The Whaler reviews
73 The whaler is the sort of pub you seek solace in when it's freezing and is a bit stinky during the summer months.
It's part of the old Hobart, the sandstone road that houses a row of old timey cuisines like Thai, Italian and indian. It's hard to tell how local places like these are amongst the tourists.
But the atmosphere was good, staff were friendly and it'll probably be here in a couple of hundred years.
Decent pub, warm with fire place. Good food and selection of alcohol. Outdoor seating for summer or the brave in winter!
Well made lemon-lime and bitters.
The lamb souvlaki was delicious and well portioned.
Service was adequate and friendly.
Prices were reasonable.
First time inTasmania, First beer in Tasmania! Great choice gaz! Great staff, very helpful! Very amicable atmosphere, and from my first impression, very popular bar. Will definitely visit again.all the best Whaler.
A regular go-to when I'm in Hobart for work, The Whaler is a great place to sit and have a pint or two in Salamanca. Friendly staff and a warm atmosphere.
After dinner, our group stayed for drinks.
While chatting next to the piano, I was hit by something on the neck. The barmaid had pelted me with an ice cube and shouted "move away from the piano" before giggling to her friends about it.
Staff failed to give a decent apology. Promised one free pint, which they didnt do. Owner notified and failed to apologise for their actions once.
Will now never go back and encourage others to go where the staff understand basic manners and hospitality.
Great wings & fried haloumi. Fast service and nice outdoor seating. Staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations. Would visit again if in the area.
Perfect place for a craft beer and some yummy food. The location in right in the middle of the action, the staff are very friendly and the selection of both beers and food is perfect. Had a great time while visiting.
Seems like a nice bar, however rudest bar staff I have ever encountered, Erin (manager apparently), was possibly the most inhospitable host ever, when I asked a question about the menu, she was clearly not interested in providing any help, I could go on but suffice to say this was a disappointing start to our stay in Hobart, it can only get better.
Service was quick and friendly, drink choices were solid and the food was fantastic. Both the Bourbon BBQ Wings and the 'Whac' burger were spot on! Definitely one to return too.
Excellent selection of beer, top notch service, quality food, and the atmosphere is great for such a busy place. Go see for yourself. You won't regret it.
Food very overpriced and average, sticky tables which are uncomfortable after a while as they are steel. Not kid friendly have kid meals but wouldn't take kids back
The words 'gourmet' and 'pub food' don't usually go together but this place is absolutely amazing, me and the boys make it a mission to come in at least every fortnight to get the wings here. Everything on the menu is of exceptional standards, well priced for what you get, everything is so fresh and tasty it's remarkable really, it's clear the chef takes a lot of pride in their work. They have a massive selection of beer, whiskey, gin, vodka basically whatever you could possibly want branded or craft and if by some reason they don't have exactly what you'd like the terrific and helpful bar staff will go above and beyond to suggest something similar. Good selection of local brews on tap. The decor is beautifully old fashioned with an oak bar and stained glass pictures around the place, old posters and a fireplace in the corner which really allows you to encapsulate that this place is a little over 180 years old. This is the undeniable pinnacle of how a bar in Hobart should be.
Awesome tiny pub! The food is really good! And the service is friendly. The only reason it didn't get five stars is because the bathroom has no soap or soap dispenser.it's a bit of a concern.
Cosy, quaint, proper old pub. Very competent, friendly staff. Good and not overwhelming menu for food and drinks. Had a Barrel Aged Brooklyn (nice twist on a Manhattan), a beer and some hot chips that were obscenely yummy.
Good drinks, friendly staff, great location, and outdoor seats. We were tourists, but a bunch of locals kept bumping into each other.
Coolest barman. Delicious and generous meals. One of the most consistently delicious steaks in Tassie. Our lunchtime treat spot!
A nice bar with an outside area overlooking all the action. Food is pub style. Lots of drinks to choose from.
It's was a child spring evening in Hobart, they had the fire roaring and a good selection of local and mainland craft beers. Ordered a burger and was again pleasantly surprised.
Unfortunately was only a short stay so didn't get to enjoy the outside seating on a warmer day.
Quaint and cosy. Lots of character. Dimly lit in a romantic kind of way. Often has funky live music.
