62 Great service by the team.
Had a special occasion for my Mum’s Birthday.
Food & drinks delicious
Service was excellent overall except from the grumpy old man. Way to ruin the experience with his rudeness and poor waitering. Time to retire!
Tried to make a reservation and encountered their super rude and dismissive staff who answered the phone. Maybe consider learning some phone etiquette?
Loved the ambience and the staff. Authentic and genuine. Been there twice as a walk in and they always managed to arrange a table for me. Scallops and steak were very tasty and the wine selection is incredible. Merci:)
My favourite French restaurant in Melbourne.
Great vibe- constantly busy, loud and exuberant bistro atmosphere.
Friendly and cheeky waitstaff who are great at their jobs.
Oh, the food- wonderful snails, steak tartare and steak entrecôte.
Whats is not to like? BYO for Sunday lunch a huge plus.
France Soir is a Melbourne institution and long may it last (35 years that Ive known it).
Simply a great experience and great food.
Had the rabbit and escargot, which were very delightful. They also serve you a side of bread with butter for complimentary.
Definitely not worth the hype.
Atmosphere is ostensibly authentic, staff attitude is also reminiscent of Parisian hospitality.
The food was a different story. Far from fresh in the seafood and beef department, steak came rare contrary to our order. Of the 7 dishes we ordered I don’t think we were satisfied hence able to complete 1 in full. Staff were not observant of our reproach and instead sought to drink behind the bar during a busy service, which I’d usually be all for were they more attentive.
Ordered 2 undrinkable martinis, neither made to the order requested and both astringent and raw in flavour, questionable spirit selection.
All in all very disappointed with this supposed institution of Melbourne, at least we got a laugh out of it as part of our birthday celebrations.
Maybe we came on a bad night, unfortunately I see no reason to try again.
Amazing French cuisine with top quality service from the wait staff. Can't wait to return in future.
Got so sick from the food here it's not funny! Have never had such an experience after dining out and never want to again! Oh&s check needed
Very ordinary food and service, waiters ask for tips and almost harass you for them never again!
STAY AWAY there are better French Restaurants in Melbourne
Had a fantastic birthday night here tonight. Excellent food, excellent service and excellent rendition of Happy Birthday! Thank you guys, we had a great night.
Got severe food poisoning after eating here tonight and really feel the need to warn others. The food is very poor, less than you would expect at a cheap pub and honestly the sickest i have felt in my life after dining out.
I tried to book for a table. First call, the person on the phone was actually quite nice and explained that they had some time slots available, but I was going to check with my friend first and she said it's fine. Called again and what seems to be another person picked up the phone and said they're fully booked when I asked to book the exact time slot they said was available 5 minutes ago. Called the third time and this time it got disconnected without any explanation.
I understand if you're busy, but at least please let me know if there's no table instead of giving misleading information and not even picking up my call after that.
First time at the restaurant. Food absolutely amazing (I had the steak au poivre) and we had a few other steaks, scallops, tuna tartare. Everything was amazing, staff were awesome and it was a great experience. Yes it is pricey but it is in iconic Melbourne restaurant and the food is great. Awesome dining experience.
The food was amazing, but the real stars are the waiters. Such immaculate service from all the waiters, and particularly the head waiter Ashley. Quick, attentive, at your every beck and call, lots of good banter and jokes with them all. French waiters really are the best in the world. Leave them a tip they work hard and deserve it.
Unfortunately, one of the waiters who served our table did not know our table could understand French which is fine. But we could hear some rude comments from the waiter towards us spoken in French. It could be sarcasm but surely not to the customers. When one of us confronted the waiter in French, we could see the waiter was embarrassed and wasn’t aware that we understood his comments. If the waiter approached to us in a nice and funny way, it could have been fine although his comments were rude. But this wasn’t the case. So we won’t go back to the restaurant because we don’t feel comfortable to be served by the waiter.
Also, we booked a table for four people in three weeks advance. Maybe how early we made the booking didn’t matter to the restaurant. But we had to sit around a tiny table right next to the kitchen entrance. The kitchen door hit one of our seats every time the waiters walked in/out. None of us could move freely. It was very uncomfortable. So voila! What a disappointing experience and what a shame for a restaurant like France-Soir.
Was so excited to join the long queue and try the Sunday lobster roll. Purchased the meal with fries and a Bloody Mary for myself and the meal with fries and champagne for my partner. I was hoping for buttery deliciousness with pure lobster flavor but what I got was just meh. Pulled out a piece of lobster to try on its own and it was tough. The Bloody Mary was good but very weak (couldn’t have been a full shot of vodka.) The fries were delicious, though! Overall, at $110+, I was quite disappointed.
Great experience.
The entrees are outrageously good.
Share a big 600g steak for main was good but a bit fatty.
Wines are some of the best selections I've seen and tasted and staff knowledge is great.
Wonderful, interesting French fare with a calm atmosphere. The meal took a bit longer than we expected, but there's no rushing the delicious.
Service was bad: had to remind the waiter to bring water, food didn't arrive all at the same time as requested. Different parts of the dish came at seperate times. Bistro Gitan is a far better restaurant.
