Steam Restaurant

Why is this place classified as the top 10 restaurants in rye? Honestly i went there with a friend, and food couldn’t be more bland. I’m shocked we aren’t the only ones who were asked to leave a tip.

You ask for a tip, your going to get none. This is not america. If a Uber drivers asks you for a 5 star, u don’t get it - and will probably end up getting a 1 star. Don’t ask for tips!

First of all, walk in was fine. The waitress were asking me to read the menu before I seat lol this is fine maybe theres a lot of people leaving after reading the menu idk. But still I don't mind. Everything was fine till I finished my meal. The second I finished my meal she was asking "do u want your bill now? " I already declined and said later. Three minutes maybe less she come to my table and gave me my bill? Seriously? U guys are closing at 10. And it was only 9. The table beside me juat got served their meal. What was the excuses of doing that? I didn't see the other table was treated the same regarding their bill. Paid $105 for one and got treated like I am going to run and not paying. How judgy is that. Poor poor poor service. I've never got treated like this before. RUDE. Think twice before spending money on average food taste and rude service here.

Steam has been one of my favorite restaurants for years. Unfortunately it seems from what I’ve read the original chef is no longer there. The dishes have changed in flavor, quantity and quality. Absolutely devastated. I will not be returning.

The food was sadly average compared to what I remember of Steam. It’s been years since I’ve been here and I had a great impression and experience pre covid days. The food and portions has changed and not for the better. I hope this improves. The duck pancakes is definitely not authentic. The jam was weird and the duck was just bland. Skin wasn’t crisp and the salad leaves didn’t combine well.

I really do hope they change up their menu over the Summer when it gets busier here in the Peninsula.

My friends and I ordered the Nasi Goreng and Beef Noodles and it was EXTREMELY OILY. The waiter was really sweet and service was great. The food was just too average. Everyone ended up just wasting their food. Inedible.

I can see the owner likes to retort back rude responses, but this is the honest truth. Great service, but unappetising and unhealthy food.

Finding a place to celebrate my sisters birthday was easy. Steam has a cool international feel, caters for dietary needs, faces towards the beach for the evening sunset, and owned and run by a family, providing a personal yet professional service.

Lovely food but terrible value for money. We could only choose set menu. We had very small portions for 4 ppl. It was very disappointing. After wanting to go for ages won’t be going back

We had the $70 banquet as that was all that was on offer. Loved the food, however the front of house was in total disarray not knowing who’s order was whos’s.we would give the restaurant another go, hopefully with a greater choice of menu & organisation.

Unfortunately my partner, my daughters and I felt short changed on every aspect of the dining experience earlier this evening. Never been to a set menu resturant and left still feeling hungry. For a $60 pp banquet, the portion sizes were minimal at best. The spring rolls were probably the highlight taste wise, however the tofu (Claimed to be with salt and chilli) side dish didn't have any taste at all. In addition other customers (Which appeared to be regular toffs) seemed to receive preferential treatment. The very unhappy looking waitress failed to even ask how our meal was and had literally no apparent customer service skills whatsoever. There were a number of other issues which is no point complaining further about. Very uncomfortable experience.

We are regular patrons at Steam and were pleased to see that The menu has changed. We enjoyed three out of the four small plates, the pork belly bao was very average but prawns and dumplings were delicious.
We shared the Nasi Goreng which was way too salty and so much soy sauce the rice was black, I wouldn’t recommend this dish.
Overall the dinner was ok but quite expensive for the standard of food.

I eat out a lot… this place is comfortably the worst experience I’ve had in a long time.
No where does it say that the set menu is per table… when a friend & I wanted to have our own separate set menus we were told no it’s only per table as it to confusing for the kitchen.we were starving and decided to order an extra Nasi Goreng for $25! (picture attached). The food was okay… not bad but not good. 2 dumpings, 1 boa, 2 very small pieces of Karage chicken & a curry with rice for $60. Joke. Worst value meals I’ve ever had. It’s actually $120 for 2 people. It’s very mediocre food for a very steep price.

Food was good but not great. Service was average but main disappointment was we did not receive one dish and when we explained that we had not received and just asked it to be removed from the bill the waitress got very short with us and said you either wait for the fish or I can only take 10 dollars off the full bill. Left a really negative impression. Would not return.

OVERPRICED FOR POOR SERVICE & BAD FOOD!

Spent way too much considering our entrees 1. Didn’t come out together even though it as supposed to be a shared meal? 2. The food took so long to come. 3. Main wasn’t even cooked properly and had way too much sauce (pad Thai) was chewy noodles.

Literally just wanted to get the bill and leave half way thru entrees because the food was taking so long. Very unimpressed. After a $60 meal I would expect to be beyond satisfied. Instead all of us left hungry and feeling short changed. Literally couldn’t even eat the mail meal. We all left with our plates still full & was never asked how the food was by any of the staff.

We've been dining at Steam for over 4yrs now and we are so happy that the new owners have improved the service, kept the delicious menu in play - 10/10 Team - great food as always and we'll be back very soon!

Not one to complain normally, but the most overpriced food and slowest service we have ever had. The food was pretty much we are too busy, so no pride taken in service or quality.
Pork that was like rubber. Dumplings that had no flavour and Coles ones are better.
1 hour to get 4 dumplings to the table.a kingfish dish that was so minute in serving it fell threw my fork.
Anyway steam in rye the worst restraunt on the peninsula.
You want to put big price tags on menu then how bout you deliver on your food.

After booking online and calling to ask to not be down the back of the resturant, we were seating in the very back corner. I asked to be moved to only be seated at a different table and have 2 of the waitress fight with each other about where they have seated us in front of us. Not only did all the staff stand around talking about us making it beyond obvious they push out the door by sending us not 1 but 2 bills while we still had half a glass of wine left. The staff has no idea what they were doing forgot to fill our glasses up from our bottle, forgetting to put beer orders through on 2 occasions and overall I left very uncomfortable by the treatment of the staff.

Wow! Food was out of this world! Special mention to Bianca, outstanding service! First time we have been to Steam, but we will definitely be back. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Amazing food. It was so clean and great flavours. My dietary requirements which were not easy to cater for, were catered for easily and seemed to be no problem to work around. Would go back again in a heart beat

The food here was just beautiful. A diverse range and a taste sensation. So we’ll priced for fine dining. Will definitely be back.

Nice restaurant and tasty food. Cerviche was lovely, bao buns lovely, shrimp was ok but nothing special, dumplings nice but tiny filling and all fell apart as soon as you pick them up, but sadly our main beef rendang was so overly salty it was hard to eat even though we could tell how tasty it was, the salt ruined it and we couldn’t eat it all
