Kanpai is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. Their food is very tasty, the service is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. Kanpai did a great job providing takeaway for customers during the lockdowns.

Have not been for a few years, was my favorite.last night grungy looking menu selection crossed out in black texta.no tempura at a japanese restaurant? Mixed teppanyaki used to be crisp meat veg and seafood, with rich garlic cream sauce.now very bland, my wife's food also very average.will not go again or recommend.must have new owner or very ordinary cook

I had the worst donburi ever in my life. The whole bowl of the donburi was watery and tasteless. The rice was watery like porridge. The chef also did not even bother to put salt in the cooking. They also use frozen vegetable that become mushy when cooked. So not worth the price.

I’d give minus -5 if I could! Not real Japanese. Got my order wrong, mains didn't come at the same time, and serving size doesn't seem to measure up to price (for the sushi and sashimi anyway).

Nice Japanese restaurant on Chapel Street with delicious food worth the price paid for.much cheaper when you go in a group than alone

Like others have mentioned before, this is a not a Japanese restaurant. It's run like a budget Chinese restaurant despite its name and menu. Overpriced food, for minimal quantity. This is capitalism at its best. We had a 'Empress sashimi plate' - $35 - and served with the thinest smallest slices of salmon, which weren't the freshest, sparsely decorated on bundles of shaved radish. There was more radish on the plate than fish. We also had the fried pork and chicken cutlets. Not bad, but how badly can one screw up deep fried food? It literally takes no brains to throw pre-made frozen food into the deep fryer. Minimalist quantity as well. To those who said it's quality over quantity, you've never had proper Japanese cuisine before. One star is even too much for a restaurant like this.

Really lovely food, which was brought out fast and tasted amazing.

Bit squashed in the restaurant. Servings are smallish but I think you get quality over quantity here.

Chinese "take away food", pretending as Fine Dining Japanese food. It is a totally a rip-off (the price). Plus a Chinese lady, who is the boss and So So So rude!

Great Japanese restaurant, one of my favourites! The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The food is great and I especially love the beef teriyaki. Would definitely recommend going there and checking it out.

Been going here for nearly 2 decades. An institution. Always fresh and tasty. It’s our go too and the owners/staff always great. Can not recommend enough the prawn Tepanyaki - out of this world

Very good Japanese - have been coming here for many years. Highly recommend the sushi hand rolls, fresh shashimi, age dashi tofu, mussels with sauce, fried chicken, raw beef - so much fun for sharing. The decor isn't super trendy but still a nice atmosphere with friendly staff.

Average bento box, was a strange mixture of fried chicken, rubbery fish, and curried meat for $18, not like a normal bento.manager didn't seemed interested in my feedback.

Not Japanese at all. Bean shoots in a yasai ramen, not too mention a raw piece of pumpkin to spoil further. No vibe and very slow. Sushi was not authentic whatsoever.

Staff were great. Owner was rude and overcharged us, and put tax on a service fee that wasn't posted to say there was one. Maybe she should be reported to the ACCC and Tax Dept. Never go there. Oh the food was reasonable.

Pretty nice and tasty Japanese food, but the rice to food portions don't seem too balanced. There's either too much rice or too little

They opened 40 years ago and they upheld the same taste, standard even the same place. Always more expensive than othera but then again it was always worth the money.

First experience in the restaurant and staff behavior was so rude. We kindly asked for high chair but got very impolite responses from waitress.
