Hector's Deli reviews
59You Guys are cashless, so first and last time l will be visiting.l do not care how good your food is (
They refused to accept cash. Awful experience for a small business that apparently wants to succeed. Might seem fine pushing the agenda now Hector, but in time you will see what tyranny you enable once the UN's robot dogs chase you down for eating too much steak or having a bad social credit rating in 2030 thanks to the oh mighty digital everything
Hector's Deli in Melbourne is the spot for an incredible tuna melt. It's definitely worth a visit. Plus, their flat white is exceptional. I can't wait to return!
Cool place, good coffee, good sandwiches, good suburb (close to Abbotsford Convent), good service. Can't complain 5/5
These sandwiches are out of this world. Every bite was Heaven. Ask for the hectic sauce and cheese with your beef and pickle sandwich.
Local of the area for the last 8 years and I always resist coming here because it’s always super busy. You really have to justify the wait for the tasty sandwich. I suggest coming here as early as possible but anytime after 12, good luck.
Brilliant coffee! Despite the focus on sammiches, this place makes seriously incredible coffee.
Yummy! The Aussie version of NYC’s Katz’s Deli. Three of us shared the very yummy Beef & Pickles and Tuna Melt and a couple of Maple Iced Doughnuts, that melted in our mouths. This is a definite ‘go to’ lunch. Be prepared to stand, wait and sit on milk crates, if available, or find a nearby park to enjoy the delicious food.
The tastiest sandwiches we have ever had! It’s worth the wait! We will be back again for more.
Delicious food! Staff are all very lovely and welcoming! Super fast service with care. Will definitely be coming back.
Absolutely furious and devastated in equal parts. I ordered 2 eggplant and 1 chicken sandwich last night to share with my parents visiting from Ireland. We planned the whole day around getting lunch. My husband turned up to collect them at the specified time and was simply told, no eggplant. No explanation. We had been waiting all day and there was ample time to tell me but we heard nothing. What makes it worse is, I actually was in the Moor Street branch this morning and could have bought them there but assumed my order was fine given it went through no problem last night. I'm so upset and disappointed with the customer service. To not offer any explanation and not tell me before now is really unusual. I feel like I can't trust the ordering system now at all. Open disclosure, we did get a full refund for our sandwiches but it took my husband asking for this. In reality, it should have been offered but overall, we would have been much happier with our sandwiches. Sad day.
Went to the Fitzroy store and overall had a good experience.
We tried the beef & pickles toastie and the fried chicken sandwich.
The fried chicken sandwich was good, but the potato bun just isn't for me. It's just a little too soft and dense and chewy. The beef and pickles toastie on the other hand - incredible.
You wont be disappointed by any menu item here, but if you want breakfast, the egg cheese and sausage is mind blowing.
Really delish, wish we were able to get a seat but there's a reason it's so popular!
Sensational! The most delicious toastie I've eaten yet! Beef and pickle toastie with Hektor sauce was buttered, crunchy, filled with a perfect blend of thinly sliced beef, sourness of the pickles/chutney/jam, the sauce was amazing and tied the ingredients together bringing moisture and more taste to the mix- with the lovely fragrance of dill. Could be the same sauce used in the tuna melt. The tuna melt was also described as yummy.
The cold brew was a little bitter, but that's ok. Provides a flavour kick to wake you up.
My friend George absolutely loved his sandwich, and he let me hold it briefly – photo attached – before he started eating, hunched over and facing the brick wall of the lane. In between mouthfuls and still facing the wrong way he started talking about the floppy chicken, the tiny mushy bun and the culture of great American diners which spread out over the plains, all metal bathroom sinks, vinyl chairs and wiping your hands on your jeans. He says he has never been to America but has always wanted to go, and though I can't quite understand him I chance a look up from the lettuce at his feet towards the side of his mouth, which is now so burdened by mayonnaise that it seems to have its own dialect, and as my eyes lose their focus I look past him, past the lane itself, past the state of my own tuna melt and into a future where the new deli has taken over and we all huddle around milk crates to speak this language of wet vowels and open mouths, all tongues and napkins half soiled and lying unopen on the ground.
George has used up his napkin and hasn't even reached the bun
ORDERED:
? Chicken: Crumbed chicken schnitzel, tarragon butter, iceberg lettuce & house-made pickle mayo on a steamed potato bun ($16.50)
? Tuna Melt: House tuna mix, pickled green chilli, fresh white onion and melted American cheese on light rye ($16.00)
REVIEW:
This is the best fried chicken I've ever had. Generously crumbed chicken, which is juicy in every bite. It's absolutely unreal and a testament to their skill that they're able to craft such magic. Considering the soft bun takes up a reasonably small portion of the schnitzel, it seems like a roller coaster where you build up the flavour with the perfectly salted chicken, work through the delicious sandwich itself, and then come back down to normalcy. An extremely delicious journey.
Would highly recommend this sandwich.it's also one of their iconic sandwiches!
Tuna melt in comparison was pretty decent. The rye was soft, and glad I could add some variety to the Hector's experience.
They do incredible toasted sandwiches.
Although there's tables outside, it's pretty bare bones. Not wiped down (so bring your own sanitizing wipes!) and no tap water service.you can also buy your own beverage with the order. It's a communal table so if you're not a fan of a skeleton of a dine in service, head to the bigger joint at South Melbourne instead.
Got mushroom, tuna melt and beef n pickles. Mushrooms was overpowered with seeded mustard which was a shame. Tuna melt was pretty good and beef with pretty good. The downside with the bread, extremely stale bread, main reason would be seeing a tub full of pre made toasties sitting out. The bread was so over cooked it cut my mouth and made them very hard to eat. Also got a cookie and doughnut, cookie was like cardboard and the doughnut was pretty good.
Have had amazing sandwiches here and at the south Melb shop many times but last week went for lunch and the chicken sandwich was a completely different standard - the bun was stale and chewy, barely any lettuce, chicken was falling apart. Im usually such a fan so hopefully this is a temporary thing.
Always a line but worth the wait. Coffee is good just the icing on the cake. Based on the pics I got a beef + pickles sandwich and a chicken burger. They were the best I’ve ever had out. I couldn’t take the time to get a photo of them. Highly recommend.
