Overacted first person amateur theater type audio tour which is super slow and you have no control.and no idea if you're about to take half a step too far too far, at which point the opaque orange device just automatically switches to the next story and good luck trying to get back to where you were. This was once a very interesting, informative museum, now it's basically the History Channel in PG. Great if that's what you're after. The site itself is fascinating.maybe get your own book or other history and take it with you if theatrics is not your bag

The audio tour is just a shambles! As a mum with 2 little ones it was so frustrating to try and get around the barracks with headphones on and not being able to communicate easily. What happened to having things for people to read

An immersive experience as each person has their own headset with information linked to different rooms or exhibits. Very informative and interesting.

Very interesting. Although I don't agree with the narrative, it wasn't fair to expect the settlers to understand and respect indigenous culture on short notice when they were Just trying to survive, and were doing a good thing, building stuff to survive in and laying the foundations of now Sydney with structures. The british punished settlers for killing aboriginals by execution if it wasn't a case of self defence and preservation, so the british governments intentions were good! They unfairly get a bad name simply because of repeat offenders and people not respecting the law of Britain, which now Australia inherited. I also don't agree with calling aboriginals first nations people, its another woke initiative to make people feel unproud of their history, we don't want that. Australia became a nation under the constitution uk1900 on 1St January 1901! Indigenous walked here without law from Africa and India!

Fantastic! State of the Art, immersive, engaging, must see exhibition! It will change the way you look at Sydney's past. Photos just don't do it justice. Just go!

Went here looking for some muscle on a job. No real soldiers, let alone mercenaries. But it was still a lovely spot and defs worth a visit.

Amazing place and so cool free audio guide, so easy to use and makes your experience much more interesting even for kids, so much about history and Sydney developing, definitely at least top 10 places to visit in Sydney!

Good summary of early settlers. Easy to get around and space nicely. Some displays a little political though.

One of the best historic tours I have even taken. My friend have travelled to many European countries and visited many exhibitions like this but, he said this one was very neatly organised. The audio guide was perfectly synchronised. The sound effects, the way they narrate, the background score and the genuine level of emotions. It was one of the best experience and was like watching a movie. I was shocked to understand the level of history behind the city. This is a must visit place and I am sure you will find it interesting. The staff were friendly and offered us student discount as well.

Great detail of the good, and not so good, history of early English settlement and the barracks.

For lovers of early Australian history a visit is a must. An immersive audio tour places you right amongst the convicts and poor wretches who suffered transportation.

This world heritage site is the ultimate museum for exploring convict history, and it's legacy to Sydney and Australia's Indigenous peoples.

Beautifully conserved by Sydney Living Museums, the site has high tech audio tour system which results in a modern immersed soundscape experience. Whether you're a tourist or a lifelong Sydneysider, it is a must to visit this gem of Australia's history.

Be warned that it is a very individual experience, and if you go as a group the sound proof headphones won't make it the most social experience.

A great place to explore history for my two older kids in years 2 and 4. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Very important as one of the original structures of Old Sydney Town. Contains many interesting artefacts. Do note that much of the experience is through audio headsets with only a few instances of written information, so hopefully technology works when you visit

Really excellent insight into Sydney’s past. The way it was done was very entertaining and even our 9 year old didn’t lose interest.

The exhibitions are well designed and the staff were all lovely and very helpful. The main way to explore the site is through a self-guided audio tour which starts/stops automatically as you move through the space. I found the functioning of the tour very frustrating as it would often cut out or not start at all in certain rooms. The content of the tour was very basic. If you attened an Australian school and had lessons on convict/colonial history it's unlikely you will learn anything new.

Loved it. Very well put together and a great way to appreciate the people of our colonial past without forgetting the impacts on the Aboriginal people
