Eat Fish reviews
64 Used to be the best around, but new owners now. The salads are not as fresh. I had a beetroot salad, fully expecting nuts and fetta and rocket like it used to be, but it was tinned beetroot and rocket and fetta.
The fish pieces are smaller. The chips aren't as good.
Eatfish is located at the heart of Ashburton. The location is pretty strategic. We love their breadcrumb salmon paired with steamed vegetables and prawn skewers. They are fresh and flavourful. We also had their calamari rings and battered fish and chips.
If you happened to be in the area or craving for an amazing fish and chips, give this venue a visit.

We visited @eatfishashburton and they have such an amazing selection of seafood. What I love about @eatfishashburton you get to see and choose what you order. They have several fresh salad options and I love that they have a gluten free section.
They have all the traditional fish and chips options too.
Definitely check out @eatfishashburton
We had the following
Grilled Salmon
Grilled Barramundi
Mixed Veggies
Brown Rice
Beetroot Salad
Coleslaw
Fish Cake
Grilled Crumbed Salmon
Sweet Potato Fries
Grilled Flathead
Prawn skewers in sweet chilli & garlic
There’s heaps of variety of fresh fish to pick from and you get to customise however you want it! Grilled or fried you choose ️ would highly recommend their crumbed salmon! It’s so flavourful and cooked perfectly
I was soo impressed with this place! Such high quality and super fresh seafood!
This is the first fish n chip shop that I've been to that also sells fresh seafood - almost felt like I was at a fish market!
For lunch we ordered:
Battered Oyster, $2.00
Bass Strait Scallop, $2.80
Grilled Squid with ginger & garlic sauce, $9.90
Prawn Skewers with herb & garlic sauce, $8.90
Sweet Potato fries, $6.50
Fried flathead fish, $11.90
I've always ordered rockling or King George whiting fish when I get fish n chips, but the staff at Eat Fish Ashburton suggested to try Flathead and wow - its so tasty The meat is so soft, fresh and meaty! The batter is soo light yet crispy and not oily at all. The grilled squid not only was it such a generous size but also grilled perfectly so it's tender and tasty! The grilled prawns were also a winner, super juicy and tasty! Love how you can select the type of marinade sauce to go with the grilled seafood, so light and flavourful.
Both scallop and oysters were also very fresh and fried perfectly – I am so impressed with their light batter yet maintain the original seafood flavour! The sweet potato fries were amazing! Soft and fluffy inside and crunchy outside.
Terrible fish chips oily, no flavour, overpriced, was great fish chips the old owners iv deleted there no fro my phone the cat liked it I couldn’t eat it
WOW Great fish and chips! All very fresh and good portions. The fish and the chips were not greasy at all. WELL DONE TO YOU, we will definitely be back and we will try other options they all looked so good. Looking forward to next time. Thank you
Eat fish Ashbourton is a well known fish and chips joint that has been popping up all over my social media so I couldn’t wait to give it a try. The shop sells a wide range of fresh seafood that you can either take home or eat there.
I chose the two below dishes and found them both to be so yum, especially the wrap. The cocktail sauce was what differentiated it from everything else! The seafood here was fresh and cooked perfectly. I love how the fish batter was crispy, thin and not oily at all. For those after a healthier meal, there is a grilled option. You can also opt for either veggies, salad and rice instead of the classic chips.
Fishermans Basket
Crispy Fish Wrap
Not recommended following change of ownership - quality and size of fish is average. Poor service (got my order wrong despite repeating it back and it being printed on their own delivery docket). See photos. Plenty of other take away options around for you.

This fish and chip shop has fresh and a wide range of fish and seafoods. Fish can be bought fresh or be cooked in store with indoor and outdoor seating.
Eatfish for 2 - this pack came with a beer crispy battered chips, 2 potato cakes and 2 dim Sims and 2 fish of the days. We picked the barramundi which had a buttery meaty texture and the snapper which had the most non fishy, sweet and tender taste. The batter was somewhat crispy yet dense.
Salt and pepper squid was lightly battered and was so tender.
I loved so crispy and flavoured the sweet potato fries were.
Best fish and chips in town! This fish and chip shop has a fresh and wide variety of fish and seafood. You can buy fresh seafood or get it cooked in the store with a decent amount of seating.
We had Grilled Salmon, Grilled Prawns, Salt & Pepper Squid, Potato Chips, Sweet Potato Fries and Greek Salad.
Everything was made fresh and tasted amazing. The Salmon was perfectly cooked and the Prawns were yummy. Squids were tender and juicy!
Do give them a visit, if you love seafood!
Quality can be inconsistent. I have had some of the best meals from here and also been disappointed.
We had excellent fish and chips and a whole lot more tonight at Eat Fish in Ashburton. I have always found the fish and chips at shops that sell fresh fish a step above the others and tonight was no exception. We ordered salt and pepper calamari and prawn skewers to begin with and a Eat Fish fried pack and a grilled fish wrap for the larger part of the meal. The chips were excellent and potato cakes good. I was impressed with the thickness of the fish of the day in the fish pack (think this was English Whiting). A great find on the way home and plenty of lucky locals dropping in.
Side note: We would have tried their in house made fish cakes had we not had fish cakes last night.they were huge.
This is a well known fish and chips joint in Ashburton that sells a wide range of fresh fish and seafood.
You can buy the seafood fresh to cook yourself at home, or have them cook it for you to eat in or takeaway.
I had read a lot of recent mixed reviews, so I was a bit worried, but I really enjoyed my meal here! You could tell that the seafood was very fresh, especially the prawns which were nice, plump and firm. Highly recommend the prawn skewers!
The batter for the fish was thin and crispy and the chips were crunchy and well cooked. The burger I had was massive, and the beef patty was thick and juicy.
I was a bit hesitate before walking into the shop after reading some of the reviews. But the food was actually a lot better that I was expecting! Fish was golden brown and juicy inside, calamari rings were tasty fried and the size of the chips was generous. Definitely worth a re-visit!
There was a long queue in front of me when I got there, had to wait for some extra minutes. However I think it was totally worth it. Ordered grilled salmon and it was absolutely fantastic! Surprised that they could maintain the quality of their food considering how busy they were tonight.
Extremely disappointed! The fish had a strong odour and was absolutely tasteless. Ordered the barramundi and received some form of very cheap fish as a substitute, it was inedible. What a waste of money because it certainly isn't cheap. Also very rude with poor customer service. Save yourself the time, effort and money.
Have been a customer here for many years, but sadly the quality of the fish and chips has plummeted over the past few months. Tonight's fish broke apart and crumbled while serving, batter was soft and full of oil. (see photo)
Our chips were at best luke warm after having sat in their box at the shop while waiting for the fish to be ready. The flake being served is no longer white and flaky, in fact almost grey and quite darkly discoloured in parts. I wonder where it is being sourced?
Over priced and undercooked food, your so called salt and pepper calamari had no flavour what so ever tasteless. Dim sims and spring rolls are not home made very disappointed, don't waste your time here. Desuksting
Really good quality fish - I usually buy my fish here and when I can't be bothered cooking dinner, I'll grab their take away!
