Shot Tower reviews
61Absolutely beautiful here. Was a wonderful place to take a visitor from Queensland to for the unique experience, beautiful vista & wonderful service plus the most amazing Devonshire tea. Will definitely be going back.
Although I arrived after closing the caretaker allowed me to go to the top of the Shot Tower.
It is a very very long way up (58 metres, 318 steps).
Completed in 1870, all but the top 6 steps are the original timbers.
It is the first and tallest stone Shot Tower in the southern hemisphere.
Great Views from top and only $8 entry and, only 318 old wooden steps. Can catch 429 bus, drops you at doorstep or 426 (more frequent) to Taroona terminus and walk (10 mins) see if driver will drop you at main road turnoff as the Shot Tower is up hill and around a few bends.
Cafe was closed when we visited, but we still had a great time. What a view! But don't climb to the top if you are scared of heights because this one is a doozer!
We stumbled on this place while on a trip to Hobart. It was a beautiful day and we have a very nice Devonshire Tea in the gardens. The owner, Paul, was very friendly, and the scones he makes are delicious! Well worth it.
Interesting to see but not alot written or available re the history of the building. Nice little cafe downstairs.
Worth checking out if you're passing by. Cool piece of history and stunning view. There is an entry fee but seems fair enough to maintain it.
Lovely view from the top. Was fascinating hearing how the tower was built and how they created lead shot. Lots and lots of stairs! Prob give it a miss if heights aren't your thing!
Been here many times over the years. The new owners are very friendly & genuine people. A very interesting climb to the top & great fun for the kids. Topped off with excellent, fresh traditional scones outside in the lovely gardens all makes for a great family outing.
Beautiful old building and the lady at reception was lovely to deal with and very informative. The little museum was great and packed full of information.
No doubt the view would have been spectacular if my fear of heights didn't creep up on the 10th stair!
Historical and beautiful place runs by great people. Don't miss the Devonshire Tea in the Tea Rooms, scones are really yummy.
Closed about an hour before we arrived. Lovely old building and grounds. Nice spot for a quiet picnic.
What a delight to find there was a Devonshire tea place here at the end of our Alum Cliffs walk! Lovely coffee and scones whilst cooling off at the tables outside. Very genuine friendly service.
Nice and historic place to visit. Nice views from the top of the tower. Lots of ancient story of guns and bullets.
Best scones ever! The climb to the top is with the view - amazing bit of history - challenges the nerves climbing all the timber stairs to the top!
Stair case/ wooden internal structure is very intresting. Staff are friendly. Entry price seemed a bit steep but glad i went. Amazing and terryfing view from top. Small museum is intresting
Okay experience. Lots of stairs with an okay view. The caretaker was nice but a bit overpriced for the view.
Lots of steps! Also a lovely location, beautiful views, a cool piece of history and for me a whole lot of memories.
Nice location. Good view and a number of historical houses close by. Devonshire tea is very good. Fancy cups, two whole scones, plenty of jam and thick Proper cream.
