Went to Rock Sugar with couple of girl friends and we had a great time! The cocktails were absolutely amazing! My favourite is the Rockstar Martini. Food was incredible too. The oysters, scallops, soft shell crabs and snapper. It's hard to decide which dish was the highlight of the night as we loved them all! Will definitely return!

Firstly, if you are reading this, go to a different restaurant. Secondly, massive disappointment, this business has a perfect setup and great interior decor but very sad to see this business run by staff/managers who are absolute amateurs and still think they are in high school with their attitude and their very poor customer service skills. Food is average, not what I expect for paying premium prices. Quick word of advice to the owner (coming from a business owner), remove all staff including chefs, and re-hire ASAP.

Was dying to try this place for a while now.first and definitely the last time. If i could id give them negative stars.
1. Service was extremely appalling,
2. Food was below average and over priced.
3. We were extremely rushed

We sat down and within a time spam of 5 mins we had been asked 3 times by different girls if we were ready to order, when we were and looked towards the manager she saw us and completely ignored us on two occasions. We ordered with someone else, food came out we ate then eventually ordered dessert, before dessert came out a waitress came over and said ‘we will be needing you to pay the bill as we have another table booked in’ um we were there for 1hr and booked the table in ourselves? She gave me the machine and left it for me to “sort out”. Dessert came and all eyes were on us waiting for us to hurry up to get up with manager hovering past us 3 times waiting for us to finish to take our plates not only that she removed menus right from under our phones and walked off, 10/10 service. But get this, we went to the toilet to come back to our table gone lol.

Food was real below average and way too over priced, frozen dumplings, over salted tuna and a beef cheek tender but really bland with a bad garnish.
Rock sugar needs some upgrade on workers especially that manager who has no idea what customer service is.

Highly recommended if you want to spend 100 plus on nibbles with 0/10 service.
On a positive note: bartenders made a killer banana espresso martini

We visited Rock Sugar Melbourne on a Sunday lunch and it was empty. The food is a bit pricey. You can get just as good Asian food at a lower price.
The toilets are unisex

This is trés groovy. It ramps up during the evening with young people coming in, dark lighting and coloured lighting n all that. Nice food. Good service

The place had a nice feel to it. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food we ordered was delicious, l especially liked the pork bao buns and the massaman curry and beef cheek. Cocktails were good, but the desserts were a bit disappointing- we had the mango coconut pan a cotta and an ice cream bun- not very good, but overall we enjoyed and would return.

I expected that I would enjoy this place much more than I actually did. My husband and I came here on a Saturday evening for dinner and were easily the oldest people in the whole restaurant (we are in our early thirties). Most of the other diners were at most between 20 and 25 years old, so if you are in that age range, perhaps your experience would be different. The cocktails are delicious and the service is fine, staff are polite, the food was fairly good but not outstanding. The thing we found lacking was atmosphere, despite the fact that the restaurant was full and noisy there was just no atmosphere at all. I’m not really sure why, but that’s how we both felt. Courses were also rushed, such that we had too many dishes on the table at a time. I liked the decor, especially the cute pink chopsticks!?

Thai restaurant meets trendy Melbourne bar: Great Thai food and a cool vibe with an excellent list of cocktails, all served with a friendly smile

Absolutely Love!
I took my mum here for mother’s day and the atmosphere was so cool, not to mention amazing food (highly recommend the pork belly buns)!

1 star as staff were polite and helpful. Beer was expensive. Table we sat at was a stool each up against the wall. Food was expensive, bland and the meat was tough, it was all edible so not sent back, but it was not a, just edible price. Don't waste your time and money.

Rockout with your cocktails out!

Prior to this visit, I went to Rock Sugar in the past for a friend’s birthday do, it was a fun experience – my non-foodie friends enjoyed the cocktails and nibbles. There is a good vibe to this place, they have some great music that leans to a younger, more affluent market.

Rock Sugar is on the quiet end of Malvern Road, so to the untrained eye, you would think it’s residential and posh art galleries, but alas, there is a little gem called Rock Sugar – that people know of, but you wouldn’t necessarily walk past if you’re not in the area.

The venue is tight, so the tables of 2 are around the bar or by the wall. So for a better experience you’re better off going as a group. I was invited to try a few things.

The cocktails is why you come to Rock Sugar. I had my cocktail in a bubble tea cup and my friend had the Rockstar Martini in a proper glass which as the far superior choice in terms of taste. The passionfruit puree and caramel worked well with the vodka and lime. The Blue Bird in the bubble tea cup was fun to try.

The food offerings are asian-fusion eclectic. With any menu that is varied, there are hits and misses. I enjoyed the pork belly pineapple baos and the corn. I’d skip the roti and satay sauce. The dessert offering I had to choose because it’s named after a Spice Girls song ‘Spice Up Your Life’ which is great to share. The menu definitely complimented the cocktail offerings.

All in all, there is a great modern vibe to Rock Sugar which great cocktails and some decent nibbles that edge on fusion. The “Feed Me” menu is reasonably priced and something that I’d be keen to do next time I’m here.

4* for the cocktails and the ambiance.
