66Great art gallery, there is almost always has a feature artist or artists.which can be both moden and old. When you have seen the feature artist for the month/months. There are alot of artworks from different times and places.its a great place to go and look while your in the city:)
Even if you are not really into arts NGV is still worth visiting. Not to mention the entry is free.
Such a great place to visit. NGV never fails with whatever exhibits they have on for the public.
Can't go wrong for art lovers and the NGV so many different types of art and expression that there is a bit for everyone.
One of the best things to do in Melbourne, visiting from Sydney for a weekend and this was by far the highlight. Free entry and is just a great overall experience. The building and exhibits are excellent. Also went to the Museum but NGV exceeds that. Outside are the botanical gardens which is just a bonus and only adds to your day at the NGV. Will definitely visit next time i'm in Melbourne.
I just love this place from the Ark-like building design to the waterfall wall that greets you at the entrance, everything about it is world class.
These photos were taken at the Nendo and Eischer exhibition recently, a must see experience.
As always, I love going to the Gallery. We did the evening visit of Escher X Nendo. The Cafe was open and I had a tasty pulled pork roll and a white wine from one of the exhibition's sponsors. Higher price range wine but very nice. It was a a much more relaxed atmosphere in the evening. I had done the evening sessions before and can highly recommend it.
A must see is the Esher exhibition. It's world class, brillant display and massive. Expect 3 plus hrs to get through it. Go to bathroom before going into exhibit, because no exit and coming in again. Gallery is great with all exhibits. Food available, take plenty of money if shopping in the gallery. Expect crowds. Toilets on every floor.
Oh, we love the National Gallery of Victoria. Its such a buzz and bustle to go to. With so much on.the moment you walk in its like an influx of inspiration of sights and sounds.
Parking can be a bit of a stretch but that depends on the time and considering your in the city.
Thanks and see you soon.
Love the NGV but very dissappointed in the sexist stereotyping of a running woman currently on display out the front. Opie might be popular but that could also mean cliche. We can do better for public art for our impressionable young people walking by. It's neither thought provoking or clever. Just more body shaming and stereotyping. You have the platfom and voice. Let's feature art that educates and challenges not conforms and demeans women.
This is a fabulos place where you can view the role of Australia in world war I and II.
All the medals are setup beautifully.
Jst next to it is a botanical garden where you can find huge old trees and its beautiful.
Love the NGV. High quality seasonal exhibits, Friday nights is a lot of fun with a completely different atmosphere to the daytime. Also has an excellent free collection.
I would recommend going elsewhere for coffee and snacks though.
Lovely as always. I went with my work and the school teachers on the tour with us were amazing.
I always see so many things when I go on excursions, but not at the pace I'd like to see, so it always warrants a trip by myself to look a little longer and take in some of the exhibits.
We had lunch in a small garden outside with tables and chairs, filled with many species of succulents drenched in sunlight
Wonderful exhibitions that make Melbourne a must to visit. Beautifully and cleverly curated with many special tributes to design and culture within Australia.
Great place!
They have some free exhibitions and I can look around here and there are beautiful and awesome things!
Someone who visits in Melbourne, have to go there!
I took my 85yo grandma to the gallery. $35 to park underneath the building for an hour;
Then the lifts didn’t work. She was exhausted and we went home!
Must go. They always have so much going on. The exhibitions have been amazing. Especially the Dior and seeing the large skulls stacked up was impressive. Its usually free. Or I always pre purchase tickets. Its a lot faster getting in. Take a minimum half a day. The shop is well stocked
The Julian Opie exhibition is fun, with the 'fish shop window' a great site for his animated fish. The simplicity of his figures (hardly a nose to be seen) allows a focus on movement which is new to me.
Lovely to see Melbournians among his subjects.
The gravity of history stands respected upon the walls and amongst the halls, the air carrys that illusive scent to you and you're awed by the art. Truly a beautiful place to spend time, the coffee is excellent to. Can't wait for my next visit.
It puts me in mind of the places of sacred beauty we as a species would hold sacred, kept, protected for future generations to hopefully enjoy as we did.
It's hallowed ground in the real sense of the word.
Beautiful building - I was looking at the historical paintings and admiring the architecture, but noticed many people reading, studying and working there.
