The Oak & Anchor Hotel reviews
48Lovely beers but none on tap! Great gin also! Only had drinks here in the bar downstairs which I had a great time but the wife wasn’t too happy that I had to take out a mortgage to have a coupla cans with the lads. Unfortunately my kids have not eaten in days after I consumed two bottles of nitro stout but nonetheless lovely place with nice staff! Will come back after I secure a higher paying job.
Food was delicious, good portion sizes! Drinks menu is extensive, would be beneficial to add a few beers on tap.
Excellent food, beautiful restaurant and great atmosphere. Fantastic set menu and Ally and her staff looked after us wonderfully while serving a full restaurant. Would highly recommend
My fiancé and I stayed here and also had dinner at the hotel. We stayed in the Beau suite and the room was stunning, lovely soft bed, and a wonderful bathtub. I would highly recommend it as a place to stay! The service at the restaurant was perfect; warm and attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and also local attractions. We had the chefs menu which was delicious and generously portioned. My only point of feedback was that I felt the beef cheeks (cooked to soft perfection) could have done with fewer garnishes and more seasoning in the purée (normally I would not even have mentioned this but there was no salt/pepper on the table so I couldn’t fix it myself). Would highly recommend for your stay in Port Fairy!
Dinner in the courtyard - complete with open fireplace in this beautifully restored building - is a must! We had the two-course meal & it was delicious. Service was excellent - very friendly & attentive without being over the top - everything we could ask for to ease us into the port fairy folk festival swing!
Had an event there for my 40th with 70 guests. Great venue, great atmosphere, great food. Staff were all excellent and friendly, made it a great night. Thanks very much!
The most disappointing dinner I had in long time! The service was very disappointing, the calamari was very salty! Let's say the waitress needs people's opinions to be addressed seriously! Very disappointing!
I personally had to go and thank the chef myself! The food was amazing, beautifully balanced and delicious. The wait staff girls also made our night, the vibe from there friendliness and happy faces also made it such an enjoyable experience. The building itself is also something not to be missed. We will always visit Oak & Anchor on a trip to Port Fairy.
One more thing/ PF secret is out- the hole in the wall produces the best rhubarb pastry I’ve ever had and the coffee is… yep amazing!
On Sunday 13 March my wife and I had the shared platter for dinner. The food was excellent, but the quantities were small we felt. Lovely hotel with nice ambience, although we were placed in a corner being the band that was playing outside. So not a nice vista. Yes, we would visit again and give it another chance. Staff were also very accommodating.
Lovely atmosphere, however, we were slightly disappointed with the food. The lunch menu options were limited and fairly average in taste. They forgot some parts of the dishes and ran out of some key ingredients (booked for 12: 30 pm). Staff were nice, would probably give it another go in future.
Loved staying at the Oak and Anchor Hotel! We stayed in the Dusty suite. It was luxurious, beautiful and comfortable, with everything we needed.
Outstanding experience! From booking with the accomodation Manager to all the staff at the restaurant. The lulubelle Room is spacious, beautifully decorated and very clean. Definitely coming back here
Love it
A great night out in a fabulous pub with simply incredible, friendly, knowledgeable staff. And the food - OMG, words fail me - excellently, deliciously brilliant. Must mention the staff again - amazing. If I could I would go every week, but I live in another state, so I can't. I will be back.
As usual, provides great coffee and a great environment. The girls are always extremely friendly and courteous.
Myself and my wife stayed in a suite here and it was magnificent. From the moment we opened the door we could see the care and effort that had gone into making the stay special. The room was clean and well equipped. There is also an outside beer garden and restaurant where we had a nice meal - the chef went to added lengths to accommodate dietary requirements which was also much appreciated.
We will be back and would recommend Oak and Anchor as the place to stay when visiting Port Fairy.
We pre booked our dinner at the Oak and anchor from away to ensure it was available. Had the set $65 meal and it was lovely. Friendly and efficient service and the 5 courses were a nice size and beautifully cooked. Good selection of wines that were not over priced. The hotel staff were Covid aware and the necessary precautions were taken. Would certainly recommend this venue but book ahead for weekends.
Lovely, modern, beautifully renovated studio suite with open styled bathroom. On the end of Bank St which is very walkable to all the shops and restaurants. I suggest making reservations for the popular restaurants otherwise it’ll be booked out in advance.
Comfortable bed. Heating and cooling system worked well. Has a bath that fits one comfortably, and two (smaller sized person) at a stretch.
Had issues with hot water system though. First night, filled the bathtub. However there wasn’t enough hot water for continuous flow - so the bath was lukewarm. Same goes with the shower - had cold water intermittently, took some time before hot water was running again. Raised the issue the next day, with no real solution, but second night had more hot water during off peak hours which was continuous but not super hot temperature (probably temperature controlled to prevent scalds?) - so probably will be an issue if it’s a full house (and everyone is using during peak hours). Oh, the tapware is installed differently from what one would expect.turn clockwise for hot water and vice versa.
Had a complimentary breakfast and beverage voucher which was great! Loved it. Port Fairy water is quite hard, so perhaps bring bottled water if that’s an issue.
Very disappointed with a few aspects of my meal here.
1) we booked a table for 8 for a family lunch after being reunited after years apart. We were given 2 tables of 4 so we were not all able to talk. It would have been appreciated if someone had called to let us know that would be the seating arrangement OR if you do not have capacity for a booking of 8, don’t accept it.
2) the menu is VERY different to the menu which is on their website. Why?
3) I ordered the Korean fried chicken burger which was meant to have kimchi and a slaw. The chicken was not fried and the burger did not have kimchi. After I asked why there was no kimchi, I was told they were out of kimchi and the girl at the front counter was unaware of this before. No option was given to me to replace it with something else or to order something else. Why did I pay full price for something which was not complete?
4) my partner ordered a squid dish which was meant to have chilli and a chilli jam. The squid tasted like standard salt and pepper squid with no such described flavours. When he asked where the flavour was he was told the chef drizzled the sauce over the squid. There was very obviously no sauce.
5) they did not have basic drinks such as lemonade and standard coke.
Honestly very disappointed with my experience and the responses of the staff when we asked where components of our dishes were. Would not recommend.
Ate in the restaurant with friends and had the set menu no 1.
This is a good idea and provided enough variety for
our group.
I'm not a fan of heaps of olives but the other options were enjoyable and more than adequate.
We had the set menu dinner which was fantastic. They had no trouble catering for my vegetarian requirement and the food was delicious and plentiful. Great service as well, staff were following all covid safe measures. Highly recommend if you’re after a nice dinner in Port Fairy.
