Shot Tower reviews
61An amazing experience, the tower wasn’t too hard of a climb, awesome view from the top and very interesting history, tearoom was gorgeous with some delicious scones. Gift shop is also worth a look. The staff were all lovely and very helpful, an easy 5 stars and a must see when in Hobart or surrounding areas.
We came here as we had time to kill and I'm glad we did. AUD10 entry to the tower. Lots of information to read and artifacts. The climb to the top was strenuous and I don't advise looking down if you're scared of heights. The views from the top were excellent.
There's a small gift shop where tickets are sold. Downstairs is the cafe which is very twee. About 100 teas to choose from served to your preference. The scones were amazing and I'm not even a huge fan of them! Warm and not at all dry, they melted in your mouth. Very reasonably priced as well. AUD15 for 2 scones and a sharing pot of tea.
Definitely worth the climb to the top. 318 steps I’m told and the view is outstanding. Never knew that was how shot was produced.
Another piece of beautiful architectural construction, particularly at the time. Also some nice walks from here
It was great! Took my nephew up and we counted the steps, got the right number and got the prize! Woohoo!
Quaint, same scone recipe as we had 40 years ago passed down from owner to owner. I also climbed to the top of the shot tower, a bit more effort 40 years on.
Beautiful spot. I walked from the cbd through mount nelson to here. It’s a beautiful day walk if the weather is nice. Totally recommended
Delicious jam and cream scones at the cage and the service is lovely too. The spot is beautiful on a warm day, shaded under the trees with lots of outdoor (and indoor) seating. Would recommend a visit.
Fun climbing inside the tower. Great views from the top. Coffee and scones in the atmospheric cafe made our morning
The kitchen was unclean, and the coffee tasted burnt. Absolutely horrible, not to mention the price? ! Do not recommend.
So unique, managed by very nice family, it is must visit. Coffee and scones, toasties and tea. Great service, feels like visiting grandmas place. Beautiful garden and outdoor sitting. Climb to the top and check the view!
The best little site nestled away. Highly recommend the scones and tea (Tasmanian breakfast was my kryptonite) the man who bakes the scones was the absolute best. He was so nice and even gave us hints about how he makes the best scones on the planet (my words). They were like eating clouds, so fluffy and light. The ambience of the tea house inside was cosy and magical. I can imagine a cool winters day with the fire going would be beautiful. The tower itself is a very cool historic site, worth the walk up to the top. Stunning views of the bay in the distance. Well worth the visit all-round if you like history, cosy tea and scones, and nice people.
Good parking expensive to climb tourist and climb if you are young or your heart is, shop full of junk, coffee shop ok
The view at the top was actually very nice all around. And interesting learning about shot. Perfect activity if you have an hour or so to kill.
Lovely friendly staff, great tea and homemade scones. Tower is worth the stop and climb for a wide view. Some nice historical artifacts to look at.
Both my partner and I are scared of heights but managed to walk up the stairs - the view was magnificent and worth doing it! (the trick was to not look back and keep looking forward) My partner being a carpenter explained that the old timber stairs can feel a little bouncy to make it less tiring for the workers in the old days which made total sense.
Freshly house baked scones with strawberry jam and coffees after the walk were amazing! Staffs there were really friendly and lovely too. It was overall such a great experience. Will definitely be back!
Best tea and scones I've ever had! Staff was lovely and the environment was calm and cosy. My partner took me there on a date, and it was the best date we've ever been on personally! <3
And if you you wanna climb amazing history that you're still allowed to climb and touch as if it was still working, this is it! It's such a bummer that some kids don't want to read all the facts and history here as it is AMAZING! If you have kids they will love it but they won't want to hang while you engross yourself in the written history that is available for us buffs. Totally worth every step to the top!
SHOT TOWER
The Shot Tower Taroona in south of Hobart. It is a beautiful, tall and symmetrical structure built back in 1870. According to history it was built in 8 months and for 100 years, it was the tallest building in all of Tasmania and in the southern hemisphere. It is approx 60 m tall and has 318 steps to the top.
But it's beauty belies its function. Molten lead, antinomy and arsenic were poured through the top of the tower into cooling water to create spherical shot for muskets. Lovely 360 degree view at the top.
Lovely views from the top. Safe for toddlers and those with good knees. Excellent interpretive information. Good variety of old fashioned lollies in jars, sold by weight, in the gift shop.
