Heartwood Creative Woodworking reviews
54Great experience, Carol and Stuart were really helpful and encouraging, they gave us amazing instructions, which helped me develop techniques. Really enjoyable experience, great workshop. Carol also followed up with really useful information as to where they source they tools and how to continue spoon carving at home.
Just completed 8x8 intro course and I thoroughly (x100) enjoyed every minute of it. Stuart and Carol are so passionate and nurturing and their sense of care and eye for technical and creative detail truely embodied the "Heart" within Heartwood. I am in total awe for every single aspect of the Craft and hope I can take other courses in future. I have renewed sense of appreciation for wood crafting and will remember these things every time I look at the pieces we created during the course. I highly recommend Heartwood. It wasn't just the time and experience during the 8 weeks, it was a journey that I will treasure for life.
My children bought the Steam Bending / Shaker box making course as a birthday present for their father. He was looking forward to it but ultimately couldn’t make it due to the floods in The Hawkesbury. The SES had estimated that the road would be open on time, but that didn’t happen. So, the afternoon before the course my husband sent a message explaining the situation. He would accept a voucher for a different course. The only answer he got was that the $185 would not be reimbursed. I find it appalling. That is a lot of money for my children. We’ve have had trouble enough with floods, it wasn’t a choice. We have a very poor opinion of the people running these courses.
Highly recommend Heartwood Creative to anyone interested in Woodworking. They cater for a range of experience - and as a complete novice, I was so well supported. The parking is great, the space great, the set up is well organised and comfortable - right down to the morning tea! Stuart and Carol are just amazing!
I took the 8x8 introductory course in October 2021 with Stuart and Niall as the main instructors, with help from Carol, all of whom are great teachers and lovely people. It was an excellent course and a great introduction to woodworking hand tools, machines and techniques.
As striking as the obvious woodworking skill and talent of the instructors is the level of thought and care that has gone into designing the course itself - there is never an idle moment and everyone arrives at the end of the course with two beautiful finished and personalised items (no mean feat given everyone moves through the course at their own pace). It is also an ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon, so much so I am now doing the follow-up course. I highly recommend it!
I have done a spoon carving one day class with my friend and it was absolutely amazing time to learn and make my own spoon.
Carol and Stuart are really nice and passionate about what they do.
This class gave me enlightenment that I really like to learn more about wood and wood working and also gave me a big opportunity and confidence to learn a new things.
I really appreciate it that I have had this class with both of you!
Thank you:)
(Also that peppermint tea and bread with icing sugar can not forgettable)
I have participated in the intro course, table making workshop and next the follow on course. Stuart, Carol & the various instructors are skilled with their understanding woodworking, attentive to every student & their genuine excitement for ‘making’ creates a lovely learning atmosphere. Highly recommend to any prospective woodworker.
I had a great time completing the introductory course, I highly recommend for anyone considering it. The course was thoroughly planned and all the tools and machinery used are very well maintained. Carol and Stuart are both passionate and knowledgeable woodworkers which made the weekend a great learning experience and I always felt safe. It exceeded my expectations that were already high!
Stuart and Carol were my instructors for the 2 day table-making workshop; they are both excellent and very patient teachers and their passion always evident. The class was relaxed and well paced; the workshop professionally laid out, organized, incredibly clean and attention to safety paramount. I'm a complete novice; I have never handled a band saw, table saw, or router before and was a little intimidated when I first saw all the equipment. But Stuart and Carol have gone to great lengths to have all safety measures in place, and supervised the whole time. I felt incredibly safe and thrilled to learn the use of the power tools. I enjoyed learning about wood and how it behaves, right down to honing my sanding skills (Carol is a strict taskmaster there!). I'm proud of what I achieved in those 2 days; my little table is a work of art thanks to Stuart's skill in designing it and experience in his craft. The term courses are in demand so I am on the waiting list of those wanting to learn more. I recommend Heartwood to anyone, whatever your skill level.
I just completed the 2 day table making course - what a great experience!
Everyone, regardless of prior woodworking experience learns something and takes home a beautiful completed piece of furniture. The table has some lovely curves and tapers in an attractive timber, ready for you to add the final finish.
The Heartwood team of Stuart, Carol and Darren make you feel welcome and help with every step. Stuart has put so much thought and effort into the design of the course, the process, safety, and of the furniture itself.
Thoroughly recommended
It was first time to join the wood spoon carving course. This course was fantastic and funny! The instructors Carol and Stuart Faulkner was so kind and taough me well! 1000000% recommend!
The two-day table making course was brilliant. Stewart, Carol and Rhys were such generous and knowledgeable teachers who all struck a great balance of closely guiding and assisting class participants through each step of the table-making process, while also letting everyone take ownership of their own work. I felt really proud of the final table, and with Stewart, Carol and Rhys' attentive, friendly instruction, it felt like we were all guaranteed to walk away with something we were very happy with, regardless of previous woodworking experience. It felt very covid-safe too.
I've just finished the 8x8 Intro to Woodworking! A big shout out to Rhys, Shane and Stuart for making this course such a great event. I enjoyed every minute. I loved their passion for the craft, their amazing knowledge and their way to teach things. I will be back again soon!
I've just completed the first intro course (8 weeks) which was such a great experience! I initially felt like learning woodworking was much too complex and out of reach, but the 8 weeks with the great instructors I had (Niell, Dom, Stuart, Carol) gave me a basic understanding to so many parts of it. Every week, I learnt several new things and got to use an excellent variety of hand tools and machinery. The course progressed at the perfect pace: always something new to do, but still with just enough time to fix mistakes or practise a particular skill. Best of all, I loved the two projects I end up creating (cheese board, and a beautiful box).
In short: friendly environment, passionate teachers, and an abundance of new skills.
For anyone who loves learning how to work with wood, Heartwood Creative Woodworking in Marrickville, is without a doubt the place where you should consider going to learn. Very passionate teachers, very experienced and professionals, exiting projects to build and with all the necessary equipment at hand. I highly recommend it if you are serious about learning. 10/10
As a complete beginner this course was perfect! An introduction to hand tools and some of the power tools (of course under Stuarts close supervision!) We were guided every step of the way whilst having creative licence. I was so pleased with my finished products and have signed up to do the table course. Would happily recommend Stuart, Darren and Carol's classes!
The workshops offered by Heartwood Creative are a must! We recently completed the Table Course and had a fantastic time learning from the amazing and knowledgeable instructors - Stuart, Carol & Daren. We got to select the type of wood, cut and shape all the pieces, learn how to sand and produced an amazing looking side table. The instructors are super passionate and knowledgeable. They really took time to explain everything and it really felt like I learned a lot and definitely recommend this experience to everyone!
There's some experiences in life that we know we'll never forget. The MyBench course with Heartwood is one of those. The bench is designed so perfectly, from dog holes, sliding deadman, flush front, to heavy and solid top and legs. You can just tell the amount of thought and functionality Stuart has put into this bench.
But what makes this bench extra special is that you get to build it. I, along with Stuart's help, built this bench, and that yields an unmeasurable amount of bliss. I'm so happy with this bench, and one day, I will make great furniture and instruments with it. Thank you Heartwood:)
Summary: amazing bench + unforgettable experience = worth it.
Great space and very friendly and knowledgeable teachers! Did the one day spoon carving workshop and will definitely be going back to learn more woodworking skills!
I've recently finished my 8x8 Intro class and enjoyed every bit of it. My partner and I also went in for the spoon Carving class and had an amazing time learning and making! The team is wonderful and the trainers are some of the best you will have the chance to learn from, the facilities are top notch and you get a chance to play with all the latest tools out there and learn how they operate properly. If you have a passion for wood and want to learn and play, this institute provides you with everything you need to start and grow. Special thanks to Stu, Carol, Matt and Sebastian for all the time and effort put into the training.
