New Shanghai Emporium Melbourne

One of my favourite dumpling place in the city. I love pretty much everything on the menu. If you love truffle, please try their truffle xialongbao and truffle dumpling. Lion’s head soup is a must to try. Dumplings with peanut and chilli sauce, ribs, salted eggs, can’t remember what else.been here too many times. Service is pretty quick, for the table or the food. Great for sharing as you could order quite a few to try.

Came here today for lunch and ordered our favourites

We just received our first order from here, and we've been wanting to try it out for quite some time. Excellent food and prompt service.

Shanghai Taste/New Shanghai was a great option when you feel like Chinese (well, Shanghainese specifically). Located strategically at Emporium in Melbourne CBD, they served a pretty large selection of dumpling, meat and vegetable dishes. The food was great (their Peking duck was my favourite), and their portions were generous making the meals of good value. Bright modern venue. Very friendly (and fast!) service.

Taste and quality of food was terrible when my partner and I went, the meat smelt and tasted off. We left half our food and went to Tim Ho Wan instead.

Pretty good restaurant. The ordering process through an app is a bit weird. The dumplings were nice, might try more next time I go.

My phone was being repaired so couldn’t order via the barcode. Placed my order with one of the staffs in restaurant, waited for 30min and still not getting even the starters. Asked one of the stuff if my meal is still far away, I was told impatiently that it will come. One minute later the same stuff came back to me and said that my order wasn’t gone through.

My son loves Chinese food- specifically dumplings, so I have tried many places. New Shanghai is just okay. The scallion pancakes, or should I just say pancakes, had a total of 2 pieces of scallion (yes I counted) ; but the dumplings were pretty nice.

Terrible service. Accepted order on menu log and had drive go to restaurant. I waited over an hour and then menu log tell me that even though the restaurant accepted the order they then closed! Not good enough! Dodgy restaurant. Avoid at all costs.

So we dine once and now we are sent spam. Great to know our data is being abused through your ordering system.

Fantastic dumplings, you must try the truffle variety Devine! The crispy tofu is also amazing came in for light lunch and ended up leaving having over eaten we will be back. Thank you to the staff whom provided great service. I was to busy enjoying my meal to take photos sorry.

Everything we ordered was presented beautifully and delicious. There wasn't 1 dish that we ordered that we didn't enjoy and their fruit slushies where amazing. The had a large range of food with reasonable prices. I would definitely go back and highly recommend checking it out.

WE visited for Mothers Day and it was an interesting experience. The decor is lovely, we sat on the balcony area. The food was delicious and the menu has a great choice of dishes.

Thats where the rest of the experience went downhill.

The place was woefully understaffed. It's very impersonal. You have to order food and drinks online which we assume is to cut down on employing staff.

Drinks order was missed. When our drinks eventually arrived, 1 glass was cracked with a crack running top to bottom. The lemon, lime and bitters had the tiniest sniff of bitters, maybe a couple of drops.

Don't expect food to arrive in a timely manner. The place wasn't busy, maybe a third full.

There were 4 of us. Our order didn't arrive with a few dishes bought out together. Food arrived in dribs and drabs with long waits in between. The first dish arrived and it was a full 15 plus minutes later until the next arrived. The dumplings arrived 30 minutes after the first dish. The golden skin chicken dish was missing the garlic and chilli sauce.

1 person got to eat while we watched as they were so slow in the kitchen to get food out to customers. Their service is terrible.

Waiters were hard to find and completely avoided eye contact with guests. If you need more water, we had to get up and find a waiter.

Clearly they are trying to cut down on staff numbers to reduce wages.

This has always been one of my favourite places for dumplings. Better food and lower price compared to Din Tai Fung. Would take this place over DTF any day.

One of the worst service you can get. Staff ignore, slow, unresponsive. Food is not as good as when it first opened. But the menu is still quite interesting and has a good variety.

Food is pretty good.
This restuarant takes contactless table service to next level. Staff takes you to a table with no qr code. Water is self service after asking staff. When food came, there were no utensils. Once i got the utensils, there were no sauces. And because there is no service around, i had to fetch everything myself. The only service i got was delivery of food.
To top the night off, there was a nice ratatouille that appeared behind us, we theb decided to leave after that. Staff was also notified and didnt seem interested.

If you like your dumplings, give this a miss.
It's underwhelming in terms of service, food flavour, drinks selection, atmosphere.

A girlfriend and I came here as a late lunch treat to break up shopping. It was the ultimate in calorie intake remorse

The first wait staff was helpful enough, but after seating us just walked away, didn't explain how to order (it's all via the app now, but we saw menus before walking in, so clarification would have been nice), and no provision of water. I had to get up and walk to the counter to ask for water and glasses.

Despite showing a drinks menu including alcohol on the website, and wine glasses on display, they're not serving alcoholic drinks anymore.

And then to the main issue. We came here for dumplings, as they promote their signature collection. We had the pork xiao long bao and the shepherd's purse & pork wontons. They were just average. No real taste. No chilli oil provided or offered. You have to pay extra for grated ginger.
And the wontons barely had enough of the chilli/peanut sauce to cover the dumplings.

The potstickers were decent and the prawn toast is good. But if you're after tip top dumplings (especially light, flavoursome xiao long bao) with good service, I'd be heading straight to Mr Huang Jin.

Confirms the reason I avoid mall eateries.

QR code was not the approved one. Made a mistake in ticking the correct box, so am expecting offers and stuff in my email. Ordering was by app, seemed to work okay. Food was as expected nothing out of the ordinary. Good place for families as there were lots of small children enjoying themselves. Avoid Sunday lunchtime unless you have them or do not mind the noise they make.

Zero staff, zero service and disappointment all round.
This place has seriously gone downhill. The few wait staff on duty are rude and lacking service.
The food take forever to arrive and lacked taste.

Fast, efficient service - you can choose to order yourself via you phone. As usual it was very busy, with a line of people waiting for tables. Our food was very good - especially the ribs which were meaty and crispy.

Food was nice, especially the grilled buns. If the windows aren't fixed in place to provide a view that would be perfect.
