At a time where other restaurants (even at the same price point) are using QR code menu’s and no waitstaff, Le Gaulois’ service last night was an incredible experience. Highly professional waitstaff, outstanding service and ambience, and the food was exceptional - refined and simple. We did three courses and drinks, which only came out to around $80pp, an exceptionally reasonable price for the experience we had. I will be highly recommending this restaurant to anyone near the Mount Waverly area looking for French cuisine.

I have been to dine at this restaurant over the past few months and I can say I have never been disappointed. The food is impeccable, the service excellent and I love this restaurant. Thank you so much for an amazing dining experience

Well worth visit! We'll be back! Only down side is that they close 9.00pm which puts a bit of pressure on you to eat fast and enjoy less. Otherwise recommended.

Efficient service and a pleasant team. The meals were tasty and served fairly quickly. A typically darkened setting and an older clientele on the night we attended. Not a Frenchy in sight, but couldn't fault anything. A pleasant evening (and BYO).

A Less Than Impressive Visit to Le Gaulois French Restaurant

Le Gaulois is one of the few French restaurants in the southeastern area. However, despite its unique offering, it leaves much to be desired.

The decor is rather uninspiring and dated. It's hard to pin down the exact style they were going for, but suffice to say, the interior design did not contribute to a positive dining experience.

While the cuisine is undoubtedly French, the execution fell far short of expectations. The bread was bland and unexciting, and the duck dish failed to impress. We opted for the snails, a must-have for any French dining experience, but were taken aback by the steep pricing.

Regrettably, based on this experience, a second visit to Le Gaulois seems unlikely. It's disheartening to say, but in a place with limited French culinary options, this one failed to hit the mark in terms of both ambience and gastronomic delight.

For a true French restaurant some very fine details are missing and those little details make the all of a difference between getting feed and enjoying food

Great dining experience. Everything we ordered was delicious!

Ordered the escargot and shared with a friend and had great flavour-it was buttery and a strong garlic flavour which I love. Really enjoyed it despite being a bit scared since it was my first time having escargot.

Had the beef eye fillet with mushroom sauce and it was amazing. The sauce was rich in flavour and the beef was cooked perfectly to my liking.

My friend had the duck confit which was also great. The sauce was surprisingly sweet and the duck meat was perfectly pink inside.

They also served with a side of veggies. My favourite was the potatoes as it was a great carrier of my remaining mushroom sauce. They were so creamy and melted in your mouth each bite.

Wasn't too sure what it would be like since the restaurant interior is quite old and outdated but pleasantly surprised my the food.

Sorry, but the chef and owner need to do a French cooking course to understand what French food is all about.
What an absolute let down, will not return.

A special birthday night out. The decor is a little dated now, and so was the clientele on the night we went, but that's what made it quiet enough to converse and enjoy the French chansons playing in the background. The service was excellent without fussiness. And the food itself? A smallish menu done impeccably. Overall, a local gem, easily overlooked, but that really would be a shame.

The food was very good, i loved the lamb. It was so tender and waste good with the roasted potatoes. I also had the duck, the orange sauce was a bit unique for me but it tasted nice. The waiters seemed nice, and the place being in a low-light environment fitted in well. I did think it was a bit expensive for the price of the food, but overall not bad. 9/10 for me.

Majority of our food was nice. The service was courteous and the ambience is special and cozy in the area.
However the receipt we received was not eligible for VIC dining program claim as its not printed. I have contacted resturant and told was there is no printed receipt.
Be aware if you want to dine for the rebate.

Great delicious dinner! Full marks to the Chef!
Had Escargots de Bourgogne with garlic butter sauce and chopped mushrooms, canard aux noix à l'orange and Cointreau sauce, and crêpe Suzette flambée with vanilla ice cream. Friendly staff and timely service.
Best to book well in advance!
PS. Forgot to turn off auto flash with crêpe Suzette flambée

We are going here on Friday, and I hope it's everything I expect. My mother in law is celebrating her birthday with us here. I have been going here since I was a teenager.

The restaurant is very unassuming, modest and rather old school charm.

Its nice to see this, as often places are so trendy or cool, Le Galouis isn't. The meals are very well prepared by the chef whom will come to greet you.

So with these touches, Le Galouis is a must try.

Merci Beaucoup!

Celebrated a birthday at Le Gaulois recently. You wouldn’t have known there was a French restaurant on the street if you weren’t looking for it! The decor felt like a pop up store with a few tables and chairs slapped awkwardly onto a room that is overdue for some updating or renovation. However, the French music and decor did help build abit of a rustic, homely vibe.

We had the escargots and garlic bread to start. The escargots didn’t have as much taste or flavor as I expected, but the garlic butter sauce was good. It was nice to have some bread come with it to go with the leftover sauce, however, wouldn’t recommend it. The garlic bread was recommended in a few other reviews and I do agree that it was good, but when they meant 2 pieces it was really 2 small slices.

For the mains, we had the orange duck and a beef fillet that was listed under the chef specials. The duck turned out great, with an excellent orange sauce. However, the beef fillet was abit mediocre and we regretted not ordering something more traditionally French instead.

For dessert we had the crepe Suzette. As simple as it looks, it tasted amazing and came with a quality scoop of ice cream. We enjoyed the spectacle of having it arrive in a blue flame as well.

Service was excellent and attentive, with a single waiter very capably attended to all 3 tables and constantly checking in to see if everything was alright.

Main negative for me would be the portion sizing/value. Was abit disappointing to receive my coke in tap form as well, which tasted like sparkling water as there possibly wasn’t adequate syrup added. Would have expected a bottle.

Overall, it’s abit mixed for me as I do like the joint but at the price point it is very hard to beat the other options out there with better ambience or portion sizing.

We enjoyed a delightful traditional French dinner in warm surroundings and with excellent service from a young man who handled a full house very professionally.
I lunched at La Gaulois 44 years ago and obviously, whilst the management has changed, probably several times, my return visit was a treat.
Thankyou. Ken Hurle
Sorry, make that 34 years ago

Lovely little restaurant, the food is excellent and the staff are friendly, chatty and helpful. It's quite small (it seats around 40 people) but I liked this as it meant the volume was low and you could hear one another talk. The shop frontage is a bit lacklustre (it doesn't really stand out amougst the other shops on the strip) and the decor is reflective of the restaurant's age, but don't be put off by this. I was part of a group of five and everyone got a mix of dishes (entree, main and dessert), and we all thoroughly enjoyed them. Thanks for a wonderful dinner, I'll definitely be back again!
