Renters beware - this agency will knowingly try to make bogus (and unlawful) attempts to claim money from your bond.

I’ve been a renter in different properties for over 12 years, and never have I ever had an issue receiving my bond back - until McGrath.

When moving out, we were assigned Taylah, who turned out to be very unprofessional to work with. When there was a disagreement, instead of trying to understand or listen to us she was defensive and accusatory.

The most frustrating and demoralising thing about McGrath is that they know what the laws are, but still try to take advantage of tenants assuming they do not know their rights.

When we questioned Tylah as to why she was trying to take frivolous charges out of our bond, and that we know our rights as tenants and that they legally cannot charge us for what she was claiming — she simply stopped responding. We then had to lodge the bond claim ourselves directly to NSW Fair Trading.

Again, instead of approving or even trying to work with us, they just ran out the clock for 2 weeks until the bond was automatically released, which I can only assume was solely to inconvenience us.

I’m in a lucky enough position that I was able to get by for over 3 weeks after we moved out while they held my bond, and that I had the time to push back on their unlawful attempts to get money out of us. But it does make me concerned for those who aren't as fortunate — people who may need that bond to secure a new place to live, or who maybe don't understand English well, or aren't aware of their rights as tenants. Based on my experience, I would not be surprised if they are being taken advantage of by McGrath.

It’s a shame because they had generally been ok agents during our tenancy, but true colours showed upon moving out.

The team at McGrath have been very helpful in my search for a property. They have a quick response time and are clear and concise with what they require. Would highly recommend.

Landlords beware. No transparency, hidden fees and lies. Very poor experience and constant changeover of property managers leaves owners out of pocket. Absolute scammers. Avoid at all costs.
