Hello,
I was here once in the Flinders Ranges National Park. One of the most beautiful parks in South Australia. The Flinders Chain and the Wilpena Pound are especially beautiful.
Not really recommended in summer, as temperatures can easily reach 40 degrees and more. Spring or is the best time to visit, definitely.

Loved my time at Ikara plenty of hiking recommend Mt Olsen Bagge, next time it will be St Mary’s Peak for me. Great campground, plenty of birds, helpful staff, IGA for all your food n camping gear as well as info centre with maps and fuel available as well. Good camp amenities limited camp kitchen. Lots of birds n wildlife as well. Many many sites however recommend to prebook.

Scenic views and worth the drive around the national park. Despite the views being almost the same after some time, there are a few nice lookout points to stop by.

Great walking trail to the lookout, some a bit challenging. However, in the end it is worth the climb.

Highly recommend visiting Flinders Rangers… if you can get to Brachina Gorge and camp, it’s an epic spot away from the crowds of Wilpina

Amazing park. So much to see and do. Great for all range of ages. Great short and longer walks within the park. Easy to get around with 4wd and loads of super great camp sights.

If you’re a photographer there are so many locations to visit. We host two photography tours a year and visit in June and September. Another beautiful part of Australia.

Even on an overcast day, the scenery was spectacular. We did almost all of the drives comfortably in one day. The roads were great - a little muddy due to the rain and the tracks thru the creeks posed no problems for 4WD. We were amazed at the landscapes, gorges and vegetation. One road was like being in the snowy mountains, the next was rock formations like Hamersley Gorge, then you had hills like the McDonnell Ranges. The gum trees were huge, majestic and the biggest we've seen in SA. There's some old ruins of past sheep stations. Loads of emus, kangaroos and birdlife.

Wilpena Pound is a great destination in itself, with walks as easy or as hard as you choose; but it is just the start. The national park covers a large area.
The public roads are free including the Moralana scenic drive, Brachina Gorge, Parachilna Gorge and Glass Gorge roads, stops and lookouts. Need to book camping sites and a pass is needed for the tracks, driving or walking.
The road is tarred from Hawker to Blinman, including the Wilpena Pound approach, also from Hawker to Parachilna and beyond. Dirt roads are reasonable but there are no bridges, all the seasonal creeks are forded.
At least the dust is soft, does not chew through the brake pads as on the Eyre peninsula.
Last time we visited it was early December and some tracks and walks were already closed for the summer season. Mobile coverage is bad to non-existent so a little bit of preparation and common sense goes a long way.
It is a vast and scenic expanse that does not stop to amaze even after the awe of the first have long worn off.

Very pretty and green, the rock formations are impressive. Resort is very well equiped with a good supermarket and nice accomodation.

Wilpena (aka Ikara) is a very beautiful place to camp and hike. I must have camped here at least 10 times over the years. St. Mary's peak is a great climb, but it's long so don't drink all your water atthr start. The weather out here can be unpredictable - be careful not to pitch a tent in a dry creek bed in case there is rain. One time I camped here and there was a strong weather warning. Our tent poles snapped due to the extremely strong winds and we couldn't stay. But when the weather is nice its amazing. There are lots of flies but not at high altitudes.

We did the St Mary's walk from the Rangers Station through the middle and then up to the top. It took us about 6 1/2 hours in total, and is a challenging walk if it's hot. Tip is to take plenty of water (at least 2 litres each person) and good walking shoes / boots with grip. As you near the top there is some climbing up, around and over large rocks so good shoes / boots are necessary. On the way down, there is some steep climbing / scaling down the rocks on the other side of the range, so take things slow - but enjoy the view. It's a great walk and we do it every time we go to the Flinders Ranges. It's a bit over 21 km's but well worth the effort and you sleep like a baby that night:)

This part of the Flinders Rangers. Such a stunning, beautiful and spiritual place. We had 5 days up here and could have stayed a month. Some really great things to see. I recommend taking the flight on the first day to get some perspective and some
Education on the area before you explore it more.
We had the best time and can’t wait to get back. Next time winter.

Absolutely love it up here. Great for camping, 4x4, hiking, exploring.

Serene, stunning, peaceful and aesthetically amazing for the novice or professional photographer.

Patchy phone coverage which is great if you want to escape the digital life. Make sure you have alternative communications if you intend to explore and need it for emergency purposes.

Fantastic during the cooler months. Lots to see and do including arkaroo rock, brachina gorge geological trail, blinman mine and more.

Highly recommended going to spot rock wallabies past 5pm in brachina, bring binoculars.

St Mary's peak atop Wilpena Pound is a must do hike with spectacular views with many smaller hikes all around the area

Always love it in and around the upper Flinders Ranges and surrounds. Highlights of course include Wilpena Pound, Rawnsley, Brachina Gorge, The Cazneaux Tree and host of great other landmarks and walks. FWD tracks, Flaura, Fauna something for everyone and every level of fitness. Little disappointed that St Mary's Peak out of bounds for climbing but made up for it by climbing Mt Ohlssen Bagge instead which I had never climbed before. Possibly get better views from pound from to there anyway. Had to go further north to check out the new Leigh Creek considering I had seen the old one in the late 70's. Pretty disturbed to see that has gone from a population of around 3000 to around 60. Virtual ghost town.

Beautiful landscape but the place is plagued by goats and you're not even allowed to hunt them.
