Holgate Brewhouse

Service was average for young staff gaining experience, however the meal was a sad experience. Ordered the 200g Angus beef burger (gfo). The meat was TOUGH, DRY and over cooked, the bun should have been toasted at least on one side to freshen it up, the lettuce leaves came out with a brown frilly edge…. It had the appearance of being slapped together very quickly. Considering one has to go gf this meal makes me wonder are the burgers at “Hungary Jacks better? ! ……” good luck to those who want to keep their teeth.

I’ve been to a considerable amount of breweries over the years and can confidently say Holgate is up there as one of the best, me and my friends went on New Year’s Day and weren’t charged a surcharge regardless of it being a public holiday which was a pleasant surprise, the place was packed but the food/drink orders were taken and served promptly, and I ordered a braised lamb Gnocci and it was accidentally processed as the other lamb dish on the menu, and was told I could keep both for the hassle which I found incredible impressive as a result of the professionalism shown by the staff and the promptness of the dish I actually ordered coming out 5-10 minutes later, will definitely be coming back to Holgate and recommending it to anyone heading to Country Victoria!

My recommendations are definitely the Chargrilled Lamb Tenderloins (even though this wasn’t the dish we originally ordered) I’d come back for this alone! And if you like German beers the Hefe was absolutely fantastic and one of the best I’ve had in Australia, also the paddle of 8 beers was only $20 which is a steal and very rare that you get more than 4-6 beers to a paddle!

So expensive for the little portions.
Beers are ok but really nothing doesn’t worth the prices neither quality or portion size.

It’s not bad but definitely not your ~$30 burger

The place it self was amzing especially inside. The food was amazing couldn't really fault it just one thing was the choice of cut for the param never in my have I ever been served a parma with a bone in. Some more training om making mixed drink I think is needed too. Other than that great seating and perfect for big groups

Nice enough to come for a few beers and friendly staff. The food was not good. We ordered a few different dishes and did not get a single good one. Stay away from the chicken wings - the sauce is the same as eating melted sugar on meat.

Unfortunately our nice little Sunday outing as a family wasn’t as pleasant as we hoped.
Although the food was pub standard nice, although the chips were soft and not crunchy and the meals didn’t come out hot.

We were quite let down by the service we had asked for a highchair for our 11 month old baby. And we’re told originally yes. To then being told no.
I asked the person in charge if by any chance any come available (as I noticed some were at tables not being used) please to let us know so we can use one. He said he would as he started to walk away and it seemed not to care about making our baby comfortable. I then noticed he no longer gave us eye contact or was friendly and we had to have our meals with our baby on our laps as No highchair in the end.

Before sitting us down it would have been nice to know that suppling a high chair isn’t important on their agenda so we would have found somewhere else to go for our lunch.

Unfortunately not accomodating our baby and ourselves we had to rush eat and didn’t get the nice afternoon we were hoping for.
We will not be coming back.

Great place to stop in for a hand pumped traditional ale (one of the few places around that keeps my English friends happy)

They do not take CASH.lost another few sales when my family and friends wanted a meal and a few drinks

Have to agree with Tim Tim. Very unsatisfactory experience for our group. Won't be going there again.

Stayed in the accommodation, the room is tired and needs a refurb, I understand it's an old building but that doesn't excuse flaking paint and missing grout in the bathroom.no plug sockets in the bed side tables.continental breakfast you eat in your room. Bed was ok for comfort, staff are great.for the money the accommodation is a let down. Pub is great.

Grabbed some lunch here recently and ordered the Mediterranean Spiced Slow Cooked Lamb in Turkish Bread with Chips and the Fish and Chips (as they had sold out of the Humpty Doo Barramundi and not told us when handing us the menus).
The Lamb dish was not quite what we expected it to taste like but that said they were both delicious and as a side note, the chips were awesome!

The staff here were helpful but I would not say friendly. It was clear that they were busy trying to take drink and meal orders while also checking people in to their accomodation but this should be something to be celebrated in this current climate. We understand that they may have been short staffed but this ‘vibe’ clearly fed through the team and then through to the clientele as most people were eating and leaving quickly.

Definitely would not say this was a fun dining experience. May try it again another time when it’s not so busy.

Excellent lunch in a side room for family of 12 and not rushed to leave. Very enjoyable and food today was perfect

Lucky today was a fine day and many patrons sat outside. Inside was really noisy, the food not quite average and at 2.30pm were told not making coffees. V poor effort and would not return.

Great local pub, with a great dark beer selection and the best hot chips in Woodend… Don’t forget the aioli. Falafel burger for veg option is great.

Over the past few years we have booked a table about 3 times a year.
We have always had a pleasant experience and the food and service good, except for this weekend.
Steak sandwiches, at our table, we’re below standard and the meat being described as Sirloin was full of grizzle and couldn’t be cut with the knives supplied. This was the same with both SS, s at our table and they’re not cheap at $27.
The 4th meal on the table was 15 minutes late to be served and the Coq au vin was tough and rubbery.
Disappointing for a birthday lunch.
Service by table staff and beer is still good though but the kitchen has got to get their ingredients and service back up to scratch. ️

Went here for lunch. Absolutely DISGUSTED in all the meals. Duo of dips was with toast yes toast instead of Turkish bread. Steak was full of gristle. Falafal was nice but on an uncooked stale bun. Entree came out with our main meals. WILL NOT BE RETURNING OR RECOMMENDING THIS PLACE EVER.

Service was non-existent as we had to do everything except bring the food and clear the table. Food was average, Pappardelle was not bad but hardly any Duck in it. Coq au vin was just chicken with a so-called Coq au vin sauce, the chicken was not Marinated in red wine, and was on the borderline of not being cooked properly. The Parma was average, kids meal ok. I have had better meals and service for the meals of the same Prices.

Great beers and atmosphere. Food is average. My partner had the salmon and it was over cooked and tasteless. The Angus burger was ok

It’s our regular kid free get away.
Beer is great, and venue is really lovely.
Rooms are comfortable and although meals aren’t gourmet, they’re really delicious.
Room, beer tasting paddle & three course dinner all included in the package. Always really enjoy our stay here. Macedon ranges make for a great little car trip too, some pretty places and cute, historic towns.
