Cullen Wines reviews
60 My wife and I are visiting from Sydney and booked a few special places to celebrate our wedding anniversary (and first trip since covid first hit) we were super excited to dine here at Cullen after reading through reviews online and taking a look at the sample menus. The front of house (wine tasting crew) were super friendly and welcoming but unfortunately the subsequent degustation menu did not match. Being a 2 hat restaurant we came in expecting a level of service you would find at other similar venues around Australia. When each course was dropped there was no explanation of what was on the plate or how it was prepared eg. “this is your first duck Rillette course”. When we got to the mains it was such a let down. My wife ordered the fish of the day (groper) and I had the wagyu beef. The fish came out overdone and was rubbery and I was given a butter knife for my steak! I couldn’t flag anyone down to ask for a knife so I gave it a shot — ended up pulling the beef apart with a butter knife and fork. When the waiter came back and asked how the food was, we usually don’t complain and say we loved it but this time we thought it was worth passing on the feedback. The waiter said thanks for the feedback (assume it was never passed on). Would have loved to see someone from the kitchen and hear our feedback on how they can improve.
Better restaurants out there in Margaret river (we went to a few others that were mind blowing)
If you expect a 2 hat fine dining experience, forget about it. The presentation of the food, taste, quality, decoration of the restaurant and the service, NONE OF THESE MATCHES THE TWO HATS! The most disappointing dining experience in the region, come on guys! If you have the money to spend on your marketing to get two hats, can’t you take the whole dining experience a bit more serious?
We stopped by Cullen during a recent trip to Margaret River region. We were staying at Cape Lodge and decided to visit some local wineries. One of the real highlights was Cullen’s. We were greeted by and attended to by Marco. He provided one of the best wine tasting experiences yet. Very knowledgable about the wines and the winery and its history. The wines we tasted were very good. Marco suggested we consider the premium tasting package, which we did, and were not disappointed. Ended up purchasing some bottles and the cost of the tasting was deducted. I highly recommended a stop by Cullen if you are in the area, and ask for Marco.
Two hats restaurant!?
It’s the one of “unforgettable experience”in the region, although it has the most reputable wines.
Staff: Obviously they are not very interested in their job or wines.
Food: Served a rock-hard bread and claimed it as entry, I would imaging any fine dining restaurant serve this to their customer.
Main: I would not like to comment on it at all.
Matching wine: for all back vintage wines, it’s either matching the food or drinking beautifully by itself. I would refer them as “let’s get rid of our obsolete stocks” strategy.
Very disappointed, food and wine
Excellent set menu - the Wagyu beef in particular was delicious. Great wines and wonderful service.
Cape Discovery Wine Tours transfered Kevin for lunch. His group highly reccommend having lunch.
Cullen is known for its wine, but deserves as much praise for the food. Beautiful outlook, this is the place for lunch in Margaret river.
The food here was yummy but a bit difficult if you have dietary restrictions. My partner and I are veggo and the options we had we’re not much cheaper than the meat options, definitely not as filling either. Tastey food but not as tastey as you’d expect for that price point. I was a bit underwhelmed. The wines were exxy too, but pretty good.
My partner and I felt a bit judged by some of the wait staff - not sure if we were under dressed or if it was clear we on a budget and this changed their attitudes towards us? We were just not getting eye contact and when we asked questions about the menu, we got really vague unhelpful answers - very different to how we saw them treat other people there. Most of the other staff were great though.
Beautiful location and ambience. You need a car to get here.
We had lunch here today and I'm struggling to believe that the restaurant has been awarded 2 hats. The girl who seated us seemed to be greatly inconvenienced by our presence, no welcoming smile or greeting; in hindsight we should have left and spent our $94 elsewhere.
Staff are rude. We had a $30 wine tasting outside on the tables and before we could finish we were advised by the staff that we needed to move our belongings and unfinished glasses of wine as the table was actually reserved. The entire place was empty, we moved and for the duration we were there nobody sat at the table we were sitting at. Very poor service, I would expect as a paying customer sitting where they seated us we could at least finish our drinks.
Terrible service and $85 for an unsatisfying and ordinary two course set menu is taking liberties.
Awesome winery where things are done with care from the harvest, where grape pickers are respected in every possible way. The best vineyard I have picked among many. Thank you Matt.
Blown away by the customer service here. The staff were really busy over this period and they continued to show five star service and really made our experience special. The octopus dish and the Malbec were delicious! What a winery.
Unfortunately our $190 lunch left a bit to be desired; food unseasoned (esp confit duck) and service left wine glasses empty and then on asking was advised glasses 2x $80 only to discover price at finalizing the bill, without condolences. Positives was the amazing host, and the very good heirloom tomato salad and pet nat rose tasting. Three stars possible but currently feeling dismayed.
High quality food however dishes are not as interesting or flavoursome as they used to be. The dishes used to be stunning in terms of taste and presentation but that was not the case today. We visit the region every summer and this was one of our favourite restaurants, having dined here six years in a row. Unfortunately today's experience was disappointing.
Lovely food, lovely staff and great venue. Both wines chosen at our table were great! We will certainly go back.
The food was average and over priced for what it was (and I’m not tight when it comes to food and spending). The service was slow but that’s to be expected when you’re dining in a rural environment.
Very limited options
Stunning food. Beautiful view. Very knowledgable waitress. 100% recommend. Lamb & pumpkin dish
Beautiful vineyard, beautiful Chardonnay! 2017 Cullen amber wine is a must try, interesting in an awesome way!
The Cullen's gets a 4 star simply because of their conservation efforts and their sustainability and biodynamic initiatives. I thought there was a district flavour of their wines in a good way.
Unfortunately, however, their 2 hatted restaurant failed to live up to the hype. It felt as though the chef generally knew what he was doing but temporarily got distracted. Organic or not, some of the flavour combinations were quite adventurous, for the lack of a better word.
Overall, there are still enough reasons to pay these guys a visit whilst in Margaret River.
