Di Stasio Citta reviews
65This is a very elegant Italian restaurant on Spring Street, Melbourne. My sisters and I had a fabulous meal together here and we will visit again soon.
Quite good.but just got charged $28 for an up sold side of broccoli? Front of house had absolutely zero interest in explaining why and was as awkward as a school kid we we questioned it. Bummer, really nice meal otherwise
Took 6 of my girlfriends / colleagues to Citta last Saturday for lunch prior to hitting the Elton John concert. I arrived 15 minutes early as I thought the girls may miss the discreet entrance. It was a sunny Saturday morning so I sat outside on 1 of the casual cafe tables. Before I knew it, we had table service, champagne, bucket, oysters and other nibbles to be enjoyed by the arriving group. It really worked, despite being on the city pavement, we basked in the sunshine opposite the park and took in the top end of Melbourne, anticipating what Citta had in store for us inside. We were not disappointed. All of us loved our main course; some had the lamb and gave it a huge wrap- tender and tasty squares, we dont know how it was possible. Many had the crab pasta that was acclaimed as divine, I had the Barolo risotto. It arrived having not the most appetizing appearance (a flat round of red arborrio, - don't really know how else it could be presented) - but this is exactly how you do risotto and I cant wait to get back and have it again. Barolo wine and tangy Parmesan taste worked perfectly for me. I asked the sommelier for wine suggestions, he discreetly suggested a price range and then he chose wonderfully. Don't expect a budget wine list, but all that I recognized was great quality and great tasting. Citta also offers Prosecco (yes, believe it or not, I have found that some Italian inspired restaurants do not!), however the champagne and wine were perfect for our celebration. By this time of the afternoon, we were joyous with delicious food and wine, enjoying the modern but warm chic gallery-like decor that compliments the menu and service style in a wonderful marriage of traditional meets contemporary. I found the wait staff courteous, friendly, engaging and efficient. (I was not expecting this after many experiences at DiStasio St Kilda in the old days - always a fabulous dining experience with great food however sometimes haughty waiters kept you on your toes. Personally, I don't get offended, as they are efficient and not rude). I was relieved to experience the service, with the right mix of professionalism, style and hospitality for the environment at Citta. It was now dessert time, we had to scramble a little to get to Elton John and they obliged; we shared all of the desserts and they were equally delicious, hitting the sweet spot for all. My favorite was the frutta - bitter / sweet thin slices soaked in some yummy sort of campari -type concoction - much better than my description. Worked well with my espresso. Way too soon we had to depart to see Elton - he was fantastic but nearly outdone by our first class lunch experience. Our group without exception cant wait to get back. Thank-you for helping me spoil my staff with your chic decor, expert service and sophisticated but simply delicious dining. VV
Projections are awesome.
As a vegetarian there weren't many options on the menu but the lovely waiter made a simple cheesy pasta that was exactly what I wanted.atmosphere and service great!
Had a client lunch today, Table of 4. To start we had the Asparagus and eggplant to share. It was nothing special and a little underwhelmed. The main courses consisted of pigeon pie, small but apparently very rich and tasty. My other colleagues had the Rum steak and Turbot. They were cooked well although the crispy skin as described by the waiter did not materialise. The rump was cooked well. I had a vegan mushroom pasta which was very tasty and plentiful. The food overall was average at best. The decor was like the food underwhelming. This restaurant has an identy crisis and in my humble opinion missed the mark particularly given the current hype surrounding it.
Reached out to Di Stasio direct but did not get a response.
A group of 8 of us dined at Citta. Whilst we enjoyed the setting and the warm welcome, we have a couple of complaints which made for a disappointing experience.
We ordered some starters and entrees to share and these were all fantastic. For main, 5 of us ordered the crab pasta. This however was almost to the point of inedible, overbearing with far too much salt. This was the consensus around our table. It seems the chef had been heavy handed with salt in this dish and did not taste what they were preparing. For an establishment like Di Stasio Citta this is unacceptable. As we were pressed for time we decided to persevere as we would have missed our next engagement if we re-ordered.
The second problem lies with the style of wine pouring by some of their staff. I get the bravado of vigorously pouring water and wine however a couple of staff pouring wine at our table were so vigorous that a lot of our wine ended up on the tablecloth and not in our glass. This was to the point where we had to stop the waiter and pour our own wine.
Disappointing experience.
A truly unique dining experience from the moment you enter. Despite the stark concrete and glass interior it has a warm feel. Moving art on the walls, genuine service from the waiters capped off with incredible, delicious Italian cuisine.
Impeccable food and cocktails, great service, modern environment. Crab pasta and red wine risotto are standouts.
Good food. Service was ok. Waiter was great but they forgot our entree and went straight to main and also forgot one drink, which we had to request again. Desert and cocktails we great but pricey.
Holy macaroni! What a great spot. Beautiful decor, feels like you're eating in an art gallery.not as daunting as it sounds. Very impressed with the food, will be going back soon.
DI STASIO SHI-TTA!
The most overpriced, poor quality Italian restaurant we know.
As we sat down at the start of our time there, the Owner was sure to groom us into thinking the about-to-be terrible experience would be ‘buonissimo’. Perhaps other cultural demographics with little knowledge of Italian food would think this, but to butcher what the Owner described as simple ‘cucina povera’ food to Italians, and charge a fortune for it, is not at all the Italian way.
With about five other tables occupied and staff just standing around, it seemed there was no reason besides laziness the food was so slow.
We ordered the oven baked scallops which were burnt yet cold, not to mention we paid $29 just for two.
We also were served a cold, flavourless spaghetti with what seemed like three measly prawns cut into tiny pieces.
Due to how slow and terrible everything had been, we ended up cancelling other dishes and going to another restaurant to actually get a decent portion of food.
If we could give this ‘restaurant’ a zero rating we would. Never again.
Food was good, but there are plenty of Italian options with better food and great wines at a cheaper price. Scallops had too much crumbing, asparagus was great but sparce, eggplant great if a little too salty, spaghetti beautifully El dente but the sauce a bit dry. Service excellent
After many great experiences sadly disappointed due to bad service despite the good food. Over crowding shouldn't be at the expense of bad service.
Service was good but food was mediocre. Scallops were salty and uninspired, anchovies were deep fried, linguine and chopped prawns were oily and the espresso was cold. Decor was interesting and wine suggestion was good.
Just loved our experience here. My husband and I popped in Cup eve for an early dinner and loved everything about this place. We cant wait to get back there
I wanted to like it more, but it falls short of their St Kilda venue and the experience was rather bizarre.
The interior is terrible: the industrialist/artistic space is ruined by tacky bright red chairs and art that doesn’t seem to have a theme/isn’t engaging. It’s a beautiful space that’s been designed outdated luxe in some areas, industrial modern in others. It simply doesn’t work.
The wait staff are a little too gregarious at times. Not in a good way.
The food was good but it was simply too heavy and rich.
Food was delicious. I had the gnudi di spinaci e ricotti (very buttery and rich) and the spaghetti saltati. Cool vibe and dining experience. My particular service was slow - that’s really my only complaint.
The best dining experience I can remember in my old age. The seat at the bar scene was lively and the tender extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wines, not to mention a master cocktail craftsman without any pretense. The small plates superb and service impeccable. Thanks for a great experience in Melbourne, from an old American!
A bit of Sydney for the Melbourne CBD. Perhaps it's the upbeat lighting and white jackets. Good service and solid food. Some dissonance between the self conscious fitout/wall projections and the older/family crowd. Avoid the bar seats. Look for the button to left on entry.
I really wanted to be impressed with our adventure to Di Stassio Citta - and I was with the environment; fab videos on the walls and really good wine (v.expensive wine list).
But sadly, not one of the three other people at our table exclaimed over or raved about their food. I had pigeon pie - v.small and delicious and the apple pie dessert was lovely - cinnamon free apple (thank goodness) between perfect pastry.
Overall though, not the success I was hoping for.
