Tan Thanh Loi reviews
53 Your go to in Footscray for the classic no nonsense broken rice.
Always busy with diners and customers ordering takeaway.
Metal tables make you feel like you’re in Vietnam with a lady yelling over crackly microphone that the orders are ready from the kitchen.
I’ve seen previous reviews regarding portion size but the sizes are sufficient for me.
We came in just after lunch rush time because we saw the restaurant had a long queue for take away, so we thought they must be serving decent meal. Not to our surprise, our expectation has been exceeded. I really enjoyed the pho and grilled pork on vermicelli. The portion is decent and the taste is heavenly.
The serving time is also pretty quick eventhough the restaurant was constantly full during our visit.
Definitely come back to this store again.
Best cơm tấm in Australia, you can smell the charcoal before you get to the restaurant. They've also got the best chả trứng I think I've ever had, sweet and meaty. Always friendly service, even with a line out the door. Can't beat it.
Highlights are the dry rice noodles with pork and prawns, vermicelli with grilled pork and bun Bo hue. Also tried the crab noodles which is good for $16. Real crab and thick rich sauce but not spicy. Coffees are strong and sweet. Coconut drink ice is made from coconut water. Grilled pork banh mi is quite dry but tasty the next day. Pho was ok, a little sweet.
As a Vietnamese who is craving for authentic grilled pork broken rice (Com Tam), this is the best and closest to the Vietnamese taste in Melbourne
Excellent pork chop broken rice. Very authentic style restaurant - feels like VN. Love that they use charcoal to cook the pork - it really elevates the flavour.
Standards have dropped considerably. Meat (whilst still grilled) is no longer fresh off the grill. Wait times are extremely long, and many items off the menu are no longer offered.
Will have to find a new place for Hu tieu mi.
The classic dodgy Vietnamese restaurant experience with non existent customer service but great food.
I had the broken rice with egg and tried this place because it looked to specialise in broken rice over pho.
I’m giving a 4 because the egg did not deliver on a peak broken rice experience, everything else was great though.
Been going to this place for many years now, and will be back again! Excellent customer service and food.
Best Vietnamese restaurant I've eaten at, I was born and raised in rural Vietnam until the age of 15 and this is the most authentic Vietnamese food I've eaten in Victoria. I always come back! I recommend ordering the Com Tam (aka. Broken rice) :)
Always best to dine in there and have their grilled pork chop, shredded pork on broken rice with extra spring rolls.
Friendly service fresh tasty authentic Vietnamese food. Price very reasonable. A little too much onion in the Pho. I always ask for less and they do no problems
AMAZING FOOD, generous portion, so affordable. One of the best vietnamese restaurants in melbourne: D
The best authentic Vietnamese food. Place us not much to speak of inside but the people are friendly and the service is great.
Simply the best Viet broken rice (com dia) in Footscray. Generous servings with a cheap price tag. The highlight is the charcoal grilled pork or chicken broken rice. Always add their home made crispy chilli oil on the side to add more kick. You might need to line up on the weekend as they can get very busy.
Ordered com tam, the pork suon taste was great but that was really all that was good other than the side soup and fish sauce.
My proportions were sad looking and egg wasnt runny. Quite lackluster. Dissapointing and sad looking: (
Broken rice with grilled pork is so delicious. Brought back Sai Gon's famous dish memory. Well done!
Love the broken rice from this institute. You can smell the charcoal meat cooking from literally a mile away and it taste just as good as it smells.
Often do takeaway meals with extra meat so it's pretty much a staple for the Viet community.
Their banh mi with the roast charcoal pork chop is also another lit item if you haven't tried yet.
A hole in the wall but the food is amazing.
All the reviews are pointing to their delectable pork chop and I do agree with it.
We had pork chop with broken rice as well as pork chop with vermicelli and the serving of pork chop in vermicelli is huge! It’s of course healthier with lots of greens.
The only slight shortfall is that we felt very thirsty after the meal
The signature dish is broken rice. The only place in Melbourne does justice for this dish. Most of other restaurants fry the meats, but this place grills them.
