Shanghai Street (Chinatown) reviews
58Good food, very busy. Servers generally good. One accidentally knocked my tea cup and Spiller hot tea everywhere and my leg. She apologized and helped to clean up. Other than that. The menu items that are shanghainese food, are genuine shanghainese food/flavour and styles. (Confirmed by my mate that was born there.)
The crispy pork wasn't crispy in the slightest (greasy pork would be a better description) and the pork buns were doughy as all hell. Essentially, the food is average. Though, in saying that, you can basically bring whatever alcohol in and its all good. Literally just rock up with a case, a bottle of vodka, a goon sack etc.its like the most BYO place ive ever seen
Have been there many times and the quality control is amazing. Taste the same everytime. Especially good on a cold night. The texture, the soup, the thickness of the Xiao long bao.yummy. My photos were taken AFTER we had started, the tummy was too quick than the camera.
All dumplings are nice, and could not be more authentic. Cold dishes are fine, but you can find much better choice elsewhere in Melbourne city. Don't Don't Don't try those hot dishes unless you have a unique taste.
Always happy with the food at Shanghai Street. Best quality dumplings in Chinatown.
Wontons in chilli oil and peanut sauce are some of my favorites!
Wow! Excellent. We’ve visited four times in the space of a couple of weeks and have enjoyed the delicious food and fantastic service every time. Reasonably priced and great portions with free Chinese tea to wash it all down. Would highly recommend. Don’t worry about the queues, they move fast and it’s worth the wait!
Good food, the fried pork buns are great. Well priced - can comfortably feed 4 people for about $60-70 if you just go for dumplings and a share dish or two.
Efficient but impersonable service as is typical in these types of restaurants. That's ok, because we came for the food. Ordered several dumpling dishes, fried rice, and shanghai fried noodles. Don't order the vegetable dumplings. It is literally just green veg inside and they have a bitter chemical taste and smell to them. They are also under seasoned compared to the other meat based dumplings. I suspect they soaked their vegetables in bicarb solution to keep their green colour. All other dishes were delicious. I would still recommend this restaurant for the other dishes.
Very good service, great atmosphere. The taste of food is exceptional, as can reflected by the fact that the restaurant is usually full with a line during popular hours. Due to the nature of the food served, however, customers usually dine for shorter amounts of time meaning that even the longer queues only require you to wait an upwards of 20 minutes, definitely worth it if you have the time.
Dumpling heaven. There's quite a queue to get a table at dinner time but the line moves fairly quickly. You get to order while waiting in line and once you're seated the food comes quickly.
I loved the dumblings. Juicy and full of soup on the inside, but sealed shut. The place really gets busy especially during lunch time
The fried Shanghai noodles was delicious and so was the xiao loong pau (dumplings). Despite the restaurant being crowded and we had to wait in line for a table, were seated pretty fast. Service was also fast & staff were polite.
The line up outside this place gives away that this place is good.
Cheap tasty dumplings and noodles. Nothing fancy.
Worth a try.
Xiaolongbao is not as juicy as I imagine. Actually I feel like it is just a big meatball with bun. Sorry, but I won’t recommend it to my friends. Considering its large serving size, I would give it 3 stars.
Loved mapotofu here. Huge portion. Even when I order soup, I got in huge bowl rather than usual serving bowl. Quite surprised.
China style type of food, hence expect it to be salty and oily. Not refined and maybe a touch better than your typical neighbourhood Chinese restaurant. Then again having tried several other Shanghainese restaurants around the city, they are all not great.
Always good dumplings, however tonight the pastry was thicker and harder than usual. Although the service is quick; if you understand service as someone bringing the food, and putting it on the table only. Consistently non existent care for anything else you want or need.
I expected a lot cause every time I came to Melbourne, I saw a long queue in front of this restaurant. I ordered beef soup and xiao Lin bao. To be honest both were just mediocre not tasty at all. The meat is pinkish which made me scared. So I don’t understand why people come here. Perhaps that’s the food quality here In general. Also it contains quite a lot of MSG, I felt my face became numb right after I stepped out.
Pretty good dumplings. Good value for money and service was actually fast. Bit of a wait in peak times (10 minutes maybe)
