The Den Salamanca reviews
74We are visitors to Hobart and stopped in for a meal & drink because we liked the atmosphere. It was a Monday and not overly busy so we thought we shouldn’t have to wait long for service. Boy were we wrong! We ordered bao buns at 1.24 & they didn’t arrive until a bit after 2. I also ordered a Prosecco At around the same time. The single server apologised at the time of serving buns for the delay in receiving drink but I waited until 2.21 before finally receiving it. The waiter did waive the fee for drink and, fortunately, we weren’t in a rush to go anywhere but this is the second time in two days I’ve waited an exceptionally long time for service at a business in Salamanca Place. Yesterday we were seated at Evolve? Told they would be back shortly & left after 20 minutes of waiting. Is this a regular thing in this area? I realise it wasn’t the servers fault they were short staffed at The Den, assuming he wasn’t the owner.
First taste of Hobart.wow, beer was great food was great. Had the plate of Gyoza, and the Miso Pork belly. Bloody amazing, and service was very friendly!
Nice atmosphere, friendly service, awesome food, especially the chicken skewers with peanut sauce is a must try!
Nice cocktail bar
services was good
just the music was to loud had to lean right in to hear each other and was watching the couple next to us do the same thing
PS loved the music just wanted to be able to talk as well
Being a local, I visit this bar often, sometimes just for a wine on a weekday. The only food I have tried is the caramelised pork belly with miso. I have had this about 4 times and each time it's been sensational. The vibe is very cosy and I love the gas fires! It's in my top 3 in Hobart.
Update: after 2 1/2 years living in Hobart and regularly visiting the Den, I’m finding the food is not as good. The last 3-4 meals have been almost tasteless. It’s still a lovely venue however. I wonder if there’s a new chef. It’s disappointing!
update, it seems to be getting back to form!

We (A party of 20 family members) came after a meal nearby on the 27th of September and we thought the place looked great. But, the bar staff were so stuck up it seemed like an inconvenience we were there. Through the night one of our party members told me they heard one of the bar staff say "lets close up so that this lot will leave". We all had at least a couple of drinks each and would have stayed but no thanks to arrogant stuck up staff. We went two doors down a few days later to Grape and opposite ends of the scale in terms of staff. Take a leave out of their book.
Good cocktails and great tapas. The Miso Pork was amazing! The bar staff were very helpful in explaining the ordering and recommending drinks and food.
It was way too hot inside though and the seating is super uncomfortable as it is so low. Not somewhere you could sit for hours.
Nice atmosphere, great food and cocktails. Just couldn't see our reservation card on the table as others, but the staff found us a nice spot to sit down very fast.
Do not judge a book by its cover like I did. Wow is all that comes to mind. Superior service, stunning interior, world class food by the amazing chefs. The night was absolutely perfect in every way. A must do whilst in Hobart town. You will not be dissapointed
Great atmosphere, very cosy warm location on a cool Hobart afternoon. Fabulous spot to relax with friends or loved ones. Love meeting the locals and enjoying a relaxing afternoon. Highly recommend calling out at the Den
A grand spot for an evening cocktail.well worth a visit when in Hobart. Could just be your favourite place.
We are on holidays from Queensland, flew in on Monday and first place we were recommended to and stumbled accross was this little gem. First impressions was OMG! Just Stunning, a warm and friendly ambience with a cosy fireplace.
Food was fresh and super tasty.
Will definitely be back before we head home.
Thank you for providing such a beautiful place to dine with good quality food and friendly service.
The design of the bar was atmospheric for a Tassie winter with a beautiful fire place in the centre of the bar. Music was good. Cocktails were tasty. We didn’t eat there but we did enjoy our time by the fire with our cocktails.
First time in here and was rewarded with fantastic bar staff, who were happy, welcoming and friendly, I witnessed some very bad customer attitude that was met with a professional and calm reaction from a bar staff member. Everyone at our table seemed to like the snacks, as all was eaten. Only comment I could make against the place would be it took a while for the table to be cleaned from the dishes and glasses etc was a busy Friday night so understandable.
Nice place. Pity it took over 18 minutes for a single cocktail to be made due to the employee at the time enjoying flirting with some guy instead of doing her job. Sat and watched then when I alerted the staff member in charge she didn't seem to care at all.
I really like their atmosphere here and I often use this place when we come to Hobart. I went to the Den on 18th of June Saturday, it was mistake. I sit down table 28 and there were covered with broken glass and I got cut my hand. I picked up some broken glass and went to the staff (food runner on the second floor Asian guy) and show him my hand and told him to better to sweep and clean up otherwise other people will get hurt. And he said to me “thank you “ I was very shocking I got hand cut and he said was thank you. And I thought He was gonna clean up the sofa straight away and report to his colleague or whoever works there he didn’t. And never comes back to clean or sweep. I understand it was busy because of the dark mofo time but is that ok? If I were him I’ll go sweep the place straight away. His priority is delivering food to customers but I can’t understand.
Waited for one drink over 30 minutes too.
Female? Dining alone? Be prepared for a hostile reception. You couldn’t possibly be there because you’re hungry and would like some nice food. Gave a couple of stars because the food was, at least, pretty good.
I went on Wednesday night. Great atmosphere (nice interior design). Well heated outside. Good selection of drinks. Terrible food unfortunately. Was last there about 12-18 months ago and the bao buns were bad so I had hoped the food would be better now but the chicken was over cooked & the loaded fries were soggy.
Beautiful location and drinks let down by really terrible food.
Putting aside the 30+ minute wait for snacks, the food was below average. Dry and tasteless karate chicken. Dumplings out of a frozen packet (clearly not house made).
We’d come back for drinks, but Tassie has a lot better to offer in terms of food options, even for a quick snack over a drink.
It's fantastic! What I expected to be a fairly touristy spot has consistently been a lovely place to eat and drink for over a year now. Reasonably priced wine list and delicious food, not to mention the comfort of the heaters. What a beautiful and glamourous place to dine.
