So when we arrived, the very stylish dressed and coiffured host was playing the boring old Sydney hospitality game, of ‘I hold the power attitude’ so completely ignored us for five minutes despite us being the only people waiting in front of her. I thought that rubbish had died years ago but sadly not.
We were seated and the space is really nice although when you head to the bathrooms you can see it is starting to show the signs of wear and tear. It is crazy busy so you can understand why.
The service on the floor was warm and friendly and pretty efficient on the whole. There were a couple of things that did let the service down a bit. One the waiter spilt my cocktail down the side of the glass and egg white foam all over the stem and base. He acknowledged he did it by instead of sitting out out just put it on the table so we had sticky drink on the table after that.
The other was one of the waiters put our dish on another table and walked away. The people at the table realized, then told her and she then brought it to us after working out her mistake. Maybe I’m picky but she had no idea it they had sneezed on it, touched the food etc.

The cocktails were brilliant, but the food was the biggest disappointment. And some dishes were sold out. We wanted the crunchy pork belly, and I know it said on the menu they have limited supply but to be sold out when you are at the beginning of the second sitting is not great. If you like this I guess you need to be in the first sitting.

The steamed dumplings were great and we thought we were in for a great treat with the rest of the food. Sadly it wasn’t to be.
Then the duck pancakes came, which were missing a pancake. We only had seven in the steamer and not eight (but hey accidents happen and they would be hard to count) but the duck was so bland and dry. It looked great and the skin had good crunch, but it had none of the splendid taste and succulent mouthfeel you expect from Chinese duck. It was so disappointing.

The pork knuckle in sweet and sour sauce was interesting and done as a pressed meat. It was fairly tasty on the whole. But the sauce was gluggy and a very one-dimensional in flavour profile.

The crab fried rice was overdone with the typhoon shelter crumb topping and overwhelmed the crab flavour. All I could seem to taste was the topping because they had put on way too much, and if I hadn’t ordered crab I wouldn’t know it was there.

Sadly I have to say Mr Wong didn’t live up to the expectation from the ‘hype’ or the experience you’d expect from a Merivale venue, and honestly for the price I would expect food that was better executed. If you want good Cantonese food from a Merivale venue, go to Queen Chow in Newtown. I think the Mr Wong crew need to head to their sister restaurant and see how it’s done. Or better still, for similar price on a menu they should send someone to Me Wah in Hobart to see what a similar price delivers in execution. We won’t be rushing back!

Cool place. Bad service. Food was sometimes great, more often than not though, way too oily and salty. Not bad per se, but definitely not worth the price of admission.

We came here for lunch (you need to book in advance) and were very pleasantly surprised by the great service.
We had great duck and king crab fried rice, amazing dim sum and they had a great selection of wines.
I will definitely be coming back for dinner, the venue is quite beautiful!
I can recommend!

Deliciousness isn't afraid of hidden gems. I found a grape variety, Pinot Noir, that suits my taste. I didn't want too many choices; I just wanted one flavor. Grape varieties can produce various flavors. In my glass, there were hints of sea salt, citrus zest, and subtle nuttiness. I enjoyed the sea salt flavor, along with a touch of fruity sweetness. This restaurant is run by Chinese owners, and their signature dish is Peking duck! Their marination is quite good, as many foreign roast duck restaurants excel in that regard. However, there's room for improvement in the crispy skin department. It seems the crispy batter might not have been prepared well, or perhaps Western diners aren't as fond of crispy duck skin. This is crucial for achieving the desired level of crispiness. Friends who enjoy roast goose and roast duck know that drying the duck or goose before roasting and ensuring the batter is crispy are essential. Dim sum is indeed a complex field, and this restaurant has successfully blended luxurious ingredients with Chinese cuisine, creating a unique Chinese-Western dining experience. The quality of a restaurant's seasonings and ingredients is something diners can discern, so when a restaurant puts in the effort, diners will notice and appreciate it.

Mr. Wong is something I always want to visit when I come to Sydney. Taste, atmosphere, and staff are great! It's a large portion, so it's best to share it with others or get it in half size

Very disappointed with Mr Wong. The food was average relative to the food at decent Chinese restaurants in Sydney (such as The Eight in Haymarket). Service was sloppy - half the dishes in our banquet were dumped on our table at once without any explanation, so there was barely any room left on the table while the food went cold. We had to ask for some to be removed and then new dishes brought later. For the price I believe it is reasonable to expect a lot better from Merrivale.

Great atmosphere but that's about it. Doesn't seem like the chef has ever tasted Chinese food, it all just tasted salty. The best way to describe the food is that it's been cooked by a person who has never even tried Asian food but said "I've seen pictures" and then cooked it with only local ingredients.
The price of the meal was crazy for what it was, especially how terrible it tasted.

It's best not to pretend you come to this restaurant for the food. I am not too bothered whether food is "authentic" or not, as long as it is tasty. I lived 7 years in Hong Kong, so I know for sure that the food is not authentic, except maybe in how it looks. But however you describe the restaurant's offerings, it's not very tasty. I feel a bit strongly about this because all these customers who have probably not been to Hong Kong go away with a false impression of what the food is like (when it is at its best). They have however created a great (very Western and nightclub cool) ambience, and I suppose that should be the reason why anyone comes here. Just a shame about the food.

Walking into Mr. Wongs you find a loud, bustling and dimness restaurant. If your on a first date I guess it's great as there are plenty of distractions incase your date isn't going so well.
The food overall is poor. The dumplings would have to be one of the best I've eaten but for half the price you can find the same quality at Cabravale. The King Crab corn soup was too salty. The King crab fried rice had way too many flavours (calm down). It was so intense I couldn't eat it.
I can't even remember what else was ordered (that's not good). At occasions I had to remind whoever floated by that I was still waiting on drinks. The wait staff were missing. Overall Mr Wongs is overrated.

A great place to eat, the quality of food is excellent as well. We enjoyed every second of our time here. Highly recommended.

Hits and misses.mostly hits. Great place for a family "occasion" or event.

Hits - service, kingfish sashimi, pepper beef and pork/prawn siu mai
Misses - XO pippis (no flavour and soggy crispy noodle base), charsiu (moist but the outside didn't have any caramelized bits).
Other dishes were ok.

Would leave 1 star if i could! I was turned away for not having my ID which was fine but it has been a week and no one has returned my email about my $202 deposit! So they've taken my money and not made an effort to contact me back! Extremely disappointed and just after the money the lady at the front told me would be fully refunded. Do better mr wong.

I loved it. Bit pricey but the dumplings were some of the best I have had. Especially the the lobster and caviar which was a special at the time. Wine list is about an inch thick, very pricey but the range is awesome. Sommelier was attentive but not overly pretentious and recommended excellent matches to dishes in all their price range. It’s typical Merivale. We got top service and was a great space to dine.

Had a great lunch banquet here. The food meets the expectation and the ambient is good in the context of fine dinning. While I personally don't think it's authentic in a sense of down-to-earth chinese dining (and you could find more authentic Chinese food at a different setting and at a far cheaper price but you just can't compare Apple to Orange), Mr Wong has found its own niche and its definitely up there along with hotel quality food you find at a Western hotel in Asia.
We had amazing food, drinks, and desert.

The drinks range is good where we could order from wine to even Tsing Tao (a great chinese pale lager beer)

Pretty amazed by the idea of an high end restaurant located at a hidden alleyway.

Impressed with the open kitchen, where you don't normally get to see from a typical chinese restaurants. I like the bathroom design more than the dinning area.

The service from the staff is what you would expect from a fine dinning restaurant too, pretty professional. Gotta miss the friendly chats from the pre covid days (now that they all wear masks and refrain from being too chatty).

Will come back and try more of their creative/ recommended dishes rather than getting typical dishes you can get from typical restaurants (the spicy wontons were a let down).

Food is great. However, there is $100 per person deposit which is non-refundable even if you try cancel 2 months before the booking. Its not fair for the consumer.

Literarily the best modern Chinese restaurant I’ve ever tried and that includes back home in Shanghai. It is very pricey though so expect to pay a lot but worth every dollar. Service is out of this world and the food was simply amazing. If you love trying new food, you have to come here.

What's with the $100 per person minimum spending? Does the business that desperate for the money now? It used to be one of our favourite restaurants but I guess we are not going to go back until they change this policy. To be honest we will probably spend $100 per person which we had on the previous visits. But we dont appreciate it when it become a MUST.

Okay this is one of my favourite restaurants in Australia. I've eaten here over a dozen times and the food never disappoints. The steamed dumplings and the crab fried rice are must haves.
We took a friend and she loved the decor and vibe of the place as well as the food!
Bookings alert!
Upside of the new system is ease of on-line without having to que up to get a time to return for your sitting
Downside is the non refundable $100 per person booking fee. It does come off your bill but if you are vegan/vegetarian you'll struggle unless you go big on your wine choice.
Personally I feel a deposit for no showing is reasonable and happily pay them, however without knowing a place I'd look elsewhere before dropping a hundred per person.
