The Whaler reviews
73 Great kids fish and chips. Adults enjoyed the lobster roll and chips.
Bar staff were kind and friendly and service was quick.
We went there 3 times in 3 days!
Enjoyed the live music and up beat atmosphere, and felt welcome amongst the many locals enjoying after work drinks and Christmas drinks parties.
Highly recommend the Harbour Master amber ale on tap.
Open fire, quirky stained glass panels. Fantastic at any time of year. Shame
they no longer serve Cascade beer on tap.
Awesome spot amongst the CBD wharf eatery precinct. Popular after work for drinks & a feed, it's small but cozy, the staff are welcoming, the food was good!
The food took an hour and a half to come and we ordered first the chips were too salty and oily
Very disappointing. Met a friend for lunch - Both our Whac Burgers were barely warm when served to us, after waiting 45 minutes for our food. This is the third time they have served a barely warm Burger in the last year. Will not be back.
Rating is based on food only as I was not allowed inside by security because I was wearing thongs. I found this a bit silly, but was still happy to sit out the front to eat and drink. Will check it out properly if I'm ever in the area again.
That was a damn good parma. No Ham but the cheese was terrific and the chicken tender and well seasoned. The lobster role was, I'm told, 'quite good' tho quite pricey for not a lot of food. Location and atmosphere was terrific, as you really get a sense of Hobart. My bartender was friendly and cheerful, tho another in my party had a bartender (tall fellow) with a very bad attitude. I shan't deduct more points tho, maybe he was having a bad day, and who hasn't had one of those? !
Wonderful atmosphere. Great place to sit and watch Hobart Waterfront activity.
PS. Food is fantastic.
Great atmosphere.
The lobster roll tastes good but a not disappointed. Perhaps, I had higher expectation when its advertised as world famous lobster roll.
Mussel bowl, on the other hand, was such a lovely surprise.
Overall we enjoyed our meal.
Absolutely amazing food and super amazing mussels. As a large group we were extremely grateful to be accommodated. However I would give 5 stars if the young bar member didn't role his eyes and look upset on our arrival. He was rude and I get that you maybe upset on a large group attending but when we run over $600 in an hour you have to just take the good with the bad. All in all complement to the Chefs However let's improve front bar staff.
The lobster roll is their signature dish. At $28 it is not great value because the lobster meat is neither fleshy not chunky, just a few fine strands. But pretty fresh and delicious nevertheless.
Wine not up agreed level, and then on to the World Famous Lobster rolls, famous for the poor quality, one would even suggest it was tinned crab meat mixed with mayo!
My wife had the lobster roll. It was yummy and fresh and vibrant.
I had the whale chowder.
It was delicious. The white fish had a nice firmness with a smokey finish, and the main body of the dish had a lovely taste.
I'm not even a seafood fan, but they did it justice.
Came here for lunch and dinner, it was great! Grace made a difference, she worked so much harder than anyone else and was super friendly. To be honest when we came back at night time it seemed like she was being let down by the other lady in the bar, as the other woman was doing nothing whilst Grace was working hard.
Grace deserves a payrise and promotion the way she looks after the business
Friendly staff, good beer, great burgers, the pork tacos are a stand out, busy but there is a reason for that, went back the next day as it was so good.
Great pub with great staff and an excellent outdoor seating area not to mention the best ever burgers!
A must visit place in Hobart!
Wow! Thank you so much Stevie! For being so flexible! I know I changed my mind twice and I was a customer from hell, but you were so nice and accommodating! Massive thank you!
Refreshing version of seafood chowder here, highly recommended. Wide selection of beers and the lobster roll is really tasty. Cosy ambience inside with a wood fireplace and pretty stained glass decorations.
Travelled the whole of Tasmania looking for the perfect meal - Ate at expensive restaurants on our trip then found this amazing old pub in Hobart
THE BEST LOBSTER ROLL EVER!
Not as good as it used to be. Went there in a cold Sunday and the fire wasn’t on, the fish and chips was ling (ling is a rubbish fish I reckon). My fault for ordering ling but being cold during winter is bleahh.
