Mai Jia

I had the Barramundi fillet and vegetable green curry. Generous-sized fillet, with green beans, broccoli, red onion, zucchini, capsicum and asked for a side serve of rice. Well cooked and delicious. Green curry is not overly spiced for my mild-loving palate.
Menu offers daily specials and covers gluten-free or other dietary needs, including vegan and vegetarian.

I asked about dessert as the menu is bare in this regard. Yes, if you ask, you get!
Out came a dish of special balls of banana fritters, honey syrup, vanilla ice cream with fresh fruit salad of strawberries, lychees, mandarin segments. Yum.

A cosy yet light and airy environment, that also has outdoor eating on the footpath. And is dog-friendly!

They have a new customer! As a walk-in, I was treated in a most friendly and helpful manner by all the staff.

*edit* two years after my original review - I ate at Mai Jia again recently. The food was delicious, but I also want to emphasise how delightful and accommodating the staff are. A really friendly place (even when they're busy).

I’ve eaten at Mai Jai a few times now and every time I’ve loved it. Laksas are beautiful and would say my favourite in Melbourne. Service with a smile everytime, so happy they are close by!

Came in close to closing and they were very accommodating for us even past close unlink a few restaurants nearby. Food was really good. The seafood laksa was creamy and packed with seafood and the chicken rice chicken was juicy and tender. The lady who served us was a joy and looked after us. Will definitely come again when we're in the area!

Cheap cocktails - but beware, if it’s a busy day, you may get your food before you get your cocktails.

Service was painfully slowwwww - it was a moderately busy day (the restaurant seemed to be at 50% capacity). Perhaps they were understaffed.
In any case, it was a long wait for food and even longer for drinks. Plus when I did get my cocktail - it was the wrong one - I was so fed up waiting though - I just took it. The wait staff were apologetic and did offer to change it for me, but I didn’t want to wait another 1/2 hr for a drink. (They didn’t offer to compensate for the inconvenience)

I’d definitely go here again, since the food was great.
But I’ll have to be prepared to wait for a while for my food.

The hidden gem of South Yarra. This place is an absolute must when in the area and seeking Asian cuisine. I have eaten here several times and all dishes I’ve tried have been a stand out. On top of this, they have the friendliest customer service and are BYO. Win win

Fantastic service and everything was done brilliantly - from the cocktails to the appetisers to the mains. One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a while.

I visited Mai Jia with a group of people last Sunday around 9pm. Their customer service was friendly. Food was delicious. The overall ambience was cosy and relaxing, which I needed it. There was many menu options. I would like to re-visit and try other menus as well. I am so glad to find about this place!

Walking past, we decided to go in. So happy that staff made room for us for a fully booked night. My wife had Laksa fish cake and fish bowl and was amazing as she broth first as it was “prefect balanced”. I really enjoyed and didn’t want to end the Honey Pepper chicken that outside crunch was amazing. Along with the cocktails we really appreciate and enjoyed the night and will be back. Thank you soo much for a great night and fitting us in last min.

My favourite restaurant, beautiful, fresh and tasty Malaysian food. Run by a family of lovely, professional women. Large menu, immaculate service and very reasonable for Sth Yarra. Consistently great.

Love the food here - super tasty! I sometimes go for lunch with my work friends who also love it and often buy takeaway for my family. We think it's the best takeaway we've had. Great quality, delicious and great portions. The Special Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage and great Singapore Noodles. Get the homemade chilli oil.

Singaporean noodles were the best I have tried so far. Highly recommend the Jasmine tea cocktail.

Tasty food, plenty selections for varied palettes, good portions, reasonable prices and we were served quick.

Absolutely fabulous food and wine, loved it so much so we went two nights in a row. Highly recommend the Beef Rendang and the Char Keow Teow

Cherrie, Raff and Rach are the sweetest family! Hands down the best laksa in South Yarra. They’re friendly, loving and always welcoming their customers. The food is hearty and tasty! We usually order Uber eats and we love to exchange love notes! Hehe

Been out of the area for years and the first place we wanted to eat was Mai Jai. Once again didn't disappoint. Excellent food with a great variety and good price. The staff are super friendly and obliging, even remembered our favourite meal from years ago. Great to be
back, can't recommend here enough.
