The European reviews
85Traditional layout and can get very crowded. Serving staff was professional, helpful and patience with my 2 young kids. Menu options somewhat limited but good food. Steak medium was a bit cold when arrived.
The food here was alright, though for what we got I did feel it was a bit pricey. I was going to rate this slightly lower, but one of the servers was quite friendly with me and my colleagues at one point and I thought that effort was nice.
Excellent meals, served by usually effecient and friendly staff. It's very popular and quite busy, recommend booking. The wine and beer list is quite extensive also. A good dining experience.
Another magnificent might of fine food and great wine. This establishment remains a benchmark for great food in Melbourne. Food choice is exciting and the waiters are knowledgeable, engaging and polite. A pleasure to dine here in comfortable surrounds with knowledgeable staff. A great night.
Sensational coffee. Fantastic wait staff (best in Melb? !)
Could benefit from larger serves of coffee however and presentation was a bit underwhelming for the price.
This is how eggs on sourdough toast ($16) was served.
Always looks great but just a little disappointing. Expensive for Melbourne without being anything special. Yes I know it is a Melbourne institution.
This is my favourite choice for a weekday breakfast - great service, flawless coffee by Adriana and super scrambled eggs in classic timeless venue.too good. And the service from Roland is FIRST class.
Had one of better seafood marinaras at The European. The atmosphere was a great place to catch up with friends.
Highly recommend a long weekday lunch at this place. The duck breast was remarkable and the wine list extensive.
Disappointing. Went for a weekend lunch only to be informed that because it was the weekend they only served the brunch menu. Ok if I wanted eggs on toast.but I didn't. The 'lunch' options were very limited and nothing to get excited about. Overpriced and just the same as what I could have had at the pub two doors down for half the price.
Customer service was poor. Left feeling like we were inferior as the servers were quite arrogant and treated us like we were out of place. A shame because the food was actually quite good.
My favourite place to eat and meet in the city (Melbourne). The food has never disappointed, the service is always awesome. Keep up the good work.
Nice and cozy atmosphere.booking essential to avoid disappointment. Great spot for pre-show dinners. Always find the wait staff very efficient and friendly. Good wine list and specials. The menu does change up a bit every now and then. The starters are very fun and different. We had the crab tart and zucchini flowers this time around. And gnocchi and mushroom truffle risotto for our mains. Meal was finished off with a bomb Alaska.
The paella was the rich, smoky and flavorsome to the last bite. Service was engaging, and the wait staff knowledgeable and friendly. I want to marry The European!
Overpriced, average at best, not particularly warm service. Have possibly been spoiled by many other fantastic brunch places around town.
My friend and I had a "light lunch" at this place today 6 April 2018, we had a risotto each, and a glass of house wine and the bill came to $105. The food was ok and nothing exception and neither is the portion size bu tmy God, at THIS price, they are digging their own graves as a business. These are 5 star prices for a 2 star café guys! Get a grip and don't rip people off this way. We will NEVER visit this place again. Greedy dils!
Nice intimate setting. Good food, excellent service. Must visit again so I can check out the red wine collection.
Great atmosphere but pricey, small serves and food just ok. I had the large size pasta and seriously it was less than what I’d serve my young kids and half of what I consider normal. Pasta ain’t that expensive guys. I’ve had much better in numerous places around Melbourne- you can definitely do better. My house Sav Blanc was also far from special. Sorry to say!
Friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff, very well put together menu with a diverse selection of European tastes. Let the staff guide you in wine selection, they know their stuff, and have likely tasted the goods!
I didn't know this place existed and I'm so happy I found it. Tucked away, great for business coffee's. Most importantly, fantastic hot chocolates.
