rabbits as we all know. The consultation advice after the X Rays was not to remove any teeth as this can cause shifting on other teeth. I understand this. I however expressed an opinion that removal of the tooth might be a viable solution regardless, but a tri weekly 6 week course of injectable Duplocillin was the outcome. I left with trepidations and was not entirely happy. Now I and have been a rabbit owner for 20 years and have years of experience in injecting rabbits, including training from my mum who is a vet nurse so I am not unfamiliar with the process. 3 weeks into the course my rabbit had stopped sneezing. The back of his neck had developed lumps which is a sign of low absorption, however it was still possible to inject around these areas. Monday night Bogart received his first of two 0.7 in a 1ml syringe injection. This took fine, however on the second injection after withdrawing he went into immediate seizure with loss of motor function, head tilt, screaming in pain, he was dead 45 minutes later. Procane is the carrying agent in Duplocillin and if it gets into the bloodstream can cause this reaction in rabbits. To say the least I am extremely distressed and annoyed with this outcome. I would have preferred to have the tooth removed as I showed a preference for in the consult. This may have caused issues with the teeth further down the track but my rabbit would still be alive. My preference as a customer was not really listened to. An analogy of this is that if you go to a shoe shop to purchase that pair of runners that you really like but the sales person tries to sell you another pair, but you decline and state that, no, you only want that pair of shoes, then you would be sold that pair of shoes that you want. Doctors and vets in this country seem to have a holier then holy attitude in only doing what they think should be done without taking the opinion of the customer on board. After all they are only providing a service that YOU pay for. So if you want the tooth removed, then that tooth should be removed and you should have the final say.
Bottom line. I took my rabbit to The Unusual Pet Vets with a sneezing problem and three weeks later had a dead rabbit, If the tooth had been removed my rabbit would still be alive. Take the advice of any vet on board but do not let them make the final judgement call, YOU DECIDE.
I will not recommend this vet for rabbit care, in fact I would be very cautious in using them at all. They need to change their approach in dealing with PAYING customers. Be very careful in future.
We are the proud parents of a little Netherland Dwarf rabbit and couldn't be more pleased to have found The Unusual Pet Vets.
Consideration is given to smaller pets not being around the larger more predatory type of animals and they took wonderful care of our little George. Highly recommend if you have an unusual member of the family (don't think they accept husbands though)
I brought my mouse here and was seen by Dr Katrina Wood. She gave an outstanding appointment, very knowledgeable considering my poor Azizi could've had 2 outcomes. Katrina was very sweet, caring and gentle towards my Azizi. We always bring our mice here if any issues as the team are always amazing, understanding and knowledgeable and they care about all animals, big and small. Thank you team at The Unusual Pet Vet and thank you Dr Katrina for our lovely last visit ️
I didn't know what to expect tbh.id never taken a canary with a broken leg to the vet before.
I unfortunately came away without my feathered friend. He couldn't be saved.
I did come away though, with a heart full of gratitude and an appreciation for the compassion and kindness and the genuine care I was shown.
Thankyou Dr Lam. I can see why veterinary science was your calling.and rightly so.
Very friendly, efficient, and sincere staff. Not the cheapest, but you come here for the service and peace of mind
Last week our beloved budgie Sunny, was taken to the Unusual Pets Vet with respiratory issues. Unfortunately, the best option for our little buddy was euthanasia. The bird specialist vet was extremely compassionate. He spoke to myself and my three crying children gently and reassured us that the process would be painless and quick. He allowed us the time to say our goodbyes and after the procedure was complete Sunny was wrapped in a little white slip with a beautiful yellow ribbon wrapped around it (the same colour as our budgie). Today in the mail we received a bereavement card from the vets with some seeds to plant in our garden in memory of Sunny. It was a lovely touch and reiterated their professionalism with this kind gesture. I would just like to express my gratitude to them for their compassion towards us at this time. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
We are so happy to have now found our bird Buddy a fantastic vet service. The service we received from Dr Kelly and her team from start to finish was so welcoming and friendly.
Friendly and professional. Highly trained to deal with the usual pets and also as the name suggests, Unusyal pets like Mice, rats, Guineapigs, all birds and lizards.
I just want to say the support, information and overall service I received was amazing. Very knowledgeable and took great care of my lorikeet Skittles and ensuring she was comfortable. Recieved regular updates and clear information.
I've always had good experiences here. The vets are very knowledgeable which is rare when you have rats!
Very kind and compassionate when we were having a hard day.
Amazing, way better for birds than average vets. Answered all the questions I had and gave my birds great care.
If you have a rabbit, Guinea pig, bird or reptile this is the vet you want. Situated in Balcatta veterinary hospital the vets specialise in exotic animals. Very friendly and easy to talk too. Vet nurses are great too.
Fantastic vet service, great knowledge and bedside manner. For my dog and most recently my rabbits:) so very happy:) as it’s stressful for the bunz, while she prepared the bill, the bunz got a little free roam time, this really helped with relaxing them:) and it was cute:)
Thank you very much:)
I took my precious rat here when I found she was in the early stages of a respiratory infection. The staff were so lovely and smiley and made me feel comfortable. I didn't have to wait very long and the vet that took care of us was very informative. She even emailed me some rat care sheets as a I am a newbie! It was also alot cheaper than I anticipated. Overall they seem like a really caring team who take pride in their work! Definitely go her for all your pets but especially your unusual ones!
Best animal mechanic I've ever taken my fur babies to.
Genuinely caring and compassionate.
My bunnies were calm and received the best most thorough treatment and care.
Your pets will be in the best hands here
Expert advice and attention to detail. Follow-up information packages are so useful. But above all, very warm, compassionate and caring staff. Thank you so much for looking at our guinea pigs!
If you have a Bird, Lizard, Rat, Rabbit or any other oddball pet these guys will take take of them. Friendly and professional vets always happy to dumb down the complicated words for us plebs.
This vet is very good for looking after less common pets, our rabbits are well looked after by them
Take both dog and rabbit there, great service and friendly staff. Extra plus for their great "unusual pet" veterinarians!
A really good vet for your exotic/unusual pets. I take my rats here regularly and they are always treated with great care and enthusiasm. The vets seem very knowledgeable and have helped my rats through a few illnesses now. (Also, group appointments for all of my rats at once is a lot cheaper than taking them individually and I appreciate that!)
