Gundog Estate reviews
58Go to Usher Tinkler next door. Old school winery with strong local community feel - pleasant service but wines just didn't hit the mark
Lovely tasting room. The staff were great and the range of wines was impressive. Quality exceptional.
Lovely cellar door with excellent staff. Under the new COVID rules, we didn't book but they managed to fit us in (all properly socially distant). We ordered some wine but on return to Sydney, we discovered they had packed in a couple of incorrect bottles. I called them and they sent the correct bottles and these were received in a day via post. Excellent service and great selection of wines to try.
Fabulous staff and the wine is an absolute knock out. Stopped by chance and now we always come back. Absolutely a favourite.
Pretty good wines, but extremely disappointed with the service.
I had booked for a group of 9 over the long weekend, and we were told to arrive on-time, as we would have 45mins for tasting, and then they would have 15mins to sanitise our table before the next group (COVID-19 has meant limited numbers @ the Cellar Door, and increased cleaning routines).
We arrived at our allocated time, 1pm, and were told by the friendly hostess that they were just cleaning our table, and that they would be done shortly - say 10mins. Not to worry, these things happen. We walk around for 10mins, and then return. We were then told they were still cleaning, and that they wouldn't be much longer. This time, we loiter in the car park. At 1: 25pm, my husband goes up and asks what the story is. By this stage, we are all understandably a little frustrated, as we booked so as to avoid waiting. The hostess then tells us that the group before us are still inside, and are finishing their tasting, and that the whole day has been pushed back because of a delay with the first group of the day. The fact that we were lied to multiple times definitely added to the sour taste of the whole experience.
At 1: 35pm we sit down, and have our first tasting. It appeared as though they were understaffed, as the many staff were floundering to split their time between the many groups. We were basically ignored throughout our entire tasting, with another group who entered 5mins prior to us lapping up the majority of our host's attention.
By 2: 30pm, we were finished what ended up being a very average experience, despite the generally nice wine. We were not apologised to because of the delay, nor were we offered to have the tasting fee waived (which would have improved our mood and thus the experience). All in all, very disappointed, and will likely not return.
The wild Semillon is an absolute knock out, Gun Dog cannot be missed when you're in the hunter. A knowledgable crew with super intriguing wines.
Back in July 2014 I had noticed Gundog next door on our way into Lindeman’s, so we went over there. 11 am started with Nick, the assistant wine maker, to go through their selections and had a wonderful time talking, comparing and understanding their wines. Thoroughly enjoyed their Wild Semillon wine, the Rose, their Shiraz selection and the Muscat fortified wine. Bought a bottle of the Muscat. Finished off with an excellent Espresso coffee.
We had a great experience here with the lady at Gundog. At just 9,000 cases a year this is a boutquey cellar door that has a lovely feel to it. We bought some shiraz and also some beers new to the range to see what they're like. A great time had by my parents and it is conveniently close to Usher Tinkler next door, and Baume next door for food at Ben Ean.
Fantastic wines, best cellar door experience in the Hunter, great staff - an absolute must visit, and do yourself a favour and join the wine club so you can keep enjoying.
Excellent, personable staff and good wine makes up for a bit less ambience than the vineyards. Visited twice on last tour and would recommend.
Amazing wines. They have a great selections to chose from and I really enjoyed the Semillons.
Unfortunately we had a disappointing service. I understand they had one staff down, however it took 1 hour to taste 4 wines, before we (my sister and myself) decided to leave the tasting and pay for what we wanted. We were ignored by two staff members, who tended to the two couples beside us. Both the couples went through the full tasting in 20mins. I would recommend coming back if they’re at full capacity.
Cracking little winery. Some great reds.
Go next door and get wines AND meats at the old Church that has been done up.
If you are in the Hunter on a limited time, don't make this a must. However, if you have some time, give it a crack.
I think they do a charge on tastings now.
Had an amazing afternoon wine tasting at gundog estate. The highlight of our Hunter Valley experience. Liz was the best.
Amazing winery! One of the best experiences I have had. The staff are supper friendly and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend!
Excellent spot for a tasting. Friendly staff who love to have a laugh with great wines - try the muscat!
Lovely winery - Jane was super friendly and talkative. Had a great tasting session. Wines were very nice and drinkable but, for us, nothing particularly special. Still worth a visit.
This is simply the best cellar door in the Hunter. I liked the staff, the wine on offer and the extras with food, coffee and beer available. It would also be amongst the best in Australia.
Great spot, brilliant staff, fantastic wine. My favourite is the Muscat, best Muscat I have ever tasted!
Definitely my favourite spot in the Hunter, highly recommend!
