The last time I had Indonesian food was when I visited Candi Dasa, Indonesia, in 2019. When I was there, I had a mind-blowing, simply-made fried duck dish called Bebek Goreng; succulent, clean, extraordinarily spiced. I have not forgotten about it.

Where I live, surprisingly, there are no Indonesian restaurants, so visiting Melbourne, I jumped at the chance to go to Kenangan. Simple setting and QR code menu aside, I was there for the Bebek Goreng Kremes. What is served is the thigh quarter of the duck, perfectly fried to render the fat and a crunchy topping, a heap of steamed rice, and a spicy sambal.

You know when the food is so good you laugh? I did that. By myself. Eating at the counter in the window with 2 Bintang beers, I giggled through my meal. The food filled me and brought me happiness. This, ultimately, should be the goal of all restaurants.

Omg Beef so tender and crispy in same time! I loved it! Good price with reasonable price. Friendly staff with vintage atmosphere. Definitely come back again:)

Came for the chicken stir fry with chicken skin as it is my favourite. Drove 45 mins from home into the city 4 days ago and ordered take away for dinner. Took out my food to warm and realised there is no chicken skin at all which was the only reason I ordered this dish and I had double checked with the crew member and told him I wanted the one with the chicken skin and he also triple checked with me if it's the crispy one or soft one and I said soft and he knew which one. If I knew there was none I would have ordered something else but that was my main reason for getting this dish as the last time I ordered this dish I had recieved something else completely different. Your dishes are great though and are tasty but I felt slightly dissapointed this last time

Really enjoyed my lunch at Kenangan
- had their gado-gado & mie goreng Kenangan with tahu Tempe goreng kremes on the side and es CapCin. Tahu tempe were deliciously crispy, mie goreng was so flavourful and so was the gado-gado although it was way too spicy for me and the sauce was too watery. Cappuccino w grass jelly was so refreshing also. Service was friendly and prompt.

4.4/5
Delicious and good values as well!
Iga bakar kecap is good but wish it would be more tender. The nasi goreng was a little too salty but they were very accommodating and made us a new one. The crispy chicken was cooked to perfect crisp.

ORDERED:
Ayam Bakar Kecap: 1/4 Grilled chicken with sweet & savoury sauce served with steam rice and your choice of sambal ($16.20)
(Sambal Terasi: spicy as)
?   Es Kelapa: Iced coconut drink with coconut bits ($7.00)

I spent $23.55 here.

REVIEW:
A lean, mean, fighting machine, Kenangan is a force to be reckoned with. When your food out comes hot, flavoured and delicious in under 10 minutes, it's a new personal best in my books. ️
The grilled chicken is marinated so wonderfully and memorably juicy. When the chicken meat easily pulls away from the bone with your fork you know it's perfectly cooked. The little rice crackers are cute, while the two chunks of cucumber keeps it refreshing and light. Servings are a great size too.
Beware of the sambal terasi! It was too spicy for me, so I'm definitely going to order something more milder next time.

Coconut drink was great and real refreshing to sip on. I had little sips in the beginning, but leaving it till after the meal was a bad idea. Your mouth has hit all the savoury tones, so the coconut drink lost all its subtle flavour and sweetness. It was too similar to water.

Service is straightforward. Line up at the counter where they ask you if you're eating in/ takeaway and you can choose to eat on the big communal table or outside.
I did see a reservation sign, so I think you can book! However, I'd say 98% of patrons were just walk in. With service this efficient, walk in is definitely fine?

Sedap! Need smaller tables indoors. Need to expand. Beautiful and authentic Indonesian food.

We tried the fried fish, grilled fish and the beef ribs. Great flavours all round and the sambals were spot on too. My only gripe is that they gave one measly piece of cucumber with the fish dishes. Some pickles and more veg would have rounded out the meal much better.

Love this place. Have recommended it to friends, family, and colleagues. Took them there too and everyone like it. All their food sends me back home. Their iga goreng is to die for, huge and daaang good!

Do yourself a favour, order the Nasi Bali. It was really to die for! Take this advise from a self-proclaimed Indonesian food expert: D

Authentic Indonesian Restaurant right in the corner of Queen Victoria Market, just next to tram stop. Many dishes from Bali. All the food we order are very delicious and bring back the nice memory of Paradise destination Bali. Will coming back to try other dishes

I’m one of the loyal customers. The food are 10/10. Service and friendly staff 10/10.

I’m so glad that they finally open full day. But I wish they have new menu or special regularly:)

Surreal experience in Kenangan, as someone born and raised in Indonesia I strongly believe that Kenangan is way ahead of its competitors, great hygiene, atmosphere, service, and last but not least incredible food!

I had bebek kremes with sambal goreng and its bomb, the meat are soft but the skin are dry and crispy. Perfect temperature and its got a nice flavour, not too salty or bland.

The sambal again its a really mild tasting one, great for those who cant handle spices especially Indonesian sambal.

I didn't try any coffee here for now but next time I'll definitely come back to try it.

Very solid 10/10!

Delicious! Eating out with my friends and got me some Grilled Ribs that fell off the bone on every bite I took! Juicy all the way through and tastes just like how you want BBQ to be on the weekend. Like how this place does not get busy so there is plenty of sitting spaces. Definitely coming back here again and I highly recommend eating here

This place is a culinary delight. We tried the grilled chicken with rice (had sambal, jimbaran sauce, salad) and a similar platter with fried beef ribs and Off-course Teh Kotak (jasmine tea, here in a cold tetra pack) which was just what we needed to wash down with. I love their food, fresh, great quantity, and all the amazing texture and flavour. Beef rib was falling off with all the good fat and juicy meat. The chicken was well marinated and juicy too. It can get busy, but their food is worth the wait.

Some of the best ever Indonesian food I've had! (Even better than places I've been to in Jakarta and Bali)

Delicious food and giant portions at a very reasonable price. Super friendly staff and fantastic service. Food arrived in minutes even though it was a full house. Limited indoor seating with a few tables outside.

Ordered the ayam bakar Jimbaran and tahu tempe goreng. Both were incredible, especially the ayam bakar. Can't wait to try more of the menu.

The Indonesian music is also a nice touch. "Home is where the heart is. Kenangan - Bringing Indonesia Home" was on the wall, and it most certainly feels like it
