The atmosphere in the Tanswell is truely magical. If you plan to dine or stay in this historic town I highly recommend the Tanswell Commercial Hotel. Great food, service and rooms.

The menu is pretty limited. There are no starters. I got the steak. It was very thin and overcooked. We have never been to a place that only serves your food with a small side salad. You choose between chips and salad. Def overpriced for what you got. The side salad was basically mixed lettuce with a bit of dressing. The Parma was nice, but again just served with a small side salad.

All the glitter but no substance. As a long-term local will not return or be recommending to anyone. Disappointed in many ways.
Service terrible. So slow. Food looked fancy but not cooked properly, raw and cold on inside. Tiny range of boutique tap beers. No kids menu. Not actually child friendly in any possible way. Wobbly tables. Smoke filled dining room. Overcharged for meal. Pretty crummy experience. Two hours of my life I won't get back. Just a big no thanks and not returning for our family.

Good Honest Victorian Pub, please give them a chance as we did with 8 of us, it has been a rough ride in the hotel business the last couple of years.

Absolutely 10/10! Beautiful old hotel with the most delicious food and friendly, efficient and knowledgeable service people. Best pie I have ever had, will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Fabulous food! The TCH, a grand old Victorian era building, may look tired around the edges, but the dining experience is excellent. Fast, efficient service and delicious food. Try the southern fried chicken, super crisp and juicy all at once, or the amazing beef cheek, rich and brawny, with silky mash and sharp, clean gremolata, the perfect counterpoint to the unctuous braise. A top pub meal!

This place is pretty atrocious to be honest. Vibe was good but don’t expect the kitchen to be able to produce any food quickly. We placed our order when the kitchen opened at 6 and their cook was having a great time chatting to some band members playing that night. We ordered at 6 and told that the kitchen was now not opening until 6.15 (as obviously the cook was still chatting and hadn’t even attempted to do his job). We waited. And waited. The dining room was filling up and the diligent waitress (who was lovely and probably just as worried as we were) continued to take orders. At 6.43 the cook sent some chips to a table who ordered just before us to placate them. This was the sole production of this kitchen for 45 minutes. Two bowls of chips (I guess the fryer was off). The mood of the dining room was starting to turn. We were offered some chips by the lovely people at the next table who had the only coveted food in the now full dining room. Finally at 6.55 some food arrived. It was actually inedible. My fears about the fryer were true. Wasn’t turned on till too late and kids fish and chips were so oily as to be inedible. Worst still the leek and blue cheese gnocchi was an abomination which strangely came from the oven and was a burnt on the top, gluggy, gluey, and horrible. After a few mouthfuls it was time to go. Regrettably I paid for half of the meal that shouldn’t be served in the first place.
My suggestion is to try the Chinese restaurant round the corner. Country fried rice and prawn crackers never tasted so good.
The cook should retire or try another industry. Move on buddy. I just hope the cook isn’t also the owner as they are doomed.

The best fish and chips I have ever had! Everyone on our table absolutely loved their food! It was a bit cold but the waiter tried everything to get that fire going properly. Very friendly staff! Would definitely come back

Had a drink in the front bar and was in awe of the original decor and atmosphere of this pub. Great service. This place is definitely worth a visit just to take in the historic feeling.

I chose to eat the beef cheeks. I chose well. Oh my God. The flavour was nothing short of Devine. Honestly, I'd like to meet the cow my meal came from, just to shake her by the hoof and congratulate her on just how damn tasty she was. But I guess it's too late for that. Oh well. And the mash. I mean, mash is just mash, right? But no. It paired perfectly with aforementioned beast of wonder, both in taste and texture. So smooth. Such aargghlll.

The wife and kids were pretty happy with their meals too, but I wasn't really paying attention to that.

We didn't stay here but went for dinner. I was not impressed to be greeted by someone in shorts and stained tee shirt and be called "mate". Had to ask to see the menu whereby a big chalkboard was plonked nearby our table (and even after we had ordered was left there.later another diner was wandering around looking for a menu so we called him over and he carried it off). 35 mins later our meals arrived. My husband's $22 serve of gnocchi was very small (not much more than a cupful) and was overcooked mush. My Southern fried chicken, chips and coleslaw came with the bowl of coleslaw sitting on top of the food. The coleslaw was inedible. $25 and 4 small pieces of chicken and some chips. I would definitely not recommend this hotel for a meal

Stayed there a while ago as was visiting Beechworth and could not find anything else. Big mistake! Cockroaches swimming about the bathroom and breakfast area. Very loud all through the night could not sleep a wink. Miserable place!

We had a very disappointing experience trying to eat lunch here. After waiting more than 50 mins for our meals (with a young child in tow), someone came and told us that our "docket was misplaced". The establishment was not very busy and it was hard to understand how the waitstaff and kitchen had failed to communicate about our order.they offered us nothing but additional waiting time for our meals! We said okay, we would continue to wait, but that we would like a discount off the bill. The person who had spoken to us went to ask the owner about this and returned to let us know that the answer to this request was "no". I was quite disgusted that we were offered absolutely nothing, not even a free drink or some bread, when we had waited all that time, with a small child, and they had completely stuffed up the order.
I would also like to add that I ordered a glass of sav blanc, and when my partner went to get me a second glass (because the wait staff failed to offer) he was told "we don't have sav blanc by the glass". Huh? This is a pub we're talking about.and it turned out they had given me some other kind of wine, but didn't mention to me that it wasn't sav blanc. I thought this was really deceptive of them! We left in disgust, without eating. I couldn't believe they wouldn't even take $5 off the bill after the experience we had. We are Beechworth locals and to be treated so badly by a business that we would have happily supported has left a bad taste. Try the Ox and Hound or the Brewery either side of this badly run operation. Better food and better service by far.

Hostess was rude and abrupt. Asked for lemonade and southern and lemonade and was given lemon squash and lemon squash with southern. Scotch fillet steak came with a pepper sauce so we asked for the pepper sauce to be on the side as my partner can't have much pepper and the steak was coated in it. Asked for a muscato and in a luxurious wine region, they had no moscato and suggested a Rosè which was dry and chalky. The staff were dressed in tshirts and jeans with volleys on. Not professional, nothing made them stand out from others. Menu was written on a chalk board and was very restricted. While we were dining early in the evening they even ran out of oysters. Hard Rock Cafe written on ones shirt. Very very casual. Our wait staff was not nice, quite rude actually. Not impressed at all. The only negative part to our whole Beechworth time. Never go here again. Waste of money. Overpriced and very underwealming.

Ok, I have to say the food that James is pushing out of the kitchen is just amazing. I've eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world and his Dori Cheeks has to be up there with the best.
Great staff, good bands awesome food best pub in town, keep up the good work guys

Basic rooms to sleep in. Breakfast was included although it was only toast food was very nice for dinner and the staff allowed us to be a little noisier than we should have been. In the middle of town.

My friend and I tried the duck spring rolls (2) and they were very nice. We had for main a scotch fillet med. Med/well and both were absolutely amazing and sooooo very tender. Spoke with the chef and said don't change a thing with the steak.
Would go back again for the steak.

My mother and I had lunch here. The food was absolutely terrible. There was nothing mexican at all about the tacos and my lamb kebab was over cooked roast lamb pieces with absolutely no Lebanese flavour or flare. The duck spring rolls had no duck at all or Asian flavours and my mums trout dish was very underwhelming. After complaining I wasn’t offered a replacement or an apology. I’ve lived in the area for five years and looked forward to trying their impressive sounding menu. My advice, don’t bother.

The " Band room " did the job on a fully booked out busy saturday night. Can't complain about the room charge. The restaurant is well priced with a good range of food options and quality meals delivered in a timely fashion considering a full house.
It was a bit noisy after closing time though
