Paul's Seafood on Gouger reviews
69 Over priced and below average food.
Has gone down hill since we last went there a year or so ago.
Overrated and overpriced, had grilled john dory and that all that came out on the plate. We sat upstairs and everything that was being cooked ended up on our table, range hood needs an upgrade. Plus side we had a nice waitress who was very friendly.
Could be so much better given the quality of our locally caught seafood - disappointing experience
Great restaurant, good food, good service, good prices, what more could you ask for. Highly recommended.
Oysters could be fresher, meal portions bit small. Pretty pricey. Attentive waitress. Battered fish was ok.
Food overall was ok taste wise but very small serve of scallops for a main meal and one of the staff members was very abrupt and disinterested, quite mediocre
Staff very disinterested, just pointed what table to sit at dropped menus on corner of table and walked away. No atmosphere very old worn tired decor. Had to ask for drinks when we wanted them. 1 star only for the guy cooking at least he acknowledged and talked to us on entry and leaving. Food and a few beers $160. Glorified expensive small serve fish and chip shop. Wont be back.
The Chef is the best feature of this seafood establishment!
The “service” was very slack with the lady owner (?) paying more attention to the passing sidewalk traffic than to clearing our prawn cocktail and oyster entree plates - the Chef had to tell her to do so, as he was about to bring out our main courses!
I assume she must be an owner as I can’t see anyone employing her as a waitress!
Food was a good 7 or 8 out of 10 but not cheap. I had the salt and pepper prawn, scallop & calamari combination which was tasty. My wife had a single fillet of battered Whiting, chips & salad which she enjoyed. We had a glass of wine each.
The decor is original 1970s and looks worn & dated.
Great hospitality. Booked a table over the phone. The receptionist was really cheerful and warm. Upon arrival she was nice, guided us to our table. And throughout the stay she was great. Attended with a smile, and described things well when asked.
Now, about the main part food and pricing. I randomly selected this one as I needed to book a place for ‘seafood’ and it was the closest at Adelaide CBD. Freshly prepared fish and meals were nice however the pricing seems to be more than what it should be like. Most probably it’s due to their reputation. Since they are a really old place they probably deserve to keep it at that range. Not sure.
Overall, it’s a good place for seafood if price is not an issue. And the service is definitely awesome.
I would give 4.5 due to the pricing, but I think it’s up to them & also there’s no. 5 option anyway.
Cheers!
$119 for 2 with 2 drinks. Lobster over cooked, chewy. Fruits of the sea was a ton of batter and ok seafood. The chef seemed utterly disinterested. Zero atmosphere. The salad was appauling. Paul's has been in Adelaide pre the 80s but it seems the passion has left.
Food was delicious and service was great.
I couldn't take a photo as food didn't last long enough we will definitely go back.
I was keen to try some King George Whiting. Before the main I was tempted by a baby abalone as an entree which I enjoyed. For the whiting I had one fillet crumbed and the other battered with wedges and salad. The meal was excellent and I had a glass of Riesling off the recommended list a Crabtree Hilltop which was great. Highly recommend.
I love seafood and I have had Paul’s Seafood a few times delivered but dining in is a much better experience, very friendly staff thank you I will be going back here, highly recommended!
Food was really yummy. I had crambed baramundi and the fish was delicious and fresh.
Tartare sauce was delish.
Staff were very friendly and patient; they managed a overly loud, demanding and boisterous group of my family well.
I'm sorry to the other customers on this Monday who thought the restaurant would be quiet.
Our waitress was quite rude and condescending when she spoke to us. She failed to mention to us that some parts of the menu are substituted (menu clearly stated wedges with each menu while we got french fries). She didn't understand how we didn't know this even though she never mentioned this to us? Furthermore the menu stated these are homemade, however she said "we can't provide wedges since we haven't bought any today" which by default suggests these are not homemade. The king prawns were tiny to any other king prawn I have eaten (and trust me I love my seafood and have been to a multitude of restaurants and these were not up to size), and the salads were very bland. We had a group of people and only got one tiny sauce bowl to share between us (although the menu says everyone gets their own?). We tried getting the staffs attention but they were just having a casual chat behind the bar. The total price we paid in the end was ridiculous too, we were all thinking why we didn't just go to Barnacle Bill instead since the food was basically the same at only a fraction of the price. I personally wouldn't go back and would not recommend this place. A discount was given though, however, this doesn't excuse the poor communication towards us by the staff.
Now that I've seen this "Adelaide institution", I have no desire to return. Glorified fish n chip shop. No care into the food, just thrown on the plate. "Famous" wedges were hard and uninspiring. The basic battered Hake fish was decent though. Absolute has been. Also charge you for a squirt of basic tomato sauce from a bottle #unAustralian.
Very nice garlic bread. Chose seafood platter for two with snapper. Fresh, tasty, grilled just right, good sized serves, prompt service, value for money. Look forward to trying other dishes.
A bit dear for what it is. Positives were a generous kids meal portion and nice seating outside. I liked the wedges but they needed salt. Service was good. My wife liked the barramundi but I thought the grilled snapper lacked flavour. We were sitting outside and the staff asked 3 customers to smoke about 5 metres away from us. Given we had two young kids with us we found that very disappointing.perhaps ask customers to go for a short walk rather than smoke directly next to tables.
Very good seafood and even better service! Didn't try the oysters but the fish was fresh though fried and we enjoyed the good-size serving of soft-shell crabs.
Fresh seafood, great expedient service, underpriced in my opinion. Non-descript front easily dismissed if passing by. Recommended by local foodie acquaintance. Thumbs up!
