Penang Road reviews
66Got a bonus beetle in my meal. The food is extremely oily and the boiled eggs are so old and rubbery. Rice was super broken and mushy. Staff couldn't care less when I returned it and just asked if I wanted another one. As if.
Extremely disgusting customer service. I've never come across such rude service before in my life. I will never step foot into this place again.
Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy the foods as much as expected.they were a bit tasteless and oily. Staff watching us a bit oddly as well (I personally didn’t feel comfortable). However, food portion was big as we couldn’t finish them all).
Thanks
Unfortunately we did not enjoy our meal as anticipated. The char kway teow was too sweet for my liking and lack authenticity (even for aussie standards). The rice for the chicken rice had too much ginger and the BBQ chicken and hainanese chicken was bland. Find some where else in Melbourne for Penang food. We did not try the Laksa. According to the other reviews it was passable?
Unsanitary restaurant and kitchen.
The cleanliness and sanitary conditions of the restaurant and kitchen is worthy of 0 stars. I ordered a Nasi Goreng and Roti with Satay Sauce and could not speak more poorly for both dishes.
Not only was the nasi goreng bland, and tasted if it was made with old rice that was reheated. The satay sauce had a dead fly that looked like it had been marinated in the batch of sauce. To add to it, the sauce tasted disgusting and off. When I called and told the manager / owner of the situation with the fly, he simply told me if I drove down he would replace the sauce? I told him I wanted to hand the food back and get a full refund to which he declined. This customer service and health standards are absolutely disgusting.
I have reported this restaurant to the Department of Health.
Food was not good. My kids ordered roti canai and the curry was served cold. The roti canai tasted like ready made, taste same as Kawan Roti brand. Took away nasi lemak, sambal was less than one teaspoon. $100 just went to the drain.
Haven't had the chance to dine in but I'm always satisfied with their take aways. Excellent customer service too!
DISGUSTING… my partner was halfway through eating his Roti bread when he came across a giant marinated blowfly in the peanut satay sauce
We contacted the restaurant and they said they couldn’t give a refund for the food and instructed we drive back to “replace” the sauce… Such poor customer service (I wish I could give 0 stars).
I have contacted food safety to inform them of the issue as this blowfly would have been marinated in everyone’s satay sauce from today’s orders 25/01/2022 (or god knows how long they keep the sauce for) … YUCK
This restaurant owner Mr. Kai Yin cheated my Malaysian client and swindled his money AUD 160k. He opened Penang Village in Donvale and then closed it without notifying him. Kai Yin or known as Roy or Ben or Ben Yin, he will keep change his name to scam peoples. Beware of this Chinese guy. He may lure investors or peoples with interest to migrate to Australia and cheat them. Law suit and Police action is on the way to him.
Hidden gem in the city. All the dishes I have tried had an unique taste, aroma and will activate your taste buds for sure. Simply superb go for it and enjoy the feast!
Poor service and average food. We ordered online through an app however when we arrived to pick up the food they didn't have all the items we ordered and did not want to give us out money back for the item they couldn't provide to us. After a long back and forth they gave us back the money for that item and we took the rest of the food home. The food was very average with one dish (Rendang) inedible. Would not go back and would not recommend.
The food is great but their location is quite small. It's good to try this place for the food but if you're eating to fellowship may not be ideal as there are lots of people in the queue. Thank you!
Ordered 1 laksa and 1 nasi lemak ytd through hungry panda, the rice delivered are not well cooked at all its still RAW! I wondering they have any eyes disease or not. As a Malaysian, I never know nasi lemak only got ONE ikan bilis ONLY!
I love ordering the beef rendang and the bbq chicken, bbq pork and chicken rice. Super cheap and super delicious I love it so much
Malaysian cuisine may not look vast but every region has their unique touch, very specific to that region, and believe us when we say that it tastes absolutely different. Penang Road offers that uniqueness very very specific to Penang.
Omg!
Char Kway Teow and Nasi Lemak with Beef Curry were 5 / 5.
Flavors - Bang on!
Tender and Succulent Meat - Bang on!
Dishes Cooked Perfect - Bang on!
And guess what? It's absolutely inexpensive.
This place is quite casual, and you pay prior, and getting your attendant's attention can be difficult but a very small thing yo what is being offered.
Definitely retuning!
Ordered delivery of their Laksa a few times during lockdown. Bagged really well, quick preparation, got my food less than 25 minutes and served as hot as dining in. Kudos to the staff.
To sum it up lackluster and unhygienic.
Penang Road undeservingly features on the A-List Southeast Asian food in Melbourne, undeserved not just for hygiene issues but because really the food is mediocre and the quality is appalling. On entering it's a real hole in the wall which is charming but that gives way to the general ambiance that really no one running this restaurant is responsible for how uninviting the rest of the dining experience is. On entering and being seated right after opening at 1700, a very audible, annoying and incessant ring is heard from their meal delivery app urgently demanding and screaming for attention. Another observable issue is that everything is grimy. They have hand sanitizer near the entrance but what is the point if their tattered and grubby menu is a potential disease vector, on going to the back for the washroom, the Japanese 'Noren' cloth divider that is placed at face level and at one stage was white, is heavily soiled and brown with dirt from patrons and kitchen staff entering and using the restrooms. There's no avoiding it as well as it's down two steps making ducking underneath unlikely and awkward so everyone is forced to touch the same dirty cloth that everyone has touched on the way to and back from using the toilets.
So if that is what it's like eating in what about take away/ordering out?
Unapologetically the food follows a similar lack of attention to detail and unconcerned care. Ordered a Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry, the curry even if prepped before hand was warmed up in a microwave having presented a ring of bubbling and curry sticking to the edge of the bowl, the Nasi while tasting of coconut had been from the night before as it was mushy & broken and probably the easiest to recognize was the fried egg which had a solid yolk and the biggest offense, the accompanying slices of cucumber that had been long ago sliced and exposed to air, in that they looked tired and were bone dry.
So what about the other dishes? I ordered the Mee Goreng, seasoned different then what I'm used to and that isn't inherently bad but its also not Mee Goreng and, while I do have plenty to add my litmus is the Nasi Lemak. Would I go back and try other dishes, in fairness. No. The restaurant is filthy.
OK so discounting all of the above and objectively looking at the price point of paying paying $14 while sitting in this grimy restaurant or ordering from home. Is it worth it? Absolutely NOT! There are tons of restaurants that actually care and are fighting to survive after not just lock down but the continuing lack of foot traffic, plenty of them are fighting to stay alive and gain patrons, plenty of them offer meals at this price point, plenty care about what they actually serve and serve quality.
Penang Road just doesn't care so why should you care to eat here. Huge miss!
I love this place. Been here quite a lot of times and never been disappointed. I and my wife both love the food and tried the entire menu. Its value for money and a place where you can go multiple times.
Best laksa I’ve had in Melbourne! I had the chicken breast laksa. It was silky smooth and simply delicious! Will drive back for another.
This place is amazing. Packed full of authentic flavours. Never fails to disappoint! Good work team!
