Penang Flavours reviews
66 Very disappointed that in 2024 we have restaurants that do not cater to vegetarians. The only item on their extensive menu that is vegetarian was fried rice. I was extremely disappointed as I had selected this restaurant for a work meeting and was left embarrassed that they could not accommodate to my dietary needs. I rarely check if the venue is veg friendly as most places will accommodate and adjust dishes by removing the meat element - not like I have never had Malaysian food before, it’s never been a problem? !
I would advise - Skip if you have any dietary requirements:)
My absolute fav new place for some DELICIOUS PENANG FOOD! The food here just hits differently. It's like a slap of some childhood nostalgia after thaf first bite. We ordered the asam Laksa and char tang hoon and we loved it! We will be back for more wok heilicious meals!
The Best Prawn Noodles and Lobak I’ve had in Melbourne! The Prawn noodles broth is so flavourful and tasty. Not overpowering neither is it diluted. Just the right umami for a perfect bowl of prawn noodles soup. Good amount of ingredients. All the servers and counter staffs are polite and friendly. Especially a middle-aged woman server who is always busy but smiling and making sure everyone’s needs are met. Queue could be very long on weekends so make sure to be there early. Will definitely be back to try the other dishes that others have ordered and looked so delicious too.
Fried noodles are always my favourite there, especially the char kuay teow, fried egg noodles, fried meehoon
Very delicious and authentic Malaysian food.
Efficient & friendly staff.
Reasonable prices.
Presentable and clean premises.
Highly Recommend.
I wish this place was closer to where I reside as it'll be a weekly affair when I am too lazy to cook.
The restaurant look clean and organise, the food average compare with others malaysia restaurant, the service was okay, the restaurant was full pack last night, was lucky to find spot parking
Had the prawn noodles, char mee and char tang hoon. Overall it was good but not the best I had in Melb.
Prawn noodle’s broth was not as ‘rich’ as I would have hoped. A bit diluted for me.
Char mee and tang hoon were good but the color was a bit bland on the tang hoon.
The fried kuey teow, fried tonghoon and lor Bak are delicious. Very authentic and good flavours. There is always que during dinner time. Service was quick and staffs are friendly.
Had lunch with friends at this location. Found out that this place is related to Straits Cafe. I ordered the Sar Hor Fun as recommended by my colleague. The portion was huge, but I suspect there's MSG in the gravy. Ended up feeling thirsty and tired in the afternoon. Otherwise, the place is clean.
Omg friend showed me this place and now I can’t stop eating here- good portion sizes, good price and flavors are authentic
Like most dining venues of this genre, the attraction is inexpensive tasty food aka hawker street food in a chaotic environment. The problem with these venues is inconsistency in food and service. We experienced both. When the quantity of a not inexpensive dish was noticeably smaller than the table next to us, we enquired with the service staff why. The matter was brought to the kitchen staff who responded crudely and rudely, oblivious to the fact that the kitchen is open and everyone could hear and see their discussion especially how our dish was picked apart by bare hands. The kitchen decided the quantity was fine and to "take it or leave it. " The tension between the kitchen and the service staff was obvious. This, as we all know from Anthony Bourdain and other food bloggers, is common. The problem is the paying customer suffer the indignity of seeing and paying for these kind of inconsistency. To be fair, the service staff tried their best but the kitchen staff, presumably the owners (?), are obviously not bothered at all. It was quite an authentic moment. We decided to send back the order and risk the wrath of the kitchen. Luckily there was none. For all future diners. Caveat emptor.
This place has to be on top of the list for me. My go to is Char kway teow and the chicken ribs (highly addictive). The service is awesome
Enjoyed CKT and especially tang hoon. Yay on Saturday morning. Pretty much filled up 15min after opening. Go early
Very disappointed, waited for an incredible long time. All self service? Excuse me! And the service is terrible!
Stumbled on this hidden gem this past weekend. Great selection of all the Malaysian greatest hits, including refreshing drinks. Friendly efficient service too. Steady steam of locals coming and going. Will definitely be back!
So glad that jacky the chef is back in action! First time trying this vermicelli soup, must say whenever I want a soupy and less oily meal, it will be first choice.
They are doing Hainanese Chicken Rice at a promotion price now.
Yam pork roll ordered as add on - it’s delicious not overly salted.
Will surely come back for more, another must try is trotter noodles.
Excellent char Kurt teow, very inconsistent service with some getting table service and other not
A decent place but not everything is good. Char Kuey Teow and Chicken Ribs weren't great but the nasi lemak with rendang was good. Best dish in my opinion was the char tang hoon. Loh bak was also good! There's a lot of competition in the area unfortunately so not really sure if I'd come back.
Best Char kuay teow and Char mee in the East! I've visited this place 5 years ago and they've improved so much. From quality of food to the interior renovation, everything has went up by leaps (fortunately not the prices though). Their fried rice and noodles are seriously good - the "wok hei" (charred flavouring from good wok cooking) is top notch. Char kuay teow, Char mee, Char tang hoon are all must try dishes. Heard that the prawn noodles are good as well, shall try it next time!
