Strahan Village reviews
81Amazing place except right now it's cold and rainy. I would love to be here when the weather is good as I think it's a beautiful place and the poor weather is stopping us from seeing the full potential here!
I Would never recommend staying here the bed was terrible and a very bad smell coming through the air-conditioning unit made it almost unbearable to sleep in, When it was made known to staff the following morning we received nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders.
The location was everything. Without it it’s basic and average. The room was pleasant and clean, decent shower, bed + pillows harder than I prefer. The staff on the front desk was pleasant and kind, didn’t go out of their way to accomodate. Ongoing issues with the wifi which makes it harder when minimal phone reception. The restaurant 42 seafood buffet was extremely disappointing, for 75$ I had higher expectations. As a person who often eats fresh and local seafood in SA this was clearly frozen and not local. Only half was seafood and then veggies and salad. The dessert was clearly bought in cheap mini cakes. For a town that has minimal dinning and activities the hotel should offer more
Enjoyed staying in Strahan Village, the room was quirky as it was one of the ones at street front that looked like it used to be a shop. The bed was comforable and the bathroom was huge with a corner spa with nice hot shower over it. We only realised once we arrived that the NRMA own the village and the Gordon River Cruise company (we went with the other company that is family owned World Heritage Cruises - had a fanstastic day out). We did get a 10% disount for being NRMA members at the accommodation which was a bonus. The village is in the middle of town and has it's own restaurant and kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I would recommend the kitchen for breakfast that had some nice bakery choices. But for dinner we couldn't get a table, so book ahead. We ended up at the Tracks Cafe for a burger which is out at the wilderness railway, they were great if you get stuck and like a good burger, we actually ate there both nights in Strahan. So perfect location, great room just limited options when the NRMA have majority control.
Ok so so it has good views dinnings up the road is good. But we have some sad expiries with this place. First our place was very small. Damp and old. Dirty, worn furniture noisy street if you sad outside in the balcony. As i said views are great.
Secondly the door entry card they give you to get in didn't work on the second night we tried to get in.
Got abused for as they said to close to the phone. Did not hat in my wallet. Anyway still 2 more days to go we will see. Then therdly tv. Just the normal channels. Only that there wasn't one that you could watch. Some did work other would break up too much. Bring your own entertainment. Overall not a good place to stay.
Make sure you book your restaurant before you come to Strahan, or bring your own food (noting the hotel has no cooking facilities outside of a kettle). If your not looking to do the Gordon river cruise or train probably best to give Strahan a wide miss, as theres not lot more around.
Dining options are 48 Degrees, Hammers and Risby Cove (Hammers also doesn't take bookings). There is a local supermarket that closes at 1830, Take away shop and that's it.
The staff and Hotel were okay, however with one restaurant closed (Hamers) in town there is nowhere decent to eat unless you like take away or a very average pub meal.
Website photos failed to give a true image of accommodation options. Thought we were getting accommodation at the front of the property so we could go for walks. Instead we were given a room up the hill away from everything with spectacular views of the car park. Room was dated, no aircon at all. Turned off the heater as it was cooking inside and ended up sitting in my car to get some fresh air. Definitely not worth the money we paid. Overall, very disappointing stay.
You really have to stay somewhere in Strahan if you are doing the early departure for the wonderful cruise to Gordon River. This place is good
Great place to stay when doing thr river cruise. Most of the accommodation is owned by NRMA and there's a few choices. Our room was good except noisy from upstairs and other rooms using the shower sounded like a jet taking off. But lovely spot overlooking the harbour.
I'm not sure why Strahan Village gets such mixed reviews. We had room 14, it was one of the cheapest rooms available. I got a deal booking through my NRMA membership and honestly went in with not too many expectations because I knew I was booking for price and location.
We were pleasantly surprised. The views from our room and the balcony were beautiful, the room was very spacious and clean. Bed was comfortable and the proximity to nearby restaurants and cruises was ideal.
I think this place is excellent value for money.
Tip - make sure to make your dinner reservations well in advance of arriving in Strahan. There are not many dining options and I saw so many people being turned away because they didn't have a booking.
Everything was just perfect for a little break over Easter. From the friendly staff at check in to the lovely room and great weather it was a memorable adventure. The cottage, although old, was airtight, warm and very comfortable. Linen was crisp, shower water nice and hot. TV big and bright, I could live here!
Only drawback was the limited dining options on a busy long weekend. The highly regarded seafood buffet was booked out and the pub had a long wait. But we had a lovely buffet breakfast the next morning overlooking the bay.
TOP TIP: Book all the activities in advance when you book the accommodation. I wasn't able to go on the railway, boat cruise or buffet as I didn't book enough in advance. This was partly compounded by it being Easter - their busiest week.
Incredible location to enjoy Strahan. Our spa room was very comfortable and had a great view of the Harbour.
We checked in at 3pm and were given drink vouchers at the local, indeed only pub as our room wasn't ready.
At the pub we were told it was closed due to a covid outbreak in the town.
Returning back to the motel reception I explained that it was not safe to stay under these circumstances and also as Strahan is a tiny town and at that time in the afternoon we had no options for a meal or anything else.
The receptionist was extremely rude and refused to refund our payment.
It's a very long drive back to Burnie to avoid a Covid outbreak!
I'm afraid I could not recommend Strahan Village
Great little village, good place to catch a cruise to Sara Island, Sara Island was the first penal colony, before Port Arthur. It was the site where a group of convicts stole a ship and sailed it to Chile. There story can be seen in the Stage Play, The ship that never was. This play has been running non stop for 29 years Australia's longest running play. A must see when staying in Strahan.
Good location, rooms seem a little out dated.
But still good area, parking and close to the river cruises dock.
Rooms were lovely - some rooms were very inaccessible due to the amount of steps. We had to change rooms because we are elderly and couldn't drag our bags up so many steps. However, the staff were very accommodating in our need to change. It is a beautiful location.
Location is great. Rooms are clean and comfy but expensive for what you get. Make sure if you are staying multiple nights you request your room to be made up. Apparently the fine print states that rooms are not made up every day. I think for the price you pay your room should be made up every day. The covid excuse is over done.
An interesting development along the Esplanade in the township of Strahan where it seems that the NRMA operates a range of accommodation, including individual original cottages, the 42 Degree View restaurant, the Hamer's Hotel and the Gordon River Cruise Company (the grey boat not the red boat). Not that there's anything wrong with that. Our accommodation was a cute little cottage (called "Henty") that was just next to the reception area. The cottage was renovated and spacious. We experienced wet and windy weather and the wind tended to whistle through the gaps around the door HOWEVER we were warm and cosy once I'd figured out how to make the split system warm the place. Nicely renovated bathroom, comfortable bed, overall very happy with our accommodation.
The service in particular was amazing. Vikas kindly let myself and family keep our bags at reception with no hesitation, so that we could enjoy the Strahan River Cruise. Hats off to Vikas and the lovely people at Strahan Village.
The location of Strahan Village is perfect and the service was above and beyond. When we checked in we were given a nicer room with a beautiful view of the bay. The restaurant had a lovely buffet, however it was a little pricey. I stupidly forgot my iPad, wallet and a few personal items. We received a call the moment the staff at Strahan Village found our items and they posted everything to us. Nothing was missing. Amazing, kind and responsible people work at Strahan Village. Thank you so much!
