The Beef Rendang with Dry Noodle is seriously amazing.

I FIFO to and from Melb for work and make a ritual of stopping by for their rendang every time I'm in the city.

Do yourself a favour and order one, you won't regret it.

Had the honey pepper chicken on rice, chili wontons, and roast duck roti for $40 on Saturday lunchtime. Not sure why it has 4.7 stars. Staff were nice tho.

-they served the honey pepper chicken on rice 5 mins after ordering. Then the roast duck roti when we were done eating the chicken rice. Then waited 20 more mins for the chili wontons?
-honey pepper chicken rice was good.
-roast duck roti was terrible. Roti and the single slice of duck was not fresh. Definitely came from dinner service the evening before.
-waited so long for chili wontons that were overcooked (soggy dough/wrapper). Flavorless and just drenched in watery chili oil.

Excellent Malaysian food, and thrilled to be able to have GF dumplings and the most delicious chicken satay (instead of watching everyone else). Very friendly staff. Thanks so much!

Had dinner here around 8pm and brought 9 people. After 30mins, the table was ready.
Had 2 portion of dumplings and 1 drink as complimentary.
Great service. Great food.
The taste is different to Malaysian cuisines I've tasted before in a good way.

Absolutely delicious. Might seem a bit pricey but the portions are large. Highly recommend the creamy butter fried chicken.

What a find! Authentic Malaysian food so full of yum. Only in Melbourne for 10 days but managed 2 meals at Mai Jia

Mai Jia consistently performs. Standouts include Laksa, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Beef Rendang and dry noodles. Chicken satay's are not to miss. Hor Fun and Kuay Teow noodles are worth mentioning. I like that Mai Jia have a good selection on their menu.
Layout is quite narrow and think the venue could benefit with a different layout.
Great service, friendly staff and always accommodating.

I would travel here just to have their duck laksa again. It is such a generous serve, but I seemed to have all the space to fit the delicious broth and noodles! The duck was crisp on the outside and succulent when you bit into each piece. The laksa curry itself was a star of its own.so flavoursome and the coconut didnt overpower all the beautiful flavours! I wish I didn't live so far away. I'm still dreaming of this dish alone.

Were looking for Malaysian food around, and stumbled upon this restaurant. The food is superb, it almost as authentic as what can be found in Malaysia. Ordered assam laksa, was surprise and blown away by the taste.

I had the chicken Laksa, not my taste.
I didn’t like what it appears to be some spring roll skin deep fried, it was just condensed grease. I did enjoy the fried shallots, and the snow peas was a nice touch. Chicken, vermicelli, Hokkien noodles, all fine. The issue is, the soup. It was really thin, watery. It tastes better when it has a rich, creamy broth. More coconut milk would be better. More Laksa paste. What I found utterly disappointing above all was that the soup was sweet. Watery, sugary, that’s my impression.

The price was $18.90. South Yarra rent. Fine.

Service was fast and good.

Although Laksa was disappointing, I’ll give the Beef Rendang and the Nasi Goreng a shot next time.

Superb. The seafood laska and beef randang were delicious.
The hostess was bright, friendly and made the night.
Thankyou. We will be back.

You cannot fault the laksa here. It's so flavorful, the serving is massive, and it's so lovingly presented. The service is always friendly and helpful (though can be a bit slow as they're usually busy). Top tip: get the spicy wontons, which are swimming in their delicious house-made chili oil, and drizzle that oil on your laksa. So delicious.

The Poseidon with the added fried eggplant is the tastiest seafood laksa I’ve had in years. The cocktails were great as was the Lychee fizz soft drink. They really put heart and soul into both their food and their drinks. Can’t recommend enough. This will be a regular.

Went there last Friday night 21th of Oct for dinner with group of friends.
I ordered Seafood Laksa and coconut prawns with a Lobak as the starter.
Lobak and coco prawns were almost perfect.
The disappointment was with Laksa.
I asked for mild Laksa and it was a bit tasteless.
Overall was very nice night and I will go back as I tried their Laksa before and last time was perfect.

Amazing food and lovely service! Really small and intimate place, ideal for a "sorry I slept with your housemate" dinner. It's not guaranteed to get you out of trouble, but it certainly can't make things worse

Long overdue review of this terrific family-run restaurant! Every dish we have tried over the last 2+ years has been delicious and prices are reasonable with good portion sizes

The people who work there are some of the hardest working, lovely people in South Yarra hospitality, but the food was not good at all, and more expensive than other similar restaurants in the area.

I had the vegetarian laksa, it was excellent. Not sure why people go to that other place in Flemington.

It has been said that in this world there are two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it. If you are not hindered by a diet, often the deplorable curtailment of the joy of life, any excuse to eat Malaysian food at Mai Jia is a good one The heart and soul of Malaysian food is in the daily dishes that you find on the streets and which are eaten by everyone and Mai Jia does a great job of recreating these exotic flavours.
