Tanabe Japanese Restaurant reviews
40Amazing restaurant with super traditional Japanese flavour. Everything was prepared to high standards, especially the sashimi. Definitely try this piece out if you're near by.
It's one of our fave Japanese restaurants. The food and service is consistent and it really is a perfect spot for real Japanese.
Tanabe Japanese Restaurant is the absolute best of the best. Tanabe has a unique Kami that must be experienced. 10/10.
Book early, or be disappointed. As is typical of this type of venue, less attention has been given to the decor, all attention to the food. My friend, who has been to Japan several times says the food is authentic and excellent quality. I believe her.
Best Japanese restaurant I’ve eaten at in Melbourne highly recommended will be back again definitely
Great Japanese food, simple and authentic. Was not expecting a place in Mordy to be anywhere near this good.
I ordered the Tonkatsu and it was great! Would recommend booking though as it can get pretty busy.
I've been coming here for years and I just love the food! Best dumplings in town. The decor could be better, but this place is a hidden gem I could not recommend more highly! Love love love xx
Beef take and sashimi / sushi plate are excellent. Also loved the eel unagi. Service very good and courteous.
Have dined here several times since opening many years ago. Food is consistently good (although pricey and keeps going up) - but their lack of an online booking system is really annoying as you have to wait until just before they open to ring up and find out if table is available. We most definitely go here a *lot* less because of this. They must be one of the last restaurants around to not have this basic convenience available - can't understand why they don't sort this out. Have asked many times - waitresses look at me blankly each time like they've never heard of it before.
Having been to Japan and tasted Nihon Tabemono within Australia, which is a rare experience, Tanabe has transported it's authentic recipe from the motherland herself and given Australian's the experience to dine in it's grace. The menu echoes many dishes made by real Japanese chef's, sake imported only from Japan and the meats cooked so soft it melts in your mouth. It is one of the best Japanese resturants from East/South Melbourne. For such a cute, small resturant, it certaintly makes up for it's unique style. See you guys on Tuesday! Arigatou gozaimashita!
Authentic Japanese food. Mostly sushi with some other Japanese dishes. I would recommend the hotpot omelet. The place is small with not many tables so booking recommended
Great Japanese food and friendly service. The restaurant is small so eating in requires booking, take out is also an option.
Great Japanese food and friendly service. What I didn’t like is the surcharge when you pay with card.
First time experiencing Tanabe in Mordialloc. The food and sake was exceptional and service great. A real pleasure to dine here. Definitely recommend and will come again.
The food speaks for itself. I recommend the Sukiyaki - a beef in broth with vegetables- and the Gyutataki - similar to beef carpaccio in vinigarette.true, authentic Japanese food if hard to come by in Melbourne so this is a perfect restaurant for Japanese-food lovers
Great traditional Japanese restaurant with traditional yummy Japanese food. Great variety and experience
Every single time we dine here we are blown away. It is our family's number one pick. Best and most authentic Japanese we have had in Melbourne
Came here for dinner tonight. Food was good service was good. Restaurant itself is very basic and being a Japanese restaurant I expected it to be cleaner than what it was. That wasn't the thing that really got to me about this place. It was when I came to pay my bill that the lady said she will have to charge me a 1% surcharge for using my eftpos card. She then said if I paid cash I could get a 5% discount. Sound pretty dodgy to me. I am coming to your business and I am happy to support a local business but I'm not happy to get charged any extra because I want to pay with my eftpos card. Sounds rediculous to me. Sorry I won't be back to this local business again. Very bad business practise.
Certainly not the best looking place interior design wise, in fact a little cheap, shabby and poorly lit. That pales into insignificance however, as the food is excellent. My companion had the vegetarian Hotpot, which was outstanding. I had the Tempura which was delicate, fragrant and well presented.
The service could have been better, as my dining partner had finished her starter, before I got mine. Staff could also have been attune to empty glasses and we certainly would have ordered more drinks. However, they were friendly and accommodating when asked. More eye contact with customers is key.
A little money spent on the interior and improved staff training, would make this place a standout as the food simply speaks for itself.
