Hawker Chan reviews
51While I can understand the hype about the Michelin star and the secret soy sauce, I'm not a fan of the overall experience. The noisy ambience and the sound when each token is updated in the display don't help. The wait for your food after ordering (it's all self service) is awkward esp if you're eating alone - do you sit down or do you wait by the counter as staff try to rush past you? Worth a try if you're curious.
Good food cheaply and efficiently delivered. However, I fail to see how it is Michelin star winning. I think a lot of food stores in Singapore and Malaysia sell similar quality food.
The raved about soy chicken was very nice and is well worth eating, i had it with the egg noodle, and loved every bit of it.
The pork ribs were over sauced and i did not enjoy it at all. The roast pork was well made and very crispy. The tofu was very nice and crispy, but did not enjoy the sweet chilli.
All dishes at the restaurant are well priced, but to ensure you are full make sure you have a side!
Soy sauce chicken was tender and flavorful, but the rice was a disappointment. Better to go with the rice noodles (my preferred option, this is cooked very well) or the egg noodles. Roast pork and the pork ribs are just so-so, good accompaniments, but the star is definitely the chicken. Price is cheap but portions are considered small for Melbourne standards.
Servings are very small, prices are cheap but doesn't count for anything because I had to order 2 dishes to be anywhere near full. China Bar level food, and thats not a good standard to be measured against.
The noodles were good. But it tastes only like sweeten soy sauce. I was hoping for Hong Kong style so in that sense I was very disappointed. The flavors had nothing there. The BBQ pork on the other hand was good. The portion is small. I wouldn't mind if it tasted good.
It may be Michelin starred, but despite the hype, the food was surprisingly bland. Compared to what I know of traditional hawker style soya sauce chicken and roast pork rice - the chicken was dry and lacked any flavour, the pork cut was stingy, and all the traditional sauces (spring onion ginger oil, etc) all were missing. I was left with a well prepared but dry and bland meal. I think it is not unreasonable to expect better.
Three tiny pieces of chicken, too dry and too salty. Extra $2 to choose noodles over rice. Loud bell constantly ringing. Wasn't worth the effort to visit.
I heard great things about Hawker Chan and the 'Singapore experience'. Definitely worth going to check it out and try the food but I'd prefer to go back to Singapore and get the real thing
If you can't get the opportunity to go to Singapore then Hawker Chan will give you a taste.
Good but the queue is long. If you’re really hungry, grab a burger first because it can be a long wait. Their service is fast but you would still have to wait.
Food is good but not consistent. Today I ordered charsiew and every single piece of my charsiew was 80% fat. In the end I didn't have much edible bits. Disappointed today.
