Hyde Park Barracks Museum reviews
64Great display. The wifi audio tours sometimes got confused, but overall, a fantastic experience. Loved the tattoo's idea
Truely a hidden gem. Lived in sydney for 20 years and my first visit last weekend
Truely a beautiful, fascinating and eye opening experience
The stories and exhibits are world class
A must do activity for visitors and sydney siders!
Really great museum. Really good immersion of the time of the convicts at the early years of the creation of Australia. A must do when you are in Sydney.
Absolutely loved it. Well set out, the models are amazing. Great audio commentary. Highly recommended

The guide was detailed and fun and has been very inclusive traveling along with a young child and a stroller.
Amazing trip down the long path of history.every nation has its history and this is the story of the convicts and the orphan women who helped build the city of Sydney. I loved the audio tour and learned so much about this history of Australia, which is a lot richer than the outback stories portrayed by Hollywood!
. We ate some pickles and they were good. The walls were creepy because they made weird noises. The employes were also very rude and burped and farted by me. They tried to eat me! ͡ (° ͜ʖ ͡°)
My visit was Australia day 2019. The staff were very helpful and I loved the archeological artifacts. I also loved the boxes with personal items belonging to the Irish Orphans. I think it is a bit like Old Sydney Town but the real one.
Loved visiting this place. Takes you back in time. They have a kids activity sheet which was great fun to do by finding the "rats" and completing the activity. The kid learned a lot and had a lot of fun doing it. We will be back to visit again soon
If you have an hour or two to spend in Sydney, this is a fascinating museum. It shows the harshness of corrections during the early 1800s as convicts from throughout the Commonwealth were sent to Sydney. The Hyde Park Barracks Museum is a brick building and compound designed by convict architect Francis Greenway between 1818 and 1819; originally built at the head of Macquarie Street to house convict men and boys.
Fascinating tour around a meticulously restored site. The audio guide is free and well worth using. Allow a couple of hours for all three floors
Well set out with stuff to look at, things to read and bits for kids. An excellent insight into its various uses. Found a story of one as sister passage immigrant who had come to Australia the year before our relatives but on the same boat.
Somewhat of a whitewash of the convict experience. But if you go in with a skeptical eye, there is much to learm by reading between the lines.
Fantastic old barracks converted into a museum. Makes you realize just how good we got it these days.
Very interesting place. It certainly gives you that feeling of what life was like at the start of the colonial Australia and also how the original Australian was treated. Totally recommend you visit.
The tour could have been a bit better if they had the staff to talk about the rooms. There is a radio you can listen to to describe the rooms but it’s not personal and you can’t ask questions. The front desk staff were friendly.
Superbly researched and presented history of how firstly convicts then free emigrants were treated on arrival in Sydney. A wonderful Vulliamy clock.
Lots to read and see. Some great interactive digital screens and exhibits which adds interest for school aged students.
11 rooms across 3 levels accessed by stairs; therefore not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Pack some snacks and water in a backpack to have outside in the sunny yard on a bench under the shade of the trees; it was a nice way to end our visit and absorb the atmosphere of the buildings and imagine life as a convict.
Take the tour or request for the audio guide. You cannot miss this when in Sydney. The barracks play a very important role in convict history of the land. Prepare to spend at least 1.5 hours here to understand and relive the era. The artifacts and the preservation will leave you wanting for more. Exhibits are interactive. Highly recommended. $12 for adults. Concession tickets available.
