Malthouse Theatre reviews
54 Saw the hour of the wolf, a very very cool experience! Make sure you spend time looking around at all the details
A great date night idea
What a lovely theatre! Went to see Hour of the Wolf a couple of weeks ago and it was a fantastic experience! The production design was impressive and unique.
When you purchase tickets on their website it adds a $7 donation by default. Very sneaky and deceptive trying to force a donation, and hoping people don’t notice and just click through to the payment screen. This is the equivalent of pickpocketing $7 irl from each attendee as they enter the venue, and hope they don’t notice.
It's a beautiful place and a beautiful group of people who run it.
Great theater experience. Very accommodating!
The venue is cashless but use one square and this merchant system doesn't accept savings accounts only Credit or debit therefore I cannot buy a drink or food at this venue. Cash is still a legal tender and must be accepted.
Malthouse is a beautiful theatre. Saw Anna K on 30 Aug 22. Had Row AA seats but like 4 others in the front row, we found it too close to the stage and as the theatre wasn't full, we were able to move back rows before the play commenced. We moved to row BB which was fine. The other people from Row AA moved back further, still to getting good seats.
Very arty theatre with live plays mostly on social norms, different cultures, portraying relevance. I've attended many plays here and enjoyed each time!
Great intimate theatre to see Suzi Millers new play. The rustic look is fabulous, comfy crunches, seats outside, great bar service and light meals. Hot chips were popular with many.
Visited on a Friday evening, nice selection of drinks, serving staff was welcoming, plenty of on street parking available nearby.
Loved this venue. Seats were spacious and comfortable. Great food and drink offering and reasonably priced. Helpful staff and really accessible with great free parking options near by.
1. ENVIRONMENT: Very cosy clean environment 10/10
2. COFFEE: is only just passable 6/10. Brand of coffee beans used is 2/10. Coffee beans are bitter and tasteless. Malthouse please change your coffee beans to a nicer coffee bean. The Barrister's are doing the best they can with the inferior coffee beans. Suggestion: Milk coffee's need to be hotter and change your coffee beans to a better quality coffee.
3. FOOD: average but expensive 6/10. No cooked food. Just pre-made sandwiches etc with no pricing. If you don't eat high refined carbs (white bread etc) suggest you don't eat here. Eat before you come.
4. PRICING: 0/10 - No prices in food cabinet so the poor staff have to waste their valuable time telling you the price of each item which is also a waste of the customers time. Suggestion: Malthouse please provide visible pricing for better use of everyone's time! Very frustrating as a customer as I had to ask the prices of 6 items and due to the high prices I didn't end up buying anything. Is that why there is no pricing in cabinet because you know your prices are high (not competitive) so you are trying to intimate the customer into buying.
5. STAFF: 10/10 very friendly and professional.
So women get their own toilet, but the men's has been converted to "multi gender toilet with open urinals". What the hell people? Either convert all toilets to multi gender or leave the toilets divided into men's and women's.
Go for the theatre not for the food. We decided to eat inside rather from the outdoor vendors which was a mistake. Salmon poke bowl, hmm 3/4 brown rice and the smallest of salmon and salad so I suppose poke is the right word as you had to poke around. Mexican nachos, well all can say is bring your own topping, 2 blobs of salsa and cream on top of corn chips, maybe it should have been called Mexican Poke Nachos. If you want to charge premium $ for food I absolutely expect something better than what we received.
Saw the razor sharp, stunning Reuben Kaye here. Delighted to see this incredible performer at Malthouse, one of our favourite Melbourne theatres. Malthouse delivers great theatre in a lovely inviting old brick venue with spacious outdoor area, a good bar and great food. Have enjoyed many relaxed nights of entertainment here. A really good place to have a night out.
Stopped in for a couple of beers after an early knock off but this isn't that kind of place. A great outdoor setting but the bar closes mid afternoon and they only have Cooper's sparkling and pale ale, that's it.
Nice modern building with different spaces and interesting architecture. Comfortable seating, easy and efficient entry and exit. Overall a very good venue for seeing a show or play.
This theater is a bit of a hidden gem. Great set up with seating, comfortable, perfect view of stag.
Has a bar and dinner in the foyer although make sure you state which red shiraz you want otherwise you will get slogged with the higher price one which i wasnt aware of until charged.
If you're a struggling VCA student who wants a cheap jug and hug this is the place to go xoxo
Fab setting, a charming shady courtyard, character filled venue for local drinks and catch ups
Gorgeous old building right in the heart of Southbank. Truly amazing to see that it now houses some Melbourne greatest theatrical performances and an atmospheric bar. Worth a visit.
