The Groper & His Wife reviews
57Has clearly changed hands and they’ve lost their way. What a shame. Great value portion of chips but unfortunately overcooked in dirty oil and dry. Shockingly slow service!
The original fresh fish is matched with the crispy batter outside, which makes the taste just right. We came to dinner at 5pm, and with the beautiful scenery, we enjoyed the amazing meal.
There is a variety of fish to choose from and it comes in generous servings. Good choice with friends.
Came here for Friday fish and chips with my kids and was not disappointed! Great service and chips cooked to perfection.
Really great menu variety with loads of options! I love how the menu has a choice between affordable fish and fresh fish that is more high end. We also love the homemade salads! Definitely my family’s first choice for fish and chips.
ORDER 20 MINUTES LATE. SMALL PIECE OF GRILLED SNAPPER WOULD NOT FEED MY CAT. GAVE ME SQUID RINGS INSTEAD OF SEA SCALLOPS & POTATO SCALLOPS NOT COOKED. THIS SHOP HAS GONE DOWNHILL & I WILL NOT BE GOING THERE AGAIN.
4pm on a Saturday, no customers, four or five employees idly standing around and you can't answer the phone? No Sabroso on hand and then can't even get it right with a basic request about salad dressing. Time to try elsewhere.
I used to sing the praises of the Groper as the most deluxe fish with chips to die for but not any more. I had dinner tonight and my meal came out very quickly, far too quickly to have been cooked fresh. It looked and tasted as if it had been lying around and was just heated up. The chips were overcooked and dry and the fish came out in pieces that looked as if it been dropped and gathered together and put roughly on the top of the chips like a broken jigsaw. The fish was dry too and overcooked. Such a disappointing experience. It’s pizza for me from the shop next door next time.
Waited 70 minutes for family feast, to be told that our order was lost. Never coming back again
When I came here, the EFTPOS machine wasn’t working, so it was a hassle to get cash to pay for the food. I ordered the Fisherman’s Basket, which has a bit of everything in it. The wait time was a bit long, but I think it was worth it. The food tasted great, but was quite greasy.
Wish I’d read recent reviews before ordering. Tonight we ordered from the counter and waited, yet fish came out dry, chips were a bit soggy, dim sim had no crunch.
Super disappointed considering my parents loved this place last summer and the website suggested they’d won plenty of awards.
We placed a family order. My order was Hake and chips. The chips were nice. The Hake was mostly deep fried batter with nothing inside. Not impressed.
Only gets 1 star because I'm not sure you can choose 0. Inedible chips. Even our 2 and 4 year olds turned their noses up. Thankful we got a pineapple fritter as it was the only moisture in the whole meal. Practically no customers on a Thursday night and still couldn't get the order right either.
I don't normally buy my Fish and Chips from The Groper and His Wife, however, tonight I did and what a disappointment. This small amount for $20 was a disgrace. I couldn't believe my eyes. I definitely won't be going back despite living just around the corner, I will continue going to Woodlands Fish and Chips even though its a couple of suburbs away, at least your guaranteed a decent serve and a fabulous meal.
Very overpriced, very slow and very small portions. I have been to this place a couple of times over the years and have never really been impressed. Today I was quite disappointed. We ordered fish and chips which took 40 odd minutes to cook, the portions were barely enough to feed a small child nevermind an adult. The amount of chips they gave us to feed 5 people was probably enough to feed 2? $93.50 could have been spent a lot better than in the groper and his wife. How these places survive is beyond me. Won’t be returning.
This fish and chip shop is perfectly located in the affluent suburb of City Beach and I imagine caters for it wealthy, Range Rover driving, investment bankers who like to one-up each other by over paying for everything. We ordered a family portion for five people for $70 and, while it was high quality, found the portions to be meagre, leaving everyone hungry and disappointed. This is a sharp contrast to the fish & chips around the corner where a $70 spend will buy enough food for 10 people, and there will be leftovers.
Value is what you get, price is what you pay, and The Groper fails to deliver.
Very slow service! Waited 40 minutes for fish and chips with two hungry kids. Ordered a side salad with mine and was given just a pile of chickpeas. When I asked where the side salad it, they said that is it it's overpriced and wasn't worth the wait.
The food here is amazing would 10/10 go here again the customer service is great and everyone there is so nice and always has a smile on there face
I haven’t been back here in a while and a lazy drive home from Cottesloe we had to call in! However I was so disappointed, firstly I felt like an inconvenience to the server, they ran out of fish burgers so I settled for the $20 snapper and chips. The fish was so dry (fresh more like frozen) and well over cooked, the chips were fine - but I came away feeling really let down.
I use to rave about this shop - unlikely to do so again
Extremely disappointed with our experience here. We placed a take away order and waited 40 minutes for fish and chips that was cold and stale tasting. We weren’t informed that it’d be a 40 minute wait when we placed the order. Worst of all was the level of hygiene. Several staff members, including those cooking the food, had their face masks pulled down below their mouths. Oily, overpriced and unclean - strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant and going somewhere else.
