Apollo Bay Bakery reviews
66 Well I was told here had famous scallop pies
I was left disappointed with the curry scallop
In taste plus it was over filled which meant it went everywhere also 12 dollars for a pie really
Average bakery, nothing bad but nothing special.
A standout was the curried scallop pie. Only 2 scallops and watery, for $12. Definitely pass on that.
If you are after Scallop Pie, this is the best place for it. Have tried a couple in Tasmania but nothing beats this place. Scallops are big and fresh. Was there for three times during our stay in Apollo Bay.
Wish there was more consistency in the amount of scallops in each pie. It ranges from 4-6 scallops in each pie.
The bakery makes fresh bread and soudough bread. Bought the multigrain sourdough bread and it was pretty good. Overall a great experience!
You know what I do not like on a Sunday morning? Attitude.
What did I get from the bakery? A pie, a chicken and avocado sandwich & a hole lot of attitude.
Whilst I was waiting for my coffee, I was also waiting to catch a bus.
I approached the coffee lady & politely asked how much longer the flat white would be? Her response was “what” (she seemed to be in a kerfuffle)
I repeated the question & her response was “if you stop talking to me it will be done quicker”.
After this interaction, I just walked out and didn’t collect the coffee.
Bit of pepper & Salt in your sandwiches & an attitude adjustment will go a long way.
Won’t be back.
Pretty good pies, although I prefer mince based pies rather than chunky and the pepper pie I got was a chunky. With that in mind the flavour was lovely and the quality of meat was excellent. The only problem for the ceoliacs is that the gluten free cakes may contain gluten? But pointless and shows they don't really get gluten free for ceoliacs
Popped into this bakery coming home from the Otways and grabbed some scallop pies, a beef + Guiness pie and a vegie pastie. Scallop pies are $12 each but understandable given the cost of ingredients. The pies were all enjoyable but not outstanding. The shop had a good range of bread, rolls, and cakes as well as even some vegan options! Frozen scallop pies were available but no cold ones which was a shame as they would be good for people heading back to overnight accommodation or Geelong.
Excellent coffee and a great variety of baked goods on main shopping strip across the beach. Very popular with locals and visitors.
Had a curry scallop pie and a flat white.
The coffee wasn’t great, needed the flavour to be dialled up a little (different beans, more grind, pressure).
They were generous with the quantity of scallops inside the pie but again the flavour was just a little too subtle. The pastry a tad undercooked for my liking, the base was almost too soft to pick up and eat but it hit the spot on a cool summer morning.
It’s expensive with the above coming to $15 but you get value for that.
Would return to give the mornay scallop pie a go.
- Edit -returned for a cheeseburger, and a cauliflower and broccoli pie. Pastries were nice and firm, crunchy. The cheeseburger is a winner, it is basically the makings of a cheeseburger inside a pie. A patty, slice of cheese, pickles and mustard covered in beef mince gravy.
The c&b was more hit and miss, I didn’t like that it was all cut up into small pieces (almost like vege mince) instead of having chunks and the creamy sauce a tad bland.
Very nice pies! I went here two morning in a row. Although i am not a fish person, the scallop pie was nice! Although expensive the scallop pie was, it was understandable being made with an expensive ingredient. I had the Guinness and chesseburger pies the next day and loved both, my favourite was the guinness though. It’s important to support the otways during these times as tourism drops almost completely in this region. The town must be doing it tough and it takes the people of victoria to help put cash back into businesses. Will return to try others!
Edit: oh, and i also forgot, i met the baker in great ocean road hotel, glen? He was incredibly friendly also and i bumped into him the following morning and he was polite again also!
Stopped in for a quick pastie on my way through town, and was not let down.
Meat and vegetable pastie was one of the best I’ve had - good temperature, pastry was perfect, and the filling was full of flavour. The lady who served me was really nice as well. The bakery was very busy, but I was waiting less than 2 minutes to be served which goes to show that you guys are running a tight ship here.
Great job guys - keep up the good work! Will be dropping in again if I’m ever down this way again.
By the far the beat place to have breakfast in Apollo Bay. Friendly staff and nice selection of pastry.
The pie with scallops was delcious. The original one with leek was very good, but the one with cheese was certainly interesting, as well. Friendly staff and also very good coffee.
Very Disappointed! Cost $12.00 for one pie and scallops were rubber nor tasty at all extremely disappointed. They over charge, take advantage of the tourist definitely not worth going back.
My husband and I dropped in just for the famous scallop pies.
The lady behind the counter was friendly and efficient. We ordered 2 scallop pies 1 in the curry and 1 in mornay, as well as a coffee each and a coffee scroll to share.
In my opinion the mornay scallop pie, was not great, however the curry was on point the flavours and texture was on point (my husband enjoyed both). The coffees were not too bad and well you can't go wrong with a coffee scroll.
Was taking my with my partner to decide on which pies we wanted to order and was interrupted by the server. Felt like she was rushing us to make our purchase as soon as possible. When we asked which of their scallop pies were more popular, her first response was that they were both equally as good. Fortunately she realized soon after that her comment wasn’t really helpful and proceeded to explain the different between the two pies.
Pie was okay, but service definitely could be better.
We were on a bus trip on The Great Southern Road. I had a scallop pie ($10) it was beautiful and full of scallops with a nice flakey pastry. Extra serviettes given for the juice. Custard square was quite nice and the carrot cake looked good but was a bit moist.
Stopped by this bakery around 2pm & it wasn’t quiet neither was it very busy. I Guess I managed to skip the peak! There’s a huge variety of savoury and sweet bakes. I tried their famous scallop pie (white sauce) which cost $12. It was a lil pricey but taste wise, it was really good! Piping hot, and the sauce had a slight tang to it so the white sauce doesn’t get overwhelming after awhile. Crust was flakeytoo! Absolutely loved it
Disappointing & expensive.
Pies were bland.
Vanilla slice lacked flavour.
Brownie was overcooked & crystalised.
Expected considerably better quality for the price paid.
The food is below average. The price of the food is absolutely ridiculous! Expect to pay upwards of 10 dollars for their 'famous pie'!
Chunky beef pie was mostly a regular "party pie" style with a couple of dry bits of beef. Scallop pie was nothing special. The pastry was pretty average. Definitely overpriced because the pies are not very nice.
