Temperance Hotel

We came for Wednesday steak night and it was pretty good, although my partners medium rare was definitely closer to medium, and my medium was closer to well done. I still enjoyed it though. Chips and salad were really good! Come during happy hour to get slightly cheaper beersies too!

Haven’t visited for decades and loved the place for afternoon drinks. Spacious and well designed and good range of drinks and food.

I stopped in here for Sunday lunch on my last day visiting friends in Melbourne. It had a good vibe and live music from 3pm. We got a selection of food and everyone was really happy with their food. The only disappointing pick was the chips, which seemed a bit stale.
Drink selections are good, and the vibe of the place was really good.
The girl with neck tattoo working behind the bar is also an 11 out of 10 so it's worth coming back to see her alone!

Overall I highly recommend this venue.

Venue is ok but the 5 stars is all for Liam’s service. The place is a 3 but has Liam which makes it a 5. Go Liam!

Terrible experience for our work function. Would never go again.

Firstly, we were rather insulted by the last minute change in prices for canape platters. A price list was mailed at the start of the booking process. After confirming the booking, and sending out invites, I receive a new price list with a 25% jump in price of each platter through ‘shrinkage’ of the number of pieces per platter. Explanation was that they were sample menus only (although pretty much all items on the menu were identical, just more expensive). We proceeded with the booking given it was too late to go elsewhere. Now I wish I had have paid more attention to this huge red flag.

Secondly, our event was an after work event from 5: 30 - 8: 30. The food did not come out until half the people from our party had left – well after 7pm. This meant that most of the food went uneaten as many of our party left earlier than usual to eat elsewhere. I note that the bar staff were very unhelpful after repeated requests for updates on food timing - and one even blamed a member of our party for telling him to delay the food. This was not true at all.

Thirdly, the food quality is not great, and lacked any presentation flair. This may have been another reason why most of it was uneaten. In my view, all food was very over priced for the quality.

If you are looking for a venue for an event, I highly recommend you look elsewhere.

I was facing some personal challenges during the 3 or 4 visits to Temperance Hotel (think 2 missed flights to NZ in as many days) and my demeanour and attire most likely reflected this (to a degree, it's not like they let dishevelled hobos run amuck) however the staff were unfazed and did not let this get in the way of an upbeat, professional and kind approach to their service and hospitality. Barramundi was fantastic. Thanks guys.

Used to be my favourite place to eat but not anymore. The steak special is super tough, can not chew, lots of tissue/tendons through the whole pieces of meat. Chix Parma is way tooooooo dry. Taco is still OK.

A group of us went for a Sunday evening meal, it took almost an hour for the food to come after ordering. They then forgot one of the mains which took another 30 mins to arrive. Most of the dishes were missing ingredients that were listed on the menu. Very poor food, not worth the wait. Will not be going back, very disappointed.

I was strolling chapel street last night and saw that they have a steak night every Monday and Wednesday! Pretty good! We went there around 8 pm, lucky it was not busy. They place is pretty big. You will find seats easily. Our meal came pretty quick. Descent size too. Happy to come back one day:)

Great spot for drinks.especially when the suns out ️Friendly staff. Average food - we ordered honey soy wings (superrrrr salty - did not enjoy) and beef tacos.

Don’t walk past it, just go in and you’ll for sure have a damn good time. One of our favorite bars in S. Yarra! They have weekly specials, happy hour drinks, and best of all…live music on Thursday’s with Bill Golding (one of the best acoustic guitarists in Australia). Not to mention, they also have Luke, hands down, provides the best service and recommendations in this city!

We had dinner and booked up stairs venue - food was great - staff was great. Would go there again.

Looks like a great old school pub from the outside, inside felt a little niteclubby, enjoyed a good bottle of red, lots of bar tables were pre booked for Saturday night.

Nice food and great Dj's on the weekend. I need to check out some of the live music on a Sunday one of these days.

Great pub and my favourite go to along Chapel st. Outdoor seating is mint as is indoor and the garden bar, plenty of space. Generous happy hour too (4-7 Monday to Friday). I ate the barramundi and was impressed with the quality of food. My partner had the burger and loved it.

This was quite a good venue. You could get a table to sit if you and your friends wanted one. Had a fun night.
