Slate Restaurant Bar

We come here every time we visit Melbourne. Service is quick and efficient, water is bought to the table with out asking and coffee orders taken while you check the menu. I had The Hulk this time - smashed avocado, whipped goats cheese, lime, jalapeno, Pomegranate and cherry tomatoes. Only thing for me was way too many jalapeno's and I like them! I just took a few off my serving. Our Vegan friend just tailermade himself a plate made up of sides and his requests were no problem. My friend had the corn fritters with with poached eggs, grilled haloumi and crushed avocado which he also enjoyed. Staff friendly and efficient and food good. Will be back again on next visit to Melbourne.

Attended as part of a work Christmas Party - we had the upstairs area to ourselves. Beautiful atmosphere tucked away off the main road. Drinks and food good also. Toilets a bit different (boys and girls all in one) and these are shared with the rest of the bar - but that’s no big deal.

I met up with Nik, who one might call a Modern European. Others might only call him Nik, or Nikolas if he was being annoying.

I also saw Michael Rowland from ABC News Breakfast, but that is a story for another day

A good upstairs bar with a well priced happy hour, great location, well laid out and warm even in cold weather and great staff. Perfect for an after work beer on a Thursday

Burger was passable; beers on tap weren’t the best selection. The place feels more like a business lunch venue than anything else.

Roof top bar. Friday crowded. Loud music.
Very busy. Don't forget expect warm hospitality.
Have drinks, dance on beats and enjoy.

Great to grab a beer from 4 to 6 during happy hour. You also get $5 basics. Would not recommend the food!

Wonderful wine selection and great location but can be a little noisy when the crowds come in. Best time to enjoy about 4-5.

A wonderful place, the food is beautiful and the service is spot on, we just kept coming back 3 nights in a row, thank you to all who served us

From the moment I walked in you feel a welcoming atmosphere and vibe. The staff are very attentive and you can see they love the work they do.
The beer is really good and you can tell by the taste they take good care of the quality!
The food was excellent and very tasty!
It’s simple, I really recommend this place it’s faultless! Keep up the great work management and staff. Mark M

The place is excellent, staff is attentive and friendly. They came to us thrice, once to let us know the specials for the day, to take down the orders and then to check if we are enjoying or not.:) the 20 dollar drinks cum lunch combo is really good. Loved the cheeseburger, it was so juicy and yummy. Pretty heavy though. Ambience is quite good. Highly recommended.

I have just had my 30th birthday at Slate bar and was very happy with the venue. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended for any events.

Great food and friendly staff. Attended a morning meeting upstairs in the function room, highly recommend it.

This place is nice without being overly impressive. The food is good and their express lunch is commendable, but my personal opinion is that there are better places to go and eat with a slightly better lunch menu in the CBD.

Food was great. Had the wagyu burger - It was great and not too over packed. Also had seafood pasta which was a special - it was great too, and had the pumpkin ravioli - good too. Staff was friendly and the prices are reasonable.

Myself and my three friends were really looking forward to a lunchtime catch-up, welcoming our friend back from her trip overseas. We decided Slate was a good option as it was close to work, and none of us had ever had an issue there before.
However, we specifically asked the waitress whether the risotto was tomato-based, and we were assured it was not. FORTY minutes later (and we are already late for work at this stage) our meals arrive, and the risotto base is red.
We then troubled the waitress (purple hair in dread-locks) for some parmesan cheese (the natural and obvious accompaniment to risotto), another waitress asks us if we are enjoying our meal to which we reply "we're just waiting on some parmesan". During this time, the risotto is being begrudgingly eaten. A mere 30 seconds later the first waitress comes over and says words to the effect of, "the parmesan is coming from downstairs, there is no point asking another waitress, it's not going to come any faster". We were sitting there absolutely dumbfounded whilst one last bite of the risotto was eaten as the rudeness of this statement dawned on all of us. One of us went up to the counter and explained the situation and returned the meal, whilst she was walking back to the table Dread-locks was mouthing off and slammed the sliding door which separates the outside area from the bar area.
Another waitress (one we hadn't encountered at this point) came over and said she thought the issue was the risotto and wanted to clarify some points, she said "there is absolutely no tomato in the risotto" and our response was "well, the attitude was not warranted" to which the waitress responded ". From both sides" as she was storming off.
We usually like coming to Slate, but the attitude towards us today was abysmal and the only explanation from the staff was that "it's hot and we are busy". Suffice to say we will not be dining at this establishment for a while.

Nice place with roof top seating area. Good food but limited choices for vegetarians. Service was good and quick for a weekday lunch. Great choice of wines on the menu.

Food was great but the service was not good. So be prepared to wait for long, maybe they'll run out of burgers and can't accommodate changes such as adding an egg to a burger. But eventually when the food comes out, it is delicious!

Hot chocolate was very nice. The breakfast was a little cold (but part of a large group). Will have to try then again sometime soon.

Rooftop is super hot in warm days and air conditioning is not strong enough. Food is good and drinks selection is average.
