Mexican Society reviews
77Good food, the one star goes for the service. We were a group of 6 and were seated in a table that is meant to be for 4 people. We chose to go with one of the set menu options and we all specifically requested to remove coriander from all the dishes (where possible of course) and put it on the side if it is included in the salsa. The waiter taking the order seemed so confused about the request but then said they will try and remove it where possible. When the plates started coming, there was no space on the table to place them and the waiters where just standing there holding the plates, looking at us, while kept saying that the table is too small and not everything fits. After making space for most of the plates of the starters (we were trying to eat as fast as we could to get rid of the empty plates), when the mains arrived we asked if they could bring one the big platters later as there was zero space to fit it. The waiter responded with no and ended up leaving the dish on my friends hands to hold and she left. I will add on top of this that ALL the dishes had coriander sprinkled on top! One of the worst experiences. Would never go back.
Attend this restaurant with a large group. The atmosphere was great and the service in regards to drinks were great.
The let down for a few of us was the banquet. Due to the fact that there were quite a few vegetarians the banquet dishes were a little mixed up and the portions just weren't easy to share amongst the non vegetarians. The first two dishes of the entrees were significantly underportioned - one tiny bowl of corn chips/salsa between 5 of us?
The first 2 serves were tiny and not enough when compared with other tables.
The dishes themselves had some flavour but weren't overly exciting in comparison to other 'feed me/baquet" style menus I've had before.
Wouldn't go back after tonight's experience for some time.
For starters, violated Covid guidelines. Tables were so close you are part of someone else's conversation. Horrendously noisy. The food was bitterly disappointing. I am vegetarian so I ordered crisp cauliflower with crispy chickpeas, salsa, chimichurri etc. What I got was a mass of rice with stuff piled on top. I couldn't recognise anything. Too much rice, limp soggy cauli (bad childhood memories) and I don't know what. Confused pile of disappointment. My partner had chicken enchiladas. Again a pile, salsa on hot food, mayo or something all over. Just horrible. We live in regional SA and holidaying in Adelaide. So going out for dinner is something special. However, this was an expensive fast food experience. As soon as we arrived there was pressure to order, repeatedly. As soon as we ordered microwaved piles of sogginess arrived. Never again. Total waste of money and a disappointing night out. This is not a restaurant where you dine out. It is a noisy fast food joint. The food is better in our local Tavern and we can dine for as long as we like.
My partner and I had dinner at Mexican Society. The food and service were good, but not the best Mexican food we've had. Would recommend if you're in the area, but wouldn't go out of my way.
An upscale menu, centrally located. Staff knowledge was good, menu creative and excellent good. Highly recommended.
Lived in Mexico for 14 years. The Mexican Society is NOT something I would consider as Mexican, as Mexican as Chinese takeaway in the 70's!
Dry and tasteless.
I fell in love with this place. They won many awards for best Mexican food which was meant to be! Their food are super delicious and I would recommand you to try dishes such as their cauliflower as of writing i am really craving for it right now. Would recommand you to come here their staff is also friendly.
The food was great but the service was pretty bad. After 3 emails and 2 phone calls reminding me that we would only have our table until 8pm we knew our time was limited. It took over 20 minutes before everyone on our table had their first drink. We were then asked to settle our account at 7.45pm. It felt like we had to rush but the staff were allowed to take as much time as they wanted to get around to serving us and bringing our orders.
Very loud, service was fairly slow. 2nd time I have been there and the food didn't thrill me. Don't take my opinion on it.at least try it once
Amazing food for a good price. Friendly staff and prompt with service despite being booked out and busy. Definately keen to return.
Really nice atmosphere and the food is delicious. The chicken was beautifully cooked, juicy and succulent! There is a good range of spicy and non-spicy, meaty and vegetarian and lots gluten free options. The staff are lovely. There is so much 'crunch' and texture and exciting flavours, but very specialised - which is fine if you love authentic Mexican. The desserts are also delicious. Corn cake was divine and churros were beautifully crispy! The only thing I would say that could improve would be the timing of the meals. Each dish came at varying times rather than all at once. But we weren't waiting ages.
My husband and I came here last night (02/08) for our anniversary dinner.
Right off the bat we received fast service and our server, Paulo, was nothing short of attentive and considerate. He knew the menu very well and took the time to give us recommendations that he thought we would like. Seriously, his service was the reason we left the restaurant last night extremely happy and satisfied.
The atmosphere was very lively and reasonably lit, we were able to relax and settle in quickly. Decor was lovely and any complaints we had (partner said he would have liked a chair instated of a stool) were quite inconsequential because it didn't really impact our experience for the night.
We ordered the Flashy Mexican banquet, 2 margaritas and a sangria jug.
Starters came out with the Elote and Tostada de Salmon. Both were very delicious, although I thought they could have held back a bit on the seasoning for the corn (my partner said it was fine) and I was pleasantly surprised with how mild the smoked salmon on the tostada were.
For the taco portion of the banquet we ordered chilli fermented crab and carne asada. The carne asada was fantastic, the beef was soft and balanced.
There was a hiccup when we were given the second taco, we got the tomatillo pork belly instead by mistake and didn't realise until we had a bite. We brought it up to Paulo who quickly made sure that the mistake was rectified and told us that we didn't have to pay for the pork belly taco. The tomatillo pork belly was a great combination of textures and flavors, with the softness of the belly and the crunch of the crackling.
When we finally got to the chilli fermented crab it quickly became our favorite of the three tacos we had. The heat with the crab wasn't overpowering and each ingredient was given equal chance to shine.
The mains all came out together. We had the Lamb & Mezcal fajitas, Pescado Frito, Chilli Mortita Pork Ribs and Duck Ensalada. At this point the only words we used for each of those were "oh wow", "it's so good" and "wish we had more black beans". Again, the flavors were balanced and nothing overpowered each other.
Dessert was a nostalgic affair. We had the corn cake and the chilli chocolate mousse with banana cream.
The chocolate mousse was a new thing for us because of the chilli glaze. The glaze was mild and light so you'd get a bit of heat (if any) before the mousse and cream cools down your mouth.
The corn cake was a whole 'nother level. Such a simple dessert yet it was impressive. Warm, comforting and all round delicious; this is something we definitely will order again and again. My partner could easily have a large order to himself and still have room for more.
Overall, I haven't seen my partner this happy ever since he first proposed to me. We will definitely be coming back again and will also be bringing more people for future visits.
Quick service. Smaller sized meals. Fresh and tasty. Mexican food but don't expect the usually type served at a mexican restaurant
The food should be announced as Mexican inspired or Mexican fusion but not as Mexican food. Ask a person from Mexico if what they serve is Mexican food and the answer would be NO. Is not bad food, is just no real Mexican food, that’s all. BTW, the service was impeccable.
Was having a private conversation and told by bartender my friend wasn't taking to them. When they were informed of this, they told us but to talk to them. Pretty lame.
Okay 'mexican' food. Real deal Mexican tacos should come with corn tortillas, full stop. Otherwise I consider it American-mexican or texmex or whatever.service was a little bit slow, because there were only a couple servers and the whole place was packed. It's not really their fault, cause they can't be in 10 places at once. Will definitely go again! The set course was the way to go, so you can try a little bit of a bunch of dishes.
Edit: Came back again for the level 2 set course that includes your choice of taco. Seemed a bit rushed because a bunch of dishes came out at the same time.by the time you get to them, the have cooled down. I was seated outside btw so that doesn't help the situation. The duck dish was not as good as I remembered. It was dry this time.
I prefer to have set meals brought out sequentially and at a pace that matches the speed you are eating. A server that is on the ball would ensure that this happens. I liked the first set meal I had. The more expensive one, was not as good IMO.
Probably will NOT come back again.
We all really enjoyed the food and service, top notch, and I especially loved the deserts, so good I had both Churros AND the best chocolate mousse I have ever eaten.
Have dined here for lunch twice now, both times the meals were superb. They now have a dedicated "plant-based" section on the menu with good vegan options. The mushroom tacos are delicious!
I am really not sure why this place gets such high ratings? I went with my partner and we tried 3 different tacos. The tacos were soft and soggy and doubled up (2 soft taco shells per taco), which i didn't feel like they needed. The chicken was bland and had no sauce and the other 2 tacos were just ok, better as they had some sauce, but not great. I personally didn't like the herb parsley as the chosen herb for garnish in a Mexican taco - it is usually coriander and lime which goes down a treat with real Mexican flavours. Overall it was very underwhelming. The actual restaurant is a cool vibe and nicely laid out though.
Wow. Took my girlfriend here for her birthday and it did not disappoint. Food was absolutely sensational, the drinks were perfect, and the service was fast and efficient, what more could you possibly ask for?
