Kanpai Japanese Restaurant

Poor overpriced food. Many things on the menu unavailable. Some of the poorest Japanese food I’ve ever eaten.

Been coming here for over 20 years, food is always fresh and tastes amazing. Annie and James are very friendly and provide super fast service, definitely my favourite restaurant in Melbourne absolutely love it!

I used to be a regular at Kanpai, but I've noticed some changes recently. The portion sizes seem to have gotten smaller, and they're not as generous with the meat as they used to be. It's a bit disappointing, as I loved coming here for the food. Hopefully, they can get back to their old generous portions. Otherwise really good Japanese food!

A nice cosy little place with simple, delicious food. Miso soup was good which is my gauge of fundamentals. I had the chicken ramen which was great. Reasonable prices

Kanpai is fantastic, Annie the owner is wonderful, hospitable and friendly. The food is mouth wateringly good. Recommend the grilled chicken in creamy garlic sauce, to die for! All dishes are very good, I used to live 2 min walk away and dined there every week. Tip: Book a table early Kanpai gets very, very busy after 7pm almost impossible to get a table. Excellent food and service.

Complete waste of money and time.got charged $20 for 4 individual tempuras and half an eggplant.worst japanese i’ve ever had.

Thought it was a Japanese restaurant, but it turned out to be a Chinese restaurant serving Japanese food. The price range shouldn't have raised expectations, considering the rising cost of living. However, the food quality and taste didn't match up to the average Japanese fast food restaurant. The most important thing is that I got diarrhea after eating there. If it wasn't for the diarrhea, I would have given it three stars, but because of that, I can only give it one star.

I thought it was a Japanese restaurant, but it’s actually a Chinese restaurant with Japanese ingredients. I shouldn’t have expected this price. After all, the price has risen, but the quality and taste of the food is not as good as that of ordinary Japanese fast food restaurants. Very bad experience，waitress without any asking，take away my plate straight away. Although I understand she wanna help me to throw away the chicken bones，it could be so rude if someone do it without any ask. I’m still enjoying my food and chat, it’s so sad someone just suddenly ruined the vibes, so sad.

There is a reason which they are in business for long time

I've been to Japan 3 times and always complained how western ideas of Japanese food is really unsatisfactory.
This was amazing and my friend and I will definitely be back for a taste of Japan

Fresh, fast, affordable and delicious. The service makes you as warm and happy as the sake. Love it here. Agree will all other reviews on the beef and chicken garlic sauce. Strong recommend.

Beautiful family run restaurant with traditional and also some quirky dishes.
Nice that they always remember us and what we regularly order.

Delicious food, fast & friendly service. Will be back for sure. (Best ask for wine from a fresh bottle though.) Teppanyaki Cream sauce meat dish is divine, highly recommended!

Honestly, I was trying to walk in to a different Japanese restaurant, they were full.
I'm glad because it was really nice here.
Drinks mildly, very mildly more expensive.
But I'm cheep.

I told you: We have three. And waiting for you. Thant means: can we sit down and have dinner? There’s one ordering in front of us and my son wants to go to the toilet. He ran through and just took a look (didn’t use). You're angry and tell me I should apply with you first. This makes me upset. All the guest in your shop should apply to use the toilet?

Friendly staff but the foods are horrible. Sushi are falling apart and the don is Chinese style

Was in Melbourne from the Gold Coast for four nights and ended up eating here on three of those nights. Honestly, cannot recommend it enough! Good food, fresh fish and the most lovely staff! Will definitely come back next time I’m here.

The food here is SO good and the staff are so friendly. One of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. A must-go in Melbourne!
