Sommai Thai reviews
61Absolutely delicious food, wonderful caring service, beautiful music, and warm cosy atmosphere. Loved it!
Friendly staff, excellent food. We had the Chicken Thai Green Curry, Satay Beef, Beef Pad Thai. There are vegetarian options as well as choice of duck, beef and chicken.
Will definitely have to come back!
I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. I went with my sister, we had an outstanding meal, we had the Vegetable spring rolls, I had the Beef Hot Plate and my sister had the Tom Yum Seafood Hot Plate. Both dishes were so delicious and bursting with flavour and the service was outstanding and very friendly.
This was a great place a few months ago. I just hot home with some takeaway that was simply inedible.
Delicious Thai with a good variety including lots of vegan options. Owners are super friendly and helpful.
Tried the pineapple fried rice, the steamed chilli barramundi, and the panang curry. They kindly accommodated for allergies and dietary requirements. All the food was delicious and cooked perfectly. The service was kind and friendly, and they had beautiful table settings. Would definitely recommend.
We had a lovely dinner here last night. As s coeliac, I had full confidence that the meal was gluten free. The very sweet, young lady who served us was about to graduate from uni as a nurse. We were celebrating a very special occasion and appreciated the generosity of the family who own and run Sommai Thai.
Visited 14th January 2023 - takeaway. Great Thai food. It’s the first time we have ordered from Sommai, and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and still nice and hot after a 12 minute drive back to our place. The restaurant is small so if you want to dine in, you’d probably want to make a reservation.
My favourite Thai restaurant in the hills. Staff are always super friendly and accommodating (eg they know what I'm allergic to and don't give it to me - I don't even have to ask). They're also super supportive to people in need, donating delicious meals when there's a community crisis and in a regular basis.
I love every dish on the menu and recommend it to anyone. My favourite dish - nam sod (spicy chicken salad).
The service of the shop’s owner was outstanding and friendly.
Ingredient are fresh and good flavors.
I was really disappointed in this restaurant. It gets very high reviews but does not seem to live up to them. I’m sure the people that run this place are very nice but our meal was not great. I don’t like giving bad reviews to local places but it’s frustrating when the reviews do not match the experience. It took nearly an hour for our food to arrive, even though the restaurant was not very busy. The entire time we were there, the two tables near us were not cleared of dirty dishes. The restaurant was very messy in general. We didn’t get exactly what we ordered but decided not to complain as we just wanted to leave after being there for so long. When we let them know while paying (so we weren’t over charged) there was no apology. The food was fine but not worth the huge wait. I wouldn’t go back.
Hands down the best Thai food I have tried in Melbourne. Not heavy, not oily and not westernised with sugar! A hidden gem in the Hills
Sommai Thai is 5 stars from every angle. Brilliant food, Michael is great to talk to at the front, and to Tanya and her team out the back, just keep doing what you are doing. Already planning my next visit with friends!
A group of us travelling from Thailand recently flew into Melbourne. Whilst on a day tour in the Dandenongs we suddenly craved Thai food so we searched for Thai restaurants and Sommai Thai came up number 1 by far. So we hurried on down to get a table and our taste buds were quickly transported back to Thailand! Seriously authentic food. Great job guys, keep it up. Such a shame we are leaving Melbourne already!
Take away last night, $45 for 1 person, 6 small spring rolls, 4 satay skewers, that were 1/4 of the stick, thigh meat with gristle and thick skin, covered in a bland peanut sauce served luke warm and beef salad, that's beef, lettuce, crushed rice grit and dressing. Nothing else lastly roti bread, was so thick on the edges was inedible, raw and doughy. Very disappointing.
Waking in early hours of the night, violently ill and currently suffering diohoreha and a stomach ache.
Wouldn't recommend!
Nice food. Glad to find real Thai nearby:)
Update - still fantastic!
The Massaman in particular.
Spent a few days in the area on a quick holiday and tried this Thai for takeaway one evening. I am not entirely sure how so many people can rate this place to highly. Maybe the standard of food or the understanding of what good food supposed to taste like is a lot lower outside the big cities.
We had 2 different stir fry dishes and rice. Both dishes were bland, watery and boring. The ginger, chicken and mushroom stir fry I had was overloaded with carrots and there was barely any piece of chicken to see anywhere. Just carrots, carrots and more carrots.
Both dishes were not enjoyable to eat at all and this has nothing to do with good Thai food you would find elsewhere in cities. Would not got back and would not recommend either.
Quick service lovely dinning and greatly price tasty food.love to come here with friends and family would recommend
Absolutely amazing and mouth wateringly delicious food! Thank you for accommodating us at a short notice. By far the tastiest Thai I have eaten so far. And the cook (owner) was absolutely amazing and lovely.
Ahhhmazing!
Best Thai in the Belgrave / Tecoma area. Fresh, quality ingredients prepared well - we loved it and will definitely be enjoying Sommai Thai again soon!
