Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld reviews
83Kitchen Garden Tour of the organic produce gardens used for the top restaurants at the Royal Mail Hotel. In short, do the tour it's run by the Head Chef Robin Wicken and its VERY informative. It becomes obvious as the 1hr tour progresses being "organic" has complexity! These gardens for the kitchen are stated to be the largest in the southern hemisphere. They are many acres over several properties. When we did it we booked the night before when there were no others but by the start at 10am there were 17 with max 20. It costs $15. A bargain! We had a mixed group with young adults, families and older couples. All got a lot out of it.
Stayed in the cottages twice. The first time was lovely, great service, comfortable, amazing views, peace. Second time.a wedding at the homestead and a ridiculous level of music noise means little relaxation and no sleep. It would have been good to know this when I booked (I wouldn't have come) but I guess they are happy to take my money and not care about the quality of my stay. Won't be back.
Spectacular food at Wickens, comfortable amenities all round, and plenty of local wildlife around you. RMH in Dunkeld is the place to be!
Our stay at the Royal Mail was incredible. The rooms are private, very comfortable and have everything and more that you need. Parker Street Project was unexpected and an experience in and of itself that is worth coming back to. Wickens was remarkable.an experience that will be hard to forget. Finally, a special shout out to the staff who went above and beyond to make our stay perfect.
Yoooo! Parker Street Project was legit.

Believe the hype.
Would make a trip back to Dunkeld just to dine here again.
Hey, anyone want to open a decent pub in Dunkeld? Caus there doesn’t seem to be one here where you can have a beer on a Sunday afternoon. Pity really.
Just ok, no stand outs, nothing unique, basic check in and out with little in between, and sadly nothing in the room to snack, but great beds.just another hotel room with a big price tag
Food was OK.
I'm prepared to pay good money for food but expected a little more from our experience.
Staff were a bit pretentious as well.
Returned for a second visit after 10 years and this time eto enjoy the new Wickens addition. Was privileged to sit at the chefs table inside the kitchen with a ringside seat to culinary magic. Robin looked after us very well. Stunning meal over 5 hours.
Adore the Royal Mail. The staff are kind, helpful and incredibly generous with their time. Both their casual and fine dining options, Parker Street Project and Wicken's Royal Mail respectively, are fantastic and the setting is picturesque at the foot of the Grampians. While you're there do not miss their fabulous wine tasting experience and kitchen garden tour! Both provide greater insight into the unique nature of this historic landmark and destination. Cannot wait to return! Highly recommend.
It is not a cheap place to stay and there are others for a lot less but what you get for the money is a very satisfying experience.
The most expensive rooms have a view of a very imposing mountain but that does not detract from the less expensive rooms. The hotel has a fantastic native garden that is scattered through the grounds.
After a long day in the extraordinary landscape of Gariwerd it is great to relax here. Highly recommended.
I have stayed and eaten here twice now. The accommodation is gorgeous (highly recommend the mountain view room). The pool is stunning and perfect after a long day of hiking in the Grampians. The bistro food is also excellent.
The food at both restaurants is outstanding and well worth the trip. If you're a foodie, it's a must go! Top end and priced accordingly. Sometimes staff outside a city environment can lessen the experience but that's not the case here. All of the staff were fantastic and knowledgeable. However, the hotel in my opinion is just not worth it. The rooms are nice but way overpriced. There are cheaper options nearby which would keep the cost down considerably. Also a cheeky 1% card payment surcharge left a 'sour taste' given the outlay for the experience. Why this isn't built into the price I dont know. Overall a memorable experience.
What can I say. It is fantastic. I love it here. Didn't eat at Wickan's but I can report that the Parker St project is fabulous. Go, you won't regret it.
Called as early as possible to let them know I was sick, and needed to reschedule/cancel my booking. No flexibility at all on their part. You would think a cancellation due to sickness, which is outside my control would at least be credited or allowed to reschedule. If they had have done that I would’ve been happy, but apparently they like to be able to make money for doing as little as possible. Thanks Royal Mail, I’ll be going anywhere else but your establishment in future.
After asking for a cocktail that was not available, the barman thought it would be appropriate to talk down to us and explain (step by step), why this cocktail could not be made. Mansplaining at its finest.
Amazing food, and service. So much detail to the food. Everything was a surprise, a must for anyone who loves food and great wine.
I have only ever had a great time when dining at RMH. The food is always fresh and amazing and the service is always friendly and quick. Even the kids meal is on point! Definitely coming back soon!
I love the shack with a mixture of old and new commodities. The artwork in the accommodation is fascinating to view.
They do what they do well but let's face it: the menu is pretty pretentious. Unfortunately, I encountered one patronising waiter.
