Very friendly staff, always a busy place but wait times are pretty good so always worth a try even during busy times. Lovely banana bread and good coffee.

Nice place. Nice staff. Always get a nice coffee. Portions very small. Ordered the potatoe rosti I think it's called. Was very disappointed, very small portion. Had to order extra food. Don't order the potatoe rosti if you are hungry. Regardless, I would go back but just wouldn't order the same thing.

Look … nice location but it’s slow. Don’t stop in for a “quick bite” on the way somewhere. I would give them 3 stars but because of a number of things, I can’t. So, if you don’t have children or a big group, you’re relegated to the hot (stinky bin) area and are not able to enjoy the beautiful Oak in the front lawn. Perhaps it was just because it was a busy part of the day (Saturday mid-morning), but the slowness in getting drinks and food was ridiculous (nearly 40 mins for an iced coffee). Was it worth the wait? Not really; food was okay but given the irritation levels, not at all worth the wait.

Really great spot. Fantastic outdoor area, perfect for a casual lunch. The menu is not huge, but the food is nice. We will definitely be back!

A birthday party, children under the shade of a large tree, coffee was good, food fab, staff very lovely. Check it out.

Lentil burger was nice. However service is very slow and disorganised. I watched staff get tables confused, not knowing how has ordered what on what table. It took 35 minutes for a latte but only 15 minutes for my food.

We have just finished celebrating our daughter's 6th birthday at Shillinglaw Cafe, and I couldn't wait to come here and leave them a 5-star review. For those of you who live in Melbourne, you would know the weather is as unpredictable as it gets. While I had hoped to be outside under the old oak tree, the team - Greg, Louise and their wonderful staff - were prepared with contingency plans and moved what felt like heaven and earth to make sure the children and adults were comfortable and accommodated for inside and under the gazebos. The food was simply delicious and so beautifully presented. It was a wonderful birthday celebration, thanks to the very hardworking team at Shillinglaw Cafe. I highly recommend everyone to go and support this business - there is a family behind this entity that truly care, and are working tirelessly to make everyone happy. Thank you so much again for an amazing day. We look forward to coming back for weekend brunches.

Lovely outdoor area for the kids to play and run about. Good food and good service. We had the eggs and toasted sandwiches for the kids.

Pro tip: we were there at closing time and got offered scones and muffins that they would have otherwise been thrown out. +1 point for the freebies. +1 more for ONLY having fresh baked goods

Love this cafe, it's set in one of the oldest cottages in Eltham and has great indoor and outdoor spaces. We've had breakfast here a few times and have enjoyed everything we've tried.

Horrible food, nice staff and food was out quickly (15 mins). I looked at the menu on the website before we went, and it’s totally different in store. Would have liked to have sit outside so our 4 year old could play but there was a function in 1 hour? My partner order some pulled beef burger, it was soggy, meat was dry, he didn’t enjoy it one bit. Daughter (who’s birthday it was) order the waffles WAYYY too sweet and usually she always orders waffles! I had the ancient grain salad with pulled lamb, which was nice, but there was a bone in it, no or little dressing, pumpkin purée which was ok but cold. But I was thrown with the bone, it was like a half walnut size/shape so I thought at first it was that. It wasn’t. My 4 year old had chips and chicken tenders which were apparently ok, but $12 for 10 chips and a few bits of chicken?

We ended up paying and getting the hell out! Won’t be going back again, we were only over there anyway cause my daughter lives over there.

Terrible service. Waited to be acknowledged by staff to no avail, so seated ourselves. Sat again for another 15 minutes without any approach so went and asked for menus. Finally got some. Waited another 20 minutes to place an order, had to get up and approach another staff member again to ask if we could place our order. After experiencing this, and reading many other similar reviews (should have maybe read these prior to visiting), we are at a complete loss as to why nothing is done about it, it seems to be the norm here. When the food finally came, it was also disappointing. We won’t be returning.

The place looks good but I had to leave because I waited more than 20 min to order. Let alone the 10 min waiting to be seated. Came in hungry, went out angry.

Great little cafe that has an outdoor section as well. Serves healthy meals which are a variety of vegan and others.

They make awesome chai lattes which are the real herbs and not just powder.

Interesting menu selection. Highly recommended.

Great food and staff. A suggestion, please add sugar free soft drinks and iced tea to your menu. All cold drinks on offer are full sugar.

Just rating the dirty chai. Was good. The kitchen closes at 2pm.we missed it by 10mins. Good place to bring children provided the weather is pleasant.

Shillinglaw is a lovely old place full of history with good food.but they seem to care very little about the sitting out area at the front of the premises.it is overgrown with weeds.they store their empty bakery baskets there and there always seems to be a collection of old fridges etc dumped out the front.it creates a poor impression and they're actually losing 4 covers as nobody would wish to sit out there. The back seating area is lovely but full of children and if you're a grown up without children you dont always want to be surrounded by noisy tiny people. The patio at the front is ideal for adults.get it cleaned up!

Wow. I'm not sure how it can be worse than this experience? !? ! It started off well with friendly smiles from the waitress staff but that is the only good thing I can say.

First we were left sitting for a good 15 mins before I can flag a staff member to get a menu.it then took another 20 minutes before I had enough of waiting and walked over to the front counter to order.just prior to that, one of the waitress served a table in front of us (a reserved table that came 20 mins after us). Even the lady sitting there mentioned to the waitress that my table has been waiting (I've been waving my hand trying to get her attention), but I heard her dismissing the lady saying she will get to us soon enough.after taking the order, she just walked away! We also saw a few other tables given up after waiting for 20mins and got their own water, cups and orders at the front desk.

So after an hour, finally got the breakfast ordered. The corn fritters was soggy.and one of my poach egg was over cooked (yolk was solid), while the other was way under (whites was really runny). Will never go back again.

Gorgeous food! Beautiful atmosphere. We sat outside and it was lovely. Great for kids and dogs. In the Entertainment Book too.
