52Horrible service. Wanting to make a booking is like the hardest thing to do on earth. Harder than graduating from uni, seriously.
A very well-known Chinese family restaurant in the Melbourne area.
This place serves the best-tasting quail in town.
The menu has some history and some evidence of famous celebrities, top food critics and also Michelin hat chefs.
The food here is generally very tasty and delicious, you will like it for sure.
Since it is quite famous, hence you will need to make a reservation in advance to guarantee your seating.
Parking is available on the street for a maximum of 2 hours before 6 PM.
The restaurant service is a bit lacking since they are very busy serving customers both dine-in and takeaway.
When paying with an electronic method, there will be some additional surcharge.
Well done Mabrown team family.
This resto has won twice in a row for Asian Food Festival in 2007 and 2008. And once you eat their specialties, you will know why. The spicy quails is a must. Try their Oyster Sauce Kai Lan too, its a well eat along with the quails.
You have to be patient to wait for the food coming though, but its worthed.
Average Cantonese food from a dozen years ago. Eggplant stew generally tastes messy. In the fried beef river, the salt in it was not stir-fried, the color was not good, and the green onions were raw. Xingzhou Fried Rice Noodles are just fried rice noodles casually. The rice noodles have not been mixed with curry, the taste is bland, and the salt has not been stir-fried. The only thing that was passable was the salt and pepper quail. I didn’t order any other dishes, so I can’t comment. Just go to a restaurant like this once and try the quail.
The food are just ok. Very disgusting service! Never go again! They have THE WORST SERVICE AWARD for 20years and they are actually proud of it!
We were regular customers for many many years, and even up til a year ago, the food was pretty decent.
We haven't been back for a while, and unfortunately tonight's dinner was hugely disappointing. Everything tasted either bland, too sweet or had an odd flavor. The noodles were overcooked and the prawns not fresh. Your signature quail was way off its mark.
The teo-chew style steamed fish simply tasted sweet, and nothing like what it's supposed to taste.
Lastly, for this quality, the food is over-priced. We had a 5 star French meal in Toorak last night that gave us much better value!
Need to book in advance if u wish to eat the quail. They have choice of spicy or non spicy, and of course i chose spicy. And it doesn’t taste spicy at all for me. It’s very greasy and taste ok for me
The quails are amazing and the food was awesome but the service and management needs a major overhaul and improvement.
The service is so bad and rude. Booked by phone but when come they said no menu confirmation. Dont go to mabrown
The food quality is far below average; anyone can cook a bit better than the chef. Everything served is salty with too much MSG. I wouldn’t go there again.
This restaurant is only a 2-minute walk from our home. I thought I could eat here often, but it was very disappointing when I went there for the first time. Our family reserved a table, but we stood at the door for 5 or 6 minutes before an old lady came out. Pointed us to a table and gave us nothing, not even a menu, we had to go and get the menu ourselves. After 15 minutes no one came to take our order. After we waved hands countless times, the old lady finally nodded to us and was about to come over to order for us, but suddenly she was stopped by the table next to us, and then turned around and ordered for the table next to us. The point is that the guests at that table came later than us. In the end we didn't eat anything, and left disappointed with our children. I don't care how delicious the food in this restaurant is, but with such poor service, even if it's free, I won't go there again!
It was a choice of restaurant we had to have due to transport and timing. We wanted to walk back out upon entering a very noisy restaurant! It turned out the noise was coming from just a table of nine! The staff were simply too busy to serve! It turned out they are short of waiter/waitress. We ordered their signature dish quail, steamed barramundi, seafood tofu, and spicy egg plant. Unlike the chaotic atmosphere, the food were surprisingly nice! We even met the owner Peter Han. He shared the story of the origin of the name Marbrown with us! It was genuine and gave us a hearty laugh! We like what he stands for! He even told us to book our favourite dishes ahead of time as some traditional dishes need preparation. We will definitely back!
Would not allow for a single person table they were *too busy*
Would not even allow for takeaway.
Very dissapointed
Great Chinese food especially the quails which is the signature dish. I like the regular. The spicy one are too hot for me.
The rest of dishes are yummy too.
Price is very reasonable
A bit under staff but when you got good food who cares
Friend ordered & picked up dishes from Ma brown on 19.4.2022
still waited 30mins.the 2 popular dishes roast quail & prawn noodles
the quail was good standard flavourful marinade
prawn noodles was ok too.prawns quite big and fresh & bouncy.noodles & sauce ok not among the best
LIke everyone else, we came for the quails. Thankfully our friends pre-ordered so there was mininal wait time. The spicy quails were really delicious - tendy, juicy and flavourful. We also ordered sambal kangkong which was a little different to what we're used to. Still tasty, a little sweeter than we were expecting.
Always good food at Ma Brown. Love the quails and other dishes. Photos taken after we got stuck into the meal. Will be back
We heard a hype about the Quails. They are good but not fantastic. You can add many different types of sauces on them. I recommend plain but the special Mabrown sauce seems to be the favourite so we tried it.
We also had ma po tau fu and chicken ribs. The chicken ribs were a lot crispier and more to my liking compared to the quail. It could be just me?
Best to check prices online and confirm prices when taking away as the owner or boss lady said the website price is outdated.
We take away so the quail could be less crispy when we had it so I would recommend dining in.
It took 80 minutes for all the food to come out. Food was average too. Quail isn’t as good as it used to be.
Worst restaurant I’ve ever been to. Waited 45 minutes to be told what we order was not available. Tables coming in 20 minutes after we place our order gets their food first. Don’t bother going here. Try the Korean bbq next door. Friendliest boss ever. Excellent service.
